All Things Dillard - Part 4

Slight aside, but I'm just wondering if the way Jill says "Israel" is a Southern thing or not. Here in England, the general pronunciation of Israel is "Iz-rail", but in the gender reveal clip Jill pronounces it "Iz-ree-ull", like she's added the word "real" onto the end of "is".

I'm definitely not a Jill supporter or a leg humper, but:

Since he is her kid, why does it matter to anyone how she pronounces his name? She's not talking about the nation of Israel, she's talking about or to her baby. The " American" and " Southern" stereotyping is getting really old and is a form of elitism and becoming akin to snobbery, IMO.

I'm not being a snob. I just find differences in pronunciation interesting and was genuinely curious.

Yeah, unlike the maxi skirt nonsense on the other thread, I don't think anyone here is being elitist about the pronunciation. Just pointing out the differences. I also find it interested. A while back one of the threads talked a lot about regional dialect and stuff. I enjoyed that.

HA! This sounds as if it is straight from the mouths of FOX news... "Those liberal Professors and their 'Ivory Towers'!*" Essentially, it is education-shaming. Do you really want to call an education or knowledge in linguistics, foreign language, or even a simple culturing experience - 'elitism'?

---rant---

No wonder people roll their eyes when they hear an "American" or "Southern" accent, because, on the contrary, Americans are elitist. We may get frustrated when others cant speak English; meanwhile, the POTUS couldn't pronounce "nuclear" properly!

Hoping baby-Israel learns a foreign tongue. I think exposing our children to our many languages develops not just the linguistic ear, but also softens the tongue, making it easier for children to pick up other language. Soo, as we learn more of each other’s languages, maybe we'll be able to tear down the barriers of regionalism that have retarded the development of our sense of nationhood.

*Never heard the term? wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivory_tower ( FYI- I say all of this respectably, with no mal-content.)

American and I pronounce it Iz-rail

Same here and usually hear it with only 2 syllables.

This is where I say check your regionalism at the door (for Americans). We may be one country, but there are many regions, and many cultures and mannerisms within those regions. Unless something is blatantly offensive (racial, ethnic, homophobic slurs for example) don't assume anything. Sometimes a simple "I don't understand" is all that's needed.

Your formatting is exhausting to read. I am quite worn out after reading that.

That's calling ACTING, and it's how they get people interested in staying tuned. And it worked as look how long people have been discussing it on FJ.

Considering JB brags that they raise their kid with a "missionary mindset" and that many of them put MISSIONARY down as future career goal, I doubt Jillymuffin going off (with a husband of course) to be a missionary is more reason for him to brag.

ETA: Did I said acting? I meant OVER-ACTING. Way to play to the back row, JB.

To the bolded (bolding is mine), I agree that they are always acting for the cameras and much of it is over acting. But (sorry!) to me, JimBob is not someone with much acting talent or someone who seems able to hide his real emotions very well. I mean, the Megan Kelly interview (plus all of the video of JB ever) is pretty much proof of that. The mini breakdowns before walking the girls down the isle at their weddings (sure, emotional, but over the top)...In other words, I don't think its all acting. I think the real JB shows through quite a bit.

And the Duggars are all talk. Besides doing talks at homeschool conferences (which almost everybody in their circles does) and going on little trips to El Salvador to shove Bibles down peoples throats, what have we seen them DO to further their "missionary mindset". OH. OH WAIT. The SHOW, PEOPLE. The show is such a huge mission field  . Anyway, my theory is that JB's mindset is to capitalize on whatever he can with this "mission" but at the same time is not happy with his beloved daughter moving so far away (this is JillyMuffy, guys, remember!).

Just for you, I removed some 'italics' and such in my quoted post, here - much better, indeed! Otherwise, my apologies - it is difficult to translate and adapt emotion, or emphasize more than one statement, without clogging paragraphs or adding unnecessary length to the post. I'm learning... :geek:

That makes total sense, though I wouldn't compare walking girls down aisle to his bible time reaction as wedding is a whole day of heighten emotion, but anyway you totally set me straight.

But a few things I'm confused about now. If JB didn't want Jillymuffin to go off with a missionary:

1) while Derick was in Tibet was he keeping his missionary interest a secret?

2) why did JB say that is the big thing they have in common and in fact mention to Derick she is really interested in C. America.

3) Rumor is they are going to El Salvador with SOS-- isn't JB BFFs with Mike Schadt? So I would guess that before any "opportunity" came to Derick, it would go through JB. At least to feel him out. Who knows, I could see JB pitching it. And this all happen pre-scandal... so Mike looked forward to this family pimping his ministry-- why would he want to piss of JB.

4) Have you noticed how many staged announcements they've done during "Bible Time?" Ah well I'm sure this one is different. The Duggars don't recreate things (except for gender reveals) or lie (insert your favorite one here)

ETA: took out an extraneous word

ITA. I've heard both pronunciations, in different areas of the country. I don't think there's a specific geographic way of pronouncing it.

I live in Canada (close to the Washington border) and people here pronounce it both ways. I've notice the same thing as well in the Seattle area people pronouncing it both ways. I personally say it both ways. If I'm reading the word aloud it's Iz-re-ull, if the spelling isn't right in front of me its Iz-rail.

Yes, I started my drinking earlier yesterday-- meant ministry mindset, but let's face it, you know JB is all about the missionary mindset when it comes to Meechelle, though I always imagine him humping every which way he can get a grip. Ew.

But, I do stand by JB being involved in setting up Derick's missionary position.

Anyone else want to try?

Derick has a soul patch!

Soul patch, porn stash, and Oakleys (knockoffs) Tell that guy that good news he will find a good Christian woman, but guess what, you will be in a no touchy courtship, quicky marriage, and worshipping a wannabe cult leader.

There's so many split hairs here that I need a haircut.

Here's a Derick throwback

Holy Moses, Derick was in a BAR (or a food establishment that serves alcohol)!! Yes, I see the straw in the glass which probably means someone was drinking a soda, but they were in proximity of the devil's brew!!

I seriously wonder what kind of life he lived pre-prayer-buddy period. Did he drink alcohol? Go on dates? Kiss girls? Avert his eyes?

Even if he had strong convictions about those things, as the man inside the Pistol Pete costume, he probably went to a lot of after-game parties.

I've also wondered about Derick's pre-prayer partner days. I bet he was slightly more normal. I mean, I doubt he was sleeping around or anything. But I'm sure he's kissed some girls. He really does seem so normal in a lot of older photos. But I guess you never really know.

There are pictures of Derick swimming/outdoors in the summer and he's SHIRTLESS. I'm too lazy to go looking for them now, but they exist! Those days are over. But, he is an adult and that is his choice (so long as it IS his choice, and I'm not 100% convinced it is, but, again, he's an adult so whatever, his life).

Heh, the facial hair Derick is sporting in that throwback picture is something I've only ever known as a "flavour saver" and guys I knew grew them for that exact reason. But in Derick's case, I'm sure he just thought it looked cool.

:D
