My character is perfectly fine, thank you so much for being so very concerned about it.
I am just saying that by giving children certain names, you are opening them up to questions. I have been told that my name sounds stripper like and also like a pornstar. It also leads people to asking me "Your name is so very interesting, where did you get it?" The response "My parents, where did you get yours?"
I never stated that I would dismiss someone because of their name, I said that I would find it hard to take someone seriously. In other words, they would have to work harder to prove that they are more than it.

But you didn't say it would be difficult and they'd have to work harder, you said you wouldn't be able to take them seriously. It just sounded really bad to me.

Then perhaps you should ask for clarification before you go straight to judgment.
Names do have sway. Take the Duchess of Cambridge, she goes by Catherine now and not Kate for just that reason.

I am well aware that people judge others based on their names. Class, race and religion all play into this. So I think rather than judging others based on their names (which I know usually happens subconsciously), shouldn't we all make an effort to look past this? Shouldn't we, who are aware of this phenomenon, be the ones to judge people based on what they say and do, rather than on how we presume their parents to be? Personally, I prefer to learn a little something about a person before I decide that I can't take them seriously because their name is Brooklyn, or Maliq, or Latisha. But that's just me.

All this talk of names is making me wonder what our fundie families would make of mine- I'm named after a 13th century author who wrote a famous poem about Hell or a nymph depending on who you ask in my family. There is a story about my dad's N being mistaken for an A.

They would probably either run or say "we'll pray for you!"

They would definitely run away from DD-she's named after a Celtic Goddess.

Thanks to the interwebz, names are MUCH MORE varied every year. 100 years ago a large percentage of children were named the 10 most popular names for that year. Today? The top ten most popular names each year are actually a pretty small percentage of all babies named for that year.

So people will get used to seeing uncommon names or names that sound cutesy or made up. People will get used to weird spelling. People will get used to names popular in other countries.

Everyone will have a negative opinion about any name you choose. I've gotten some crap for my naming choices and they are very ordinary names. Oh well. As long as the kid isn't named Adolf Hitler Bates, he will probably be ok.

Or Spurgeon.

By the time these kids are grown, names like Kaci and Lexi will be common, and nobody is going to care.

Has anyone noticed that Whitney and Erin both rhyme their kids' names with their own? Whit-NEY Brad-LEY Ka-CI / Er-IN Car-SON BrookLYN. I wonder if that's their "theme"

It seems like this cleaning business is a full time thing as the hours listed on the website under the contact information suggest that they're contactable 8-5 on weekdays and also 9-5 on Saturdays. Definitely a fundie business though- they list Sunday as "closed"."

To me, this doesn't mean that that they are cleaning during weekday business hours--it can just mean that John answers his cellphone between 8-5. Nothing about this strikes me as "proof" that John has left his father's business, or that his father's business doesn't have enough work for him.

Same here.   I see this as merely doing more advertising for the cleaning business which he and Alyssa have been doing for some time.   He might be wanting to drum up more work now that Alyssa is expecting no. 2.    She has posted on her instagram that just because John's dad is a congressman doesn't mean they are rolling in money which some folks seem to assume.  Don't think they are struggling but they will soon have another mouth to feed.

Well played, Alyssa. Fake humility.

I am sure that it was part of it.  You know because fundies in general are good at the "fake humility" thing and express it most likely automatically.  However, while I don't think that Alyssa and John are hurting moneywise, I honestly think it was a true statement.

On the flip side, I don't think Fundys in business are especially generous when paying their employees (massive understatement). I don't think that being a member of the owner's family would automatically mean a living wage. I can see Fundy fathers paying their children the absolute minimum they can, to ensure that they maintain control over their grown offspring. I see the cleaning business as John trying to care for his growing family, after receiving no increase in wage from the family business. If this is the case, I have to respect his drive for work.

From what I've seen, many adult offspring pay what I call a family tax. This means, the business will someday belong to the offspring but, until then, they will be compensated less than they would if they did similar work somewhere else. I understand needing to plow money back into the business, but there needs to be more balance. For some, this is a means to grow the business in order to sustain more family members in the future. For others, the low wages are a means of control.

IME fundie businesses / fundie managers are not generous.    I quit what started out as a decent job because I got a new manager who was fundie and he was not going to give raises to that childless woman, meaning me, who was not in her proper place at home.  Seriously.   He expected that I should eventually quit because of having a baby anyway.  He was a bit shocked when I quit (without baby btw) to go on to my stint at the Big Company instead.

Agreed that many fundie fathers see their adult children working for them as free or nearly free work.  Think Sarah Maxwell as one example.  So I would not be surprised if John is not getting paid well.    However, he strikes me as being very hardworking and responsible in any case, and I respect his efforts in branching out with this cleaning business.

I'm glad they didn't name their children Dream, Apple, Saint, North, or La-a ( ladasha). In comparison Kaci, Lexi, Allie, heck even Spurgeon is ok by me (although I really don't like Spurgeon). At least, they're real names and not just words.

I seem to recall that they mostly clean commercial businesses. If that is the case, It is highly unlikely that they are cleaning during weekday business hours, when the businesses are operating. More likely, they are cleaning after hours when businesses are close. John could be working HVACs during the day, and cleaning with Alyssa at night.

Working 2 jobs- how refreshing. If only others could get a clue.

The Duchess of Cambridge never really went by Kate, it was always Catherine to her friends and family - Kate was a name the press made up for their own reasons.

It looks like she grifted a bunch of that stuff.

Plus, she is a superficial twit.

Well, why not actually the real names  - like Allison or Alexa/Alexandra  - the way a normal adult would? Oh, yeah, the reason the names sound like something a 7 year old would give her dolls .... well, do I need to spell it out?

Oh, I completely agree with you. And it's funny because I know a couple Alexandras who go by Allie, too. I was originally referring to someone who had pointed out that Allie and Alexa were very close, but I don't see where that would be limiting since Allie and Alyssa are so close. Allison and Alexandra would be better in my opinion. .... then what's the next one, Alice?

She looks older than she is IMO. Isn't she only like 21? Carlin looks different with that hair and Josie is one of the most naturally pretty Bates girls IMO.

I agree with those who think that John & siblings are probably not paid that well. Depending if he has any certification he might find work that's better paid elsewhere but I'm sure he simply can't leave dad. And here we are again with everything that's wrong with those people.

Josie and Carlin are hanging out with Alyssa, who is looking amazing.

I still wish Josie and Carlin were visiting on an old fashioned type Little Sibs weekend at college, instead if visiting their 21 year old sister who is expecting her second child.

(After lots of problems, I know more colleges went to elementary school aged little Sibs and activities, instead of high school aged Sibs.)

Isn't Alyssa older? Didn't Tori just turn 21? I can't keep these people straight.

You're right; Alyssa is 22, Tori is 21.

I wonder if Tori feels like she should be in the next season like Alyssa is. Interesting differences. One at 21, in school, with a boyfriend (fairly normal) and one at 22, in her own home, with a husband, daughter, and one on the way. It must be that as as long as some of the kids are following the same path, the rest can go their own way?
