TLC Documentary on Sexual Abuse

TLC may be brain dead enough to give the Duggars the show they are supposedly pitching (I say supposedly because I am having a hard time believing that it is true) but Discovery Communications would likely have a say and would say "no". When TLC canceled 19 Kids, wasn't the final decision made by Corporate...Discovery Communications? (not sure, but I seem to recall they were deeply involved) It isn't TLC that appears on the NASDAQ stock exchange, it is Discovery Communications. After the Honey Boo Boo, Gypsy Sisters and 19 Kids fiascoes, if I was them, I would keep my foot on the neck of TLC because they obviously have made some huge mistakes recently.

I hope you are right on all counts. You would think that someone, somewhere along the chain of command, would have the common sense to say, "We are not giving these people (JimBob and Michelle) any further air time. Period." But then again, I thought TLC would immediately cancel the show, but they took their sweet time in doing so.

Jim Bob did say that they talking to many of their friends who had the same or worse happen in their homes so maybe 2/3 is accurate for the Gothard cult.

I just hate that no publication fox, people, or otherwise pointed out how off that number was. I mean I could maybe see Megyn Kelly not wanting to say anything during the interview but I at least expected some article covering the interview to mention something about this being incorrect and it's definitely not normal for children to do this to siblings.

I brought up the topic of the Duggar scandal to a friend who was raised fundie, as was their spouse, including attending some Gothard-related things. My friend noted that their spouse's family has a history of sexual abuse. From the sound of it, my friend did not think it was uncommon in the circles they grew up in.

It sickens me to think that the Duggars' excuse is that it happens in other homes, or even worse happens elsewhere. Like that's justification for concealing a crime and victim-blaming, not a reason to take a deep look at the way you live your life and examine if that had some effect on your child molesting other children, especially their own siblings.

I agree--but I do not think there is a solid consensus on how many there are. In another thread we have been talking about the validity of this 2/3 thing and it doesn't hold up. The number is more like 2 % of families---maybe---perhaps---based on some studies.

So yeah the media was negligent to let that slide, but there is no firm number to replace it with.

It's not just an article, it's this week's cover story. Everything on the Duggars gets mostly "angry faces" in the People rating system, yet the keep posting about them.

Before this scandal broke I had written this draft post about how angry I get whenever People posts something seemingly innocuous about the Duggars, like Jill's baby bump. It just builds up their ability to preach hate. I don't know if or how it will ever stop, but at the time I was going to suggest coming up with a hashtag and pick an hour for anyone willing to use it to see if we could get in trending. I no longer think that would have any impact other than venting my own frustration.

I realized after I posted it here that it was already in discussion elsewhere (I should have known I was late in the game!)

I understand your frustration, all press is good press so to speak, as long as they have any kind of audience...they will have a spotlight. :(

In light of Josh's sex scandel- part deux. I could see TLC dramatically abbreviating or cutting Jill and Jessa's involvement in the molestation documentary. They might want to cut their losses and distance themselves from the Duggar clusterf*ck before anything else happens!

There are some reports saying that the family is a little split now between members sympathetic to Josh and those just angry. If Jill or Jessa were to be predominantly angry and feel betrayed all over again by Josh, they might choose on their own to request TLC not to include them in the documentary (a request I would hope TLC would honour).

They're not going to re-edit the documentary at this point. What's in it is in it. It's not to late to pull it, but they probably won't.

I really hope TLC ends up pulling this documentary or at least edits the Duggars out. I don't know how they can air it with a clear conscience in the first place, but especially in light of the new scandal with Jessa posting about forgiveness and Jill posting that creepy sermon about sex...I don't want to hear their shitty thoughts on forgiving anymore!

They'll do it with the same conscience that shot, edited and aired 10 seasons of their show in the first place.

It would be interesting to research whether abuse is a symptom of the beliefs. Isolation & male domination. Or if those more likely to abuse and be abused end up pulled into that lifestyle because the structure makes it easier for them to abuse...then it gets passed down to the future generations. Gothard certainly has taken advantage of his own structure. The weirdo

As far as the Duggars go...I have and still believe Michelle was somehow abused and got lured into the life after losing cobttol of her body again when birth control didn't work. A compulsive "If I live EXACTLY according to rules, God will make everything ok." Relinquishing all control over her life to pretend she will stay 100% safe...In fact I wouldn't doubt she believes all Josh's problems are a result of mom and dad being sinners before they joined Gothard.

There's the perennial favorite: "Everything happens for a reason."

:angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

From personal experience, I hate that one too, especially in regards to sexual abuse.

This is the worst. I heard this ALL the time growing up. "Pay attention to God's voice in these moments. When somethng like this happens, he has something big in store for you."

Erin Merryn wasn't hard enough on the Duggars when they first interviewed her about it, IMO. She just reiterated the repeated line of "they're being victimized in the media all over again" which Jill and Jessa latched on to. Though I guess she told them they handled it wrong, so there's one plus at least.

I do hope TLC chooses to edit Jill and Jessa's segment out. I was under the impression that it was probably going to be just a quick shot of them attending a workshop so it should be easy to snip. Or at least trim it so they don't speak. Judging by Jill and Jessa's IG post, they're covering for Josh again. Jessa with preaching about forgiveness and Jill for advertising her pastor talking about blaming the woman and what not.

Okay, im coming out of my dark lurking shadows. Tell me... Is this showing up still to play Friday because all I see is a say 'yes to the dress' marathon... I think they actually pulled it thanks to the lovely Joshly Madison scandal... And the Twitter. OkCupid. Facebook. Yeah. Probably thought it would be in their best interests to get as far away from this family as possible.

It's scheduled to air Sunday night at 10pm EST. If the latest story is true about Josh being violent with the stripper/porn actress, then they have even more reason to edit out any supportive comments from his sisters.

I'm sorry if this was posted before since it's a couple of months old but I just came across this and was surprised:

https://www.yahoo.com/parenting/abuse-s ... 00852.html

I hadn't realized that they knew her before and had her speak at their house two years ago to the younger kids.

I find it weird that they had her come and speak to the kids in 2013.

I mean--I guess that is when the opportunity arose--but someone like Erin should have been talking to the kids many years BEFORE 2013.

It is also telling that Erin had no idea that this had happened in their family. I thought the Duggars have insisted this wasn't a secret? Clearly it was a secret even inside the immediate family---which is dangerous.

If anyone could use the information that sexual abuse had happened inside a particular family, it would be the immediate members of that family and the person they chose to come and teach their children about sexual abuse.

I do not understand why a sexual abuse/protect the children special is airing so late at night.

Is there some reason they want to show it after all the kids are in bed? All the kids (all over America and in a lot of other places, too) are aware that this happened. I would have thought that the target audience for a "avoid sexual abuse/what to do about it if it happens/how to get appropriate help" special would be all the young children that have been watching the Duggars for years. Its these young viewers that need some appropriate context.

And unlike every other TLC episode ever, it's only airing once with no repeats. I guess they only feel obligated to air it to make up for all the past bullshit. They don't feel obligated to make sure anyone ever actually sees it.

The ten o'clock slot until round six in the morning I think is used for content that might not be suitable for children, at least on some channels in the US, like last week when I got home, TNT had a show on and the language used wouldn't be found earlier in the evening. In regards to the special, especially with a topic like this, parents would probably want to pre-watch the material before watching with their children if they choose to do so. DVR is a thing too. It cuts down on the chance that a young kid would happen upon it accidentally and suddenly the parents have to have a conversation they aren't prepared to have.

I just checked the Australian TLC tv guide and it isn't showing here unfortunately. 10pm Sunday night equates to mid Monday afternoon and no sign of it at all.

That was my point.

This show should be aimed directly at the child viewers of the show. And any parent's who have allowed their children to watch the Duggars have had a lot of time to get prepared for the conversation.

In fact--they better damn well have already had the conversation because every kid that is old enough to follow the Duggars' tv show is also old enough to have noticed that Josh has been in the News for months and that millions of people are discussing how he molested 5 little girls. With all the public defense of Josh, it would be very easy for a child to get confused.

Not wanting one's children to watch this show is one thing---any parent has the right to turn off the tv or change the channel.

But airing the show late at night to limit the chance of children seeing it is just perpetuating the culture of silence.

Unless, of course, the special is going to be a tabloid style freak fest. Then yeah, that's the kind of show that needs to be on late at night. TLC is claiming they are trying to help, though....
