TLC Documentary on Sexual Abuse

It bothers me that there is so much focus on Jill and Jessa in all of this (by the media/TLC). Two other sisters were victims. They need to be getting help.

Part 4

I believed her. I had no second thoughts. I didnt second guess her, I never had any doubt.

This special is painful, BTW. I'm really not sure what point their making.

Ter-rae - her father was supposed to be her protector and made her promise not to tell and he wouldnt do it again. She was 11. She would lock to door but he would unlock it.

It seems pretty clear that TLC is trying to be "inclusive" of races and religions. Ter-rae is wearing a head covering.

She found the number for RAINN and called it.

A little blurb about RAINN and the hotline. Anonymous and confidential. They also do online chats and dont collect IPs. Most kids say it was a family member.

RAINN recreates an online chats for TLC's bs.

They talk about the fear children have of not being believed or what would happen to them.

Ter -rae told her mother. Mother blamed herself for not protecting her.

Its important to have an adult who stands in her corner.

Ter-rae's father pled guilty and went to prison for 6 years. Ter-rae now runs the "young survivor's foundation."

Did they mention if all of their abused children got counseling? Were they at the seminar, too? (I don't want to know who they are. I just want to know if they got professional help.) And I really wonder about the 5th victim, if she got help. This has to be so traumatic for her, I'd think.

no, it was a small group of invited guests. Only Michelle, Jill and Jessa for the duggars. The rest were other victims or advocates.

I doubt the duggars learned anything at all in the seminar.

Of course not. They think they did nothing wrong. They don't understand at all why anyone is mad at them.

Remember, they are the ones that are godly and perfect, everyone else is heathen and going to hell.

Oh, trust me, I totally get that. It's still SO frustrating to watch.

I always try to see the best in people, and with the Duggars, at least the ones close to my age (my bday is about 2 weeks after Jessa's), I always hope that they will learn, or won't have a bajillion babies, or start wearing pants, etc. This documentary is just proof that I'm holding my breath with this family.

Yes, but they aren't married, so they can't act with the approval of their sainted new headships... they might jeopardize their prospects!

I honestly think they are just too far gone. The kool-aid was drunk down long ago and they aren't waking up.

Perhaps some of the younger kids will get out, but I think this is it for JB, Michelle, Jill and Jessa.

My guess is that they want to "protect" the other two daughters so that (in twisted fundyland logic) potential suitors won't see them as "damaged goods" (or whatever the term is that fundies would use).

Michelle had no business speaking on this subject. Fuck TLC for having her on as if she wasn't an enabler and fuck Michelle Duggar.

Reward her for leaving her girls u protected, TLC. Give her credibility after what she allowed to happen to "the others."

It's interesting that Jill and Jessa aren't listed as victims at all. They're just there to "learn." It's such a huge elephant in the room.

Oh yeah, I forgot, when you are not married or actively courting, you don't exist. You are just a sort of statue toted around for affect.

Something about planning ahead how to react? I'm not sure? Jill really isn't that bright, bless her heart.

The little girl (Kaelin?) is more articulate than Jill. I couldn't understand Jill's babbling about boundaries before finding yourself, like, um, in a situation. Jessa spouted some scripted bullshit about "safeguards" and Michelle was glad the girls could do this together. God, they're idiots.

So...Jim Bob wasn't invited to the seminar?

Why would he be? It's women's job to prevent this from happening, men can't control themselves so what can they do about it?

Sarcasm at them, not you.

They don't consider themselves victims. They have been told all their lives they were simply participants in "normal" young male behavior. & now that's it's been normalized..."this happens in sooooo many families"... they think they're immune.

Yeah, it kind of sounds like all this did was help them rationalize everything even better than they were before.

Wow, they're so brainwashed that they twisted what they learned so it can fit their beliefs.

I see why no sponsors were involved in this turd. Also explains the crap time slot. I'm still kind of shocked TLC ran an hour with no commercials.

Part 5

I'm proof that you can actually move on from this

Cheryl Burke was struggling with trauma from her abuse. When she was 2 her parents separated and she was quiet. She would sit in the corner. Her mom remarried and they hired a nanny and friend to help. When she was 5 the 60 year old friend began abusing her in a van on the way home from school. He would cuddle her, watch porn... He knew she was insecure. He "groomed" her by gradually gaining her trust.

Hopper - they pick children who are vulnerable and parents arent around.

Cheryl's abuser made her comfort him and make her feel responsible for his well being. When he tried to molest a step sister's friend he was caught. Cheryl had to testify when she was 6. She was afraid to see him face to face. She struggled on the stand but she told what happened and he got 20 years.

She had no confidence and was drawn to abusive men. She realized she was seeking men similar to her abuser.

Hopper - to be abused is to be treated like an object. You're not valued.

Botash - you have to develop a sense of being.

Cheryl developed an outlet in dance. In 2005 she was on dancing with the stars. It changed her life. She now teaches and built her confidence. She now wants to help other victims speak up.

Erin pushes for strong laws and legislation...

Botash - once the silence is broken there is hope. Most children can recover and move on once they intervene.

The 5 survivors have recovered (note the duggars are NOT counted towards the "survivor" count).

Erin - report if anyone touches you on the places covered by your swimsuit.

She reads letters from children she has taught.

She travels the country to promote "erins law" She wants to empower kids to speak up and know it isnt their fault.

If the law existed when she was a child the abuse would have ended earlier. Resources should also be provided to parents about warning signs. It also focuses on what educators can do to look for red flags like kids who dont want to go home.

The law has been passed in 26 states. She also wants federal legislation.

Erin goes to meet Kealan... she flies to Toronto and surprises her where Kealan is being interviewed. Kealan cries... She has signed books and a journal. They give eachother cards... It seems that Erin put the documentary together.

This special completely lost credibility by including the Duggars. I assume they did it to get the humpers to watch and perhaps report. Assuming, of course, that they can stay up this late... But yeah... a special just on abuse without all this "happy" music would have a lot more impact.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! And Jill got a line in about it "happening in SOOOOO MANY FAMILIES!" :angry-banghead:

...never bothering to even hint at the fact that it happened to *her* family.

So, Jill and Jessa never talked about the fact they were victims (I didn't watch, just reading here)? What was the point of including them if they weren't going to talk?

I take it the girls didn't acknowledge they were molested, or use that term specifically. Did M acknowledge that she used poor judgement and that's why there were five victims instead of one?

I'm not watching it, but I'm guessing other CSA victims are actually saying what was done to them. Opening themselves up. Sounds like the Duggars just had a pleasant day at the seminar. Doesn't sound like they opened themselves up like the other survivors. Am I wrong?

I was completely disgusted to see Michelle Duggar's face.

I thought they gave good information to help the population at large.....make parents aware of changes in behavior that could indiicate a problem. The hotline seemed to be of help as victims could have someone to talk to to work up their courage to change the situation and stop the abuse.

The best point is everyone should have the conversation about body safety. Maybe this will stop some molestation....depending on how many people actually watched it.

It'll be interesting to see the ratings on this.
