It would be such a coup if it turned out that Lawson was the one to break completely free.

And I don't want Jinger to do any romance right now (I want that girl to get some real help, and a boyfriend/special friend/court-sport isn't real help), but I have this image of Lawson singing A Whole New World to her, but instead of taking her on a magical flight to China and Egypt and Greece, he shows her Disney movies and secular music that stirs up desires.

^ this is actually why I'm not as against the whole Lawson/Jinger thing as many are. He is barely fundie anymore. As her 'headship', he'd surely let Jinger wear cute dresses like Alyssa's/pants if she wanted and introduce her to 'un-gotHARD approved' movies/tv/music and do photography as a business if she wanted. 

She could do worse than someone who is clearly quite fundie lite and making his own money.

Yet another drawback to the whole courtship model. You tell a bunch of 18-23 year old horny dudes to pursue "who God is calling them to" and it basically becomes a beauty pageant.

Most of us are guilty of this at one point in our lives, but we date some and realize maybe some other things are also important in a long term relationship, especially marriage. I do feel really bad for the girls who aren't classically good looking.

Let's not jump the gun and declare that Lawson is 'barely even fundie now' before we know whether he wants his wife to eschew birth control and have as many blessings as possible, stay in the home and never work, his daughters to wear skirts only, beating, blanket training, etc. If he still believes in all that and more, he's still a fundie whether he watches TV or not.

It is true that "barely a fundie" is a bit of a stretch but it is clear that Lawson is not following his parents' example with regards to a number of things and that he is not exactly hiding it so it is likely that he is not the perfect wonder fundie-kid at least. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he breaks even more rules than he admits.

I think it's very possible that this is all fitting into their new and improved image. It's not like Lawson is watching Pulp Fiction and demonstrating his new rap skills. By many standards, Frozen and Elvis are fairly tame.  Or even has a public girlfriend, for that matter.

Lawson may be drifting a bit from strict ATI teachings, but he still seems like a fundy to me--just not as hardcore a Gothardite fundy anymore.

Has this been mentioned before? I just saw on Instagram how some of the Bates siblings went to "Zach and Whitney's church" for their Christmas program. We probably will never know if this is the church they married in, the church where Whitney's adoptive dad preaches, or somewhere else, but hey, they chose different from the Bates family and are still loved and respected. Then again, come to think of it, none of the married ones go to their church anymore, at least not regular. Next, will Lawson do that? Or (gasp!) move out on his own? There is hope, FJers. There is hope.

Probably, but at least on the surface, he doesn't seem any different than the "mainstream" conservative christians I know. Most of them throw up bible quote and "pro life" crap on social media too. 

Lawson also breaks the Jender roles by taking an interest in his siblings/niece/nephew. I have hope for him.

I don't remember any of them going to ALERT. There are some pretty fucking bad stories that come out of that program so perhaps Gil and Kelly decided to protect their sons more than they did their daughters. 

The Bates have always let sons bend rules more than daughters, so I'm not leaping on the "going not-fundie" wagon yet because nothing he is doing is really a slap in the face to the current ideology of ATI. People keep forgetting that ATI is changing too, it isn't the same place it was ten years ago. Call me back when Lawson is support equality for women or says that he thinks public school is a perfectly acceptable.option for teaching children.

While I know what Alert is and what they say they are doing/promoting, are there any sites where I can read first person stories about what happens there?

Cherry Bottom Baptist  looks like all of the nondescript brick/white siding Baptist churches in my home county in NC--just a couple counties east of the Bates.

What I find the most interesting part of Zach and Erin not going to the same church as their parents--is that Gil is running his own Holiday Inn-based church. You would think there would be strong pressure to go listen to your daddy preach.

I'm listening to a sermon from July, they don't have any newer ones.  I just started and the music is typical Gaither type music.  I'll let ya'll know how the sermon is.

It's very interesting that Zack and Whitney and Chad and Erin have chosen to not attend their dad's church. I wonder if the married kids are still participating in the Kelly's Friday night Bible time. I remember Whitney and Zack didn't look too thrilled about it when Kelly suggested it.
