No, sorry for the confusion, her older sister allowed her father to choose her husband. If you check Ashley's Instagram she makes a long rambling post about it. 

Just to add, she says that when her sister was little she used to ask her dad to pick her husband for her, and that it shows she really trusted him.

And I believe Ashley is 21 or 22. 

She's 21 in May.

IIRC, Nathan helps out with Gil's tree surgeon business, is trained as an EMT, was working toward getting a pilot's license, and is studying - or studied - at Crown to be a preacher.  Seems like he's got some skills and a solid work ethic.  

I'm sure the Rod's wouldn't want to miss this wedding (assuming they get an invite), especially if UP is filming.  Wonder how they'd deal with the crowds and general unfundiness of NYC...

Is it just me or are they holding hands in one of the first ice skating pictures? It may be a weird shot, but it looks that way.

I think there is hand holding in that picture and perhaps also in one of the carriage ride pictures too.

Did anyone else see the photo of Erin and Chad holding hands and praying?  I wonder if they show her finding out she's pregnant.  She should have found out around Xmas time.  Also, I guess Carlin and Tory were left to keep down the homestead?  Erin, Lawson and Nate were all up in NYC with Gil and Kelly.  I guess Whitney and Zach were still in Tenn as well.  

They also showing the entire family as well as Ashley and Nate cheering in the last picture, so it probably isn't cheering for the courtship.

Their beaks aren't actually touching, so I think those duckies are just reciting their favorite bible verses to each other, with their eyes closed. Not pictured: a younger duckling chaperone, just out of the frame of the picture.

Gil and Kelly's presence almost makes me thing he asked her to do more than court.  Reminds me of when they were in DC last year at this time...

So this is kinda wierd to me--under fundy rules, shouldn't HER parents have been present to chaperone the ceremony, not his?

I'm noticing a lot of physical contact in these photos with Gil looking on happily. I'm glad that they're able to at least hug without feeling like sexual deviants, but I can't shake the feeling that these fundies are a lot less concerned about "protecting the hearts" of their male spawn. It's almost like it's not really about their emotional health, but about keeping the fundie girls clean and pure for their wedding day. No, that can't be it...

They were skating in Bryant Park. They also had a carriage ride in Central Park. I don't believe they took the NYC pictures before Christmas. (Nathan said he would ask her then.) December was VERY warm in NYC. Christmas day was 70degrees. There are to many winter coats for December.

But in the photos, the carriage & the Salyer's house is decorated for Christmas & there are Christmas lights at the Bryant Park rink-- are you arguing that they filmed this in November, or in January?

I think their instagrams show they were in NYC over Christmas and we know they were at the Duggars over New Years so I think the Courtship proposal did happen when they said it did.

I remember Erin posting something in early-mid December with Carson in NY.  

As for Christmas decorations--- many families put them up right after Thanksgiving.  Just as some don't take them down until well after New Years.  Varies by family and how important they are to them.  I think NYC is decorated for the month of December. 

 I honestly don't remember the weather in early-mid December, I just remember wishing for Queen Elsa on Christmas because 70 degrees is not a northern Christmas.

Common sense would dictate so but I assume that since the parents gave their permission for the relationship to begin they now have to bow to teach their daughter to follow her new headship

Maybe both sets of parents were there but hers are camera shy.  I also hope the family (including kids) realizes what they're in for.  The last thing I want to see is a Salyer kid turning into Jessica Seewald 2.0.

I found the NYC post on thebatesfam instagram from Dec. 18th.

While December was warmer than usual it was definitely not 70 all the time.  Not to mention most of the pics of Ashley and the Bates all show them with open coats and no hats.  Frequently without gloves as well.

Yeah, Ashley might know what she is signing up for and be cool with it, but that may (thankfully) not extend to her family and they might prefer to keep out of the spotlight. My parents are quite shy people, I know if I was on a "reality" TV show, they'd let me do my own thing since I'm an adult who can make her own decisions, but they wouldn't want any piece of it themselves and wouldn't want to be involved. 

It's not unheard of. Derick's brother has an unlocked instagram but other than that, he doesn't seem to be out trying to ride the fame coat tails or anything and has a normal girlfriend who wears pants/shorts/tank tops.
