By the way, any deets on Lucas' upcoming wedding plans?  I assume there are wedding plans; isn't there a fiancée...

...unless she "noped" out of the engagement when she got deeper into the absolute breathtaking insanity of Geoff and the Botkin Borg crazy...

...or maybe she'd already kissed another guy and wasn't considered suitably pure or something.

Can't find them on the Knot/or a wedding website, but the date is November 21st, according to their registry.

She's got a Pinterest board for engagement rings (if this is the right Kara), but nothing for wedding ideas, which is a little unusual.

There’s nothing modest about those rings!

Audit has this in her Twitter bio.  Which I mean I’m with her, this is confusing.

I hope that someday she feels comfortable speaking about what happened to her and can encourage other people to come forward. Geoff has been in church leadership with other highly questionable men all over the world, and I don’t believe for a minute that his daughter-in-law is the first person he’s trampled on.

This points dead center to the extent of Geoff's egomaniacal patriarchal pffffftpflegleblartgl!!!11!!!.   My bullshit meter pegs in the red zone when I contemplate Geoff's position that he is God's mini-me (because penis holder!) and therefor must be (and deserves to be) both feared and respected.

...and then I ponder his shallow, pretentious faux-intellectual Western Conservatory!  and his daughters held in thrall to this crap into adulthood.  Yuuuuck.

Several years ago -- long enough so that I am marveling how much time I've put into pondering the Botkins -- Geoff was on a panel discussing the weighty topic of whether Reformed rappers should be welcomed or side-eyed. Reformed churches have opinions about which kinds of music  can be used for religious purposes. Rap does make sense in that it, like their theology, is wordy. (And that reminds me that Lin Manuel Miranda said he used hip-hop for most of Hamilton because if you want to cram history and constitutional debates into a musical, you need all the words you can fit in.) But it also makes the elders uneasy for all sorts of reasons. Anyway, the panelists were up there looking uncomfortable, trying to sound inclusive while fretting about "the culture."

Then it was Geoff's turn and he went off on the rappers as "disobedient cowards" who deserved to be punished. I remember the phrase because it was so passionate and weird and overblown. Many followup discussions ensued. It was a tempest in the Western Conservatory teapot.

Audri is yet another example of women in fundie land leaving after marriage. It’s sad to me that it’s so extremely hard to leave fundie land for women while they are single because they are totally alone. This is why I hold very little hope for female fundies like Jana Duggar or Sarah Maxwell leaving while single. Maybe if they get married they will have a chance. Time and time again, a female left with a boyfriend of husband. They had a supportive partner which made it easier to leave. But what happens if they want to leave and  their partner is a piece of shit fundie through and through? You’re screwed.

Being not into the Christian music scene -- are all the Reformed rappers white rappers?

The article is kind of obnoxious in the way the author arrogantly hates rappers and rap:

There is a reason these slimy sorts gravitate towards Rap music: in it’s barest form Rap requires less musical ability than some other genres. You don’t need to sing, or play a musical instrument; the performer only has to rhyme in rhythm. Of course, Rap isn’t always so stripped down, and it can involve all sorts of instruments. But what sets it apart – it’s focus on the verbal over the musical – is also what makes it appealing to thugs whose creativity only extends to the many words they can rhyme with “ho”.

I guess you could level similar accusations against a lot of Christian hymnal music.

But he goes on to quote some amazing lyrics and artists.

I just looked up Christian rapper Shai Linne on Wiki

Quote

Linne was an atheist for most of his childhood and dates his conversion to 1999.  Linne is Reformed in his soteriology (doctrine of salvation), and his 2008 album The Atonement, included a song "Mission Accomplished", which defended limited atonement.

Limited Atonement is another total rabbit hole to me, but I have a general idea of Reformed now, based on the lyrics to "Atonement" by Shai Linne, which seems to cover everything.

Quote

Who is God? God is the universe's Creator
And Sustainer plus the only Savior, there is no one greater
He triune, holy, omnipotent, omniscient, absolute
Loving, sovereign and righteous are a few of His attributes
How do we know this? Well, we know this from the Bible
Where God has revealed Himself- anything else is just an idol
What's the Bible about? Man's complete ruin in sin
And what God has done in Christ to bring us to Him again
What is sin? Sin is the breaking of God's law
Plus our condition, which means from birth we all got flaws
What's the result? The result is by nature we're God's enemies
And must pay the penalty unless God provides the remedy
What the remedy? The remedy is the cross of Christ
Where He suffered all the strikes for the lawless type
I've been rescued by the Lamb, I'm convinced that He's risen
And blessed is the man whose sins are forgiven!

Just fall back, and with the eyes of faith
Behold the beauty of surprising grace
Because the Lamb has died, third day He had to rise
He's magnified- God's wrath is satisfied

Just fall back- there's an atonement now
The cross of Christ is holy ground
Because the Lamb has died, third day He had to rise
He's magnified- God's wrath is satisfied

Regeneration- the Holy Spirit's true work in His love
To the elect, who receive new birth from above
Expiation- expiation means God's removed my filthiness
The old testament type was the goat into the wilderness
Redemption- we've been freed from slavery to sin
And His very own blood is the price He paid, my friend
Propitiation- Propitiation means since the Lamb has died
His work is finished- God's wrath is satisfied
Adoption- adoption means God is now my Father
I got the hottest Poppa and by the Spirit holler Abba
Reconciliation means there's no more enmity
God is now a friend to me, we're no longer enemies
Justification- God declares us righteous
Sanctification- we're being made into His likeness
Glorification- that's what happens at the finish
When God conforms believers perfectly to Christ's image!

God's grace is magnificent, He slayed His innocent
Son- through faith and repentance we get the benefits
What is faith? Faith is a gift from God- when we receive this
We trust and treasure the person and finished work of Jesus
Repentance? Repentance is turning from your sin
And trusting Christ as the Spirit cleanses you within
What is grace? Oh, grace is unmerited favor
Our inheritance major 'cause we cherish the Savior
Right, and if I may quote again, we were doomed with Satan
But believers get Jesus' righteousness through imputation
Imputation? God takes Jesus' righteousness amount
Through faith He credits it into the Christian's account
Anything else? Well, I guess this overview must suffice
But none of this is possible apart from union with Christ
And finally, once you know the ways of the Lord than the
Only thing that you can say is Soli Deo Gloria!

Just fall back, and with the eyes of faith
Behold the beauty of surprising grace
Because the Lamb has died, third day He had to rise
He's magnified- God's wrath is satisfied

I can see how this all might get under Geoff's skin, though, even if it's theologically aligns with his beliefs.

That’s some beautifully credal stuff, some of that!!

Only coward I can point out in this discussion is Geoff himself. Evidently afraid to actually, Y’know, read what he’s condemning?!

Geoff is one of the whitest white men alive and he could never believe that a black man has got it going on in the theology dept.   Plus, being an arrogant patriarch, his take is automatically the correct take.  Zero reflection or introspection are allowed because it could prove fatal.

Yes, even this atheist felt moved by it how beautifully he laid it all out.

Well, Geoff’s finally gone beyond Trump and is trying to advise… the whole European Union? Complete with a video that looks concerningly like a white nationalist propaganda piece.

He’s really doubling down on his love for Hungary and Hungarians’ rejection of immigration and socialism. He’s never mentioned Hungary’s universal healthcare or payments for families having children or state mandated school starting at age three or laws against homeschooling. So maybe he means some other socialism. Either way, it’s obviously God’s favorite country. I wonder if he’s going to try to revamp the conference he had planned there in 2018.

A Botkin wedding? Can MamaJuneBug wangle an invitation to that one? We need an insider. You know the Botkinetti will dust off their harps for this one.

I took a few minutes to google "spinster" (up to age 26) and came up with thornback (age 26+).

But back to Geoff -- he's a nasty piece of work and getting worse.  100% probability he's a Sebastian Gorka fanboi and came close to wetting himself when Tucker Carlson went to Hungary to leg hump Orban in person.

Thinking about the four VF/VF adjacent guys: Doug Phillips, Doug Wilson, Geoff Botkin and Scottie Brown.

  • Doug Wilson runs his own mini empire in Moscow, ID
  • Geoff is a legend in his own mind -  not even a big fish in a small pond, more like a guppy flopping around in a puddle and living off the largesse of his son's business
  • Scottie Brown is where he always was, blogging and promoting the same old same old  -- he's hosting a father-daughter retreat in October with no women  speaking, and pastoring a small Baptist church. NCIFC is now Church and Family Life.  Don't know if he's anti vax, but he's anti vax mandate because cowpox or some shit.
  • Doug Phillips is in the wind; who the heck knows where he is or what he's doing

No idea where the daughter-in-law to be is on the Botkin cray-cray continuum. I hope they move somewhere away from Bot hive central and have some capacity to live their own lives, but could be Lucas and Kara are both deep into the insanity and it's part of the attraction.

I shall do my best!  One of their registry items is an Auburn University bandana for a dog. Presuming Kara matriculated there?  I’m not up on Unis in the southeast. Wonder what its reputation is - Party school or a couple degrees removed from Bob Jones U?

Auburn is a private party school for the privileged. It's not fundie. I can't speak to their academic standards. They were one of the 4 schools in the southeast who started chanting an ugly expression against President Biden over the past weekend before their football game.

Ugh & double ugh. I’m officially over any hope that Lukas (right?) is salvageable.

Will keep my eyes open for signs of Audri at the wedding.
Kidding!  The way the Covid numbers are in TN, I won’t be any farther south than I have to be for the foreseeable future.
