The name Eleanor originated with Eleanor of Aquitaine, who was named after her mother Aenor and called Alienor, meaning "the other Aenor." I can't find a good source for an etymology of Aenor, so that's not what they were going for.

However, the name Ellen/Elaine/Helen, another possible source for the name Ellie, does mean "bright, shining light" or more specifically "sunbeam" or "torch," so it appears they got it approximately right this time.

Mines a variation of that name. Also has a meaning of 'bright and light'.

On the ski skirt topic, was anyone else surprised that Kelly said that girls could wear what they like once they're married or leave the house? Uhhh are they allowed to move out without being married and I didn't notice??

They're probably "allowed" to, but I think they'd cut off all financial support. If they are a just-graduated hair dresser, or a piano teacher, or Bible school teacher,  (zero benefits or pay for healthcare yourself) and then they have to pay rent, and also save for their future wedding, I'm not sure any of them would take that option . . .

There are a bunch of football game photos posted on Alyssa’s and Kelly’s instagram. I find it totally cringeworthy that the team name appears to be “Momma’s Boy”- for obvious reasons...and grammatically- why not “Mama’s Boys” at the very least?

Spoiler

of all things to pick on.....it's a squeaky-clean team name and all, but how on earth is "momma" less grammatically correct than "mama"?

Perhaps the poster isn't American? The Oxford English Dictionary says that the "momma" spelling is mainly prevalent in the US, which "mama" is more universal to English-speakers world wide.

tl; dr: both spellings are correct according to the OED

And I thought it was about the Boy part, as the team is obviously a group of people aka boys. I read the momma/mama change purely as a reference to the OC‘s background.

Have we discussed Jackson's 18th birthday weekend with paintball and hot tubbin'*?  Allegedly he thought he was flying to Florida to visit Alyssa and John, and instead  his bros and bro-in-laws and Wissmanbro ambush him at the airport and take him away for a weekend of wide-stanced godly young man fun. I hope he had a refundable airline ticket, I can't imagine wasting an airline ticket on such shenanigans.

*"Hot Tub Full of Godly Young Men" sounds like a terrible, or wonderful, porno.

LOL at picture #2. "Hey y'all, let's all stand in a huddle and take picture of our boots touching!"

I wonder how many takes that picture took. Frankly, one is too many.

Hopefully he was told someone purchased the ticket as a gift and he didn’t buy one himself. I’d be pissed if I spent money on a ticket and didn’t get to use it or get the money back.

So, do I get this right? Every Bates son that has dipped his toe in the dating/courtship pool has been now a broken courtship?

What’s going on there? I don’t think numerous relationships are a problem at all but in their case it’s surprising. Even JB has been able to marry off one son without having to do a detour. Aren’t Gil and Kelly desperate to get them out of the house? I guess Nathan and Lawson aren’t there a lot anyway but still. They are definitely old enough to stand on their own feet (especially as they have no university dept) and in their family that means marriage.

Have Kelly and Gil realised that their ideal isn’t working? I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the reality has changed a lot from their tv narrative. For example- I believe they don’t care at all anymore if the married daughters and DIL wear pants. Kelly probably is joining them when they shop them. They only stick to skirts only at home because there is no way to sell that shit. They probably regret coming up with that big time. And it seems as if the young men are all pretty unsupervised and can meet women without having to be chaperoned or report to their parents.
As soon as Katie is married off we might see a shift. To get a new season they must either have all daughters and dil pregnant at the same time or finally marry of their sons. I cannot see how they will stay relevant for tv otherwise.

I think Gil and Kelly place the blame on the women for the broken courtship. We know that’s their MO for many issues and I’m sure it applies here. There may have not been broken courtships with their daughters cause it was presented as a non-option for them once they agree to a courtship. It seems in that the women tend to be the one to end things in their culture. It wouldn’t surprise me if Kelly has some choice words for the women behind closed doors.

Do you remember a few years back there were a lot of FJ members who said that JB & M should ask Kelly for advice on finding spouses for their kidults, that Kelly was a pro matchmaker. Things sure have changed.

Also, not sure about Josh but Joe and JD  married after their first courtship.

Yeah, I don't think the Bates daughters ever feel like they could end a courtship. Plus for the daughters this is their way out of living in a house where their parents constantly watch them with a camera system all over the house. This is their chance to become adults, so they probably don't want to end them.

I really think the Bates sons must be total assholes if they can't even get ATI fundie maidens to marry them.

The girls are getting out whereas the sons’ partners are opting in. Very different circumstance, I agree.

We also can't assume that we know about all courtships. We have no idea of JD or Joe have had broken courtships or not theoretically.

We also don't know if any of the Bates girls had courtships before their current spouses.

The Bates seem to announce a courtship as soon as the pictures from Taryn are available. So I don't think any of the girls have had failed ones. However, there is the interesting comment from Evan to Carlin when she and Katie were shown visiting his family. He had written a song that "she had inspired" that included lines about a guy not appreciating her and breaking her heart but that he wouldn't. That would indicate she was talking to someone or interested in someone who did not have an interest in her.

It does beg the question if a Bates girl was in a bad courtship if she would feel empowered enough to walk away. I'm not so sure they would or could. It is interesting that all of the Bates girls supposedly got it right on the first try as far as courtship to marriage. Not one of them picked a dud? Statistically that is improbable. I've had more than a few bad ex's. These girls were quite sheltered and not very worldly/experienced. Hard to believe they all knew exactly what they wanted/needed in a potential spouse.

I do think the Bates guys have a tough sell on their hands when it comes to family. A guy can marry one of the girls and move away. He doesn't have to be a Chad Paine in the family. They only have to play nice with Kelly and the rest of the family until the wedding in theory. While most of them have stuck around (probably in part for television money), through the family's beliefs, they can put a stop to some of the interference.

A girl marrying into the family has a tougher road. Not only will she have to please and appease Kelly Jo and Gil, I'm betting some of those older girls aren't easy to deal with either. My ex's sister and brother were a pain in the rear. I can't imagine 18 of them.

I think its also a matter of them having too high standars for potential brides. If one of them wanted to marry a Kaylee Rodrigues for example i am sure she wouldnt break the courtship.

I've always wondered whether the girls ever felt like they could end a courtship for those reasons and also after seeing Kelly pressuring Brandon and Bobby both about proposing. It wasn't enough that both girls were courting and that they knew both boys were going to propose. They knew why Brandon was waiting the class he was taking and he wanted to save up money afterwards but Kelly was still kept pressuring him. Then pressuring Tori when she wanted to wait until after she graduate to plan her wedding. She seems like she'd really like to marry her daughters of the second they meet someone. Seeing how she acted its hard to imagine that any of her daughters think they could call of a courtship.

So this week was the first episode of the new season of Bringing up Bates. I couldnt find the episode online but i read the recap and it is really old footage anyway. There was some new info on the livestream they usually do before the show though:

  • Jackson is going to Alert for the next 2 months and a half. When asked why and what he was going to do there Kelly started to reply that it was basically a christian summer camp for boys (Jackson is 18 by the way, a bit old for summer camps) but she was promptly interrupted by Gil that asured us it is not a camp at all but an institution to train in emergency response, compared it to being an emt (lol, i guess doing 2 months on Alert will qualify him to work for Medicorps) and to military training.
  • Trace was behind the camera but he did talk to say that he is doing fine about the breakup. Kelly used that moment to mention that the Kahles visiting them was featured in the episode, but it was really awkward.
  • About Tori due date Gil mentioned that the baby will probably come early because of the clotting disorder. Correct me if i am wrong but i think its the first time they mention that Tori also has the disorder (that makes 3 out of 6 married Bates sisters).
  • I loled when Gil was asked about the tree bussiness, since we know he has not worked there for years now. He said he is taking a break because of his shoulder surgery (i thought lying was a sin), but that soon he will return an pointed that now that all the boys are working for Chad he only has Isaiah to work for him. Aparently Nathan is also going to return home soon from wherever he is.

Isn't this the first Bates son to go to ALERT?
