When I lived all over southern Africa, I had a friend who was a safari guide and he told me he could always identify tourists by their nationality as soon as they served pap. Which is maize meal, sort of similar to grits but more dense (some people make it as thick as to eat by hand). It tastes like nothing, but I didn't mind it with the sauces, usually it was like a vegetable accompaniment, there was one with a tasty peanut sauce in Zimbabwe that I liked. Anyway, he was like Americans come in two stripes - you will either try to mix jam with peanut butter in there, or Nutella and make it a dessert, or you'll drown it in ketchup. I asked him about various Europeans and he said the Russians ate anything and everything and the others wouldn't touch the pap...

I did not like pap! I don't really remember having sauces with it, though I think my host family ate it with ketchup.

I can’t answer for her, but I was under the impression it was directed towards the comments proclaiming certain foods were gross or inedible (barring food sensory or medical issues.)

There are a few foods I think are utterly disgusting and would not eat on a dare, bet or even starvation. Strawberries and peanut butter are pretty much on the top of that list. Chitlins & cilantro are at the top too.

Now, give me grits (with butter and/or cheese), okra (fried, pickled or even boiled), tortillas (preferably homemade), black beans and rice and I'll be like a fat kid with cake for days on end.

*calls dibs on @feministxtian's strawberries and cilantro*

I put salt and  Parmesan  cheese on my oatmeal.

Cheddar cheese, chives, black pepper and a fried egg on my oatmeal.

I also love it with ground flax, brown sugar and a little milk, on days when I really want sweet.

Ice cream and everything breakfast. Except eggs. But I'm severely intollerant to those. And also I don't eat meat.... so. Ice cream and all breakfast carbs!

A few commenters on the food pics on Instagram were really praising the how interesting the food looked and how they hadn't thought of trying that sort of thing.

I know not to be too judgmental about food knowledge, and I'm certainly biased (beans, rice, and salsa were my parents' pre-payday-week meal my entire life), but I can't fathom for the life of me how someone following the Dillards and who knows how to use Instagram comments truly hasn't pictured beans + cheese + tortillas as a food combination.

I really try not to be judgmental (a mighty struggle, because I'm a judgy bitch), but really? You live in the US and you've never heard of Mexican food? You've never driven past a Taco Bell/Chipotle/Del Taco/mom & pop Mexican place and wondered what they served? Or been to one?

Also, I propose a new term for fundie adaptations of Mexican food where they take all the flavor out: Maxwellican, or maybe Maxican for short.

I used them when I found out my daughter at the age of four could open child proof lids.  I heard a suspicious ratting sound coming from her room and discovered her stuffing calcium gummies by the handful .  She really didn't eat that many, but I didn't know if it would make her sick.  The woman on the phone said it was fine.  I was very emphatic that she never do that again.  She had a tantrum when I took the bottle away.  She was four.

I called the poison hot line when Miniway was one. I was doing laundry and had to go do something and left the laundry soap open on the bench. It comes in something that really does look like a big squeeze so he got it down and drank some. The woman said to observe him but he didn’t get sick at all. It did teach me how quick they can be though.

Not only have I never had grits, okra or chitterlings, I have never even heard of them.

I try to try new things but I do realise that there are probably houndreds of countries whose cousine I have never tried. I’ve had burritos though. :)

When I was growing up (I'm 51), our small down didn't have any of those places. I never saw a Mexican food place (I think it was a Taco John's) until I was in high school, but I was too "scared" to eat there at the time.

Further randomly topical conversation:

I love me some cilantro. I can't eat peanut butter anymore since I had my gall bladder removed. I can only eat about a pound of strawberries in a year (not a typo) but I do like them in my smoothies.

The first time I went grocery shopping in Montreal, I stared in equal parts horror and fascination at the frozen frog's legs and escargot. I now know where i can buy live snails.

Mr Wrangler learnt the hard way that almost anything can be used to draw with. He was parenting Sea Filly 2(then around 3) while I took SF1 to the doctors. He gave SF2 some jelly beans as a snack while he answered a phone call from work, when he returned she was happily drawing on the walls with the damp ends of the beans.  She was sucking on them and then using them to paint .

I've had pap at a pan-African themed restaurant, and yeah I salt and peppered it like I do grits. If they'd had bacon I'd have put some on too! I didn't think to try ketchup.

I can't tolerate cheese at all, the texture and taste just gross me out. I can't do cilantro either, because it tastes like soap to me. I've had rice and several quinoa dishes made with a lot of cilantro in Peru, and to me it just tastes like they mixed in dish soap.

I have heard that there are some genetics involved with those who get a soap like taste when they eat Cilantro. I love Cilantro and I know that it is in the Parsley Family...I get the soapy taste when I eat Parsley, but not Cilantro.

How about others? Anyone else get the soapy taste when they eat Parsley?

I haven’t had parsley in so long that I don’t remember. But with cilantro, if I get too much mixed in without enough off-setting spice, in salsa - I ALWAYS forget and think I didn’t rinse my dishes well enough !:my_biggrin:

What's weird or interesting is that one of my daughters can't abide cilantro, but I think she can eat coriander and she loved Indian food, as do I.  Cilantro is the leaves of the coriander plant.

Thats normal.  Some people think cilantro leaves taste like soap (the headship and my mother as examples) but generally the seeds are not a problem.  I have no problem with cilantro leaves, we are curious to see if LO does, but as we never use it (because the headship thinks it tastes like soap) it may be a while.

Funny. I had to get used to the leaves of coriander. But I am sure that I ate dried coriander or dried coriander seeds in meals before without any problems. But fresh coriander leaves were difficult for me at first. Now I love asian meals with fresh coriander leaves in them, I even mix them in my homemade salads when I can get them in the supermarket. How old is your daughter? I think I got used to the leaves at the age of 29 ...

Chitlins are a delicacy in my culture, DD and DH love them so I will cook them once a year for them (basically, boil to infinity and change the water several times). Although at one time chitlins were throw-away food, they are expensive now! I grew up around them, my mother ate them but never forced me too, and to this day I have never eaten them and will not. Watching Andrew Zimmern showed me that chitlins are eaten aroud the planet. I refuse to use the pretentious but correct spelling "chitterlings".

Cilantro? Nope, tastes like funny lettuce to me. Coriander is a big nope too. Lamb? No, tastes like funny beef to me. Okra in succotash is very good. I come from a Black southern food tradition. Although I was born and raised in the north, grits, greens (including turnip bottoms whch are wonderful), and other "soul" food dishes were standard fare.

So things I learned this week :

1- chitterlings and chitlins are the same thing ( I’ve never had either )

2- these are totally different than chicharonnes  ( fried  pork skin - which I like ) this is what I originally thought when I did an image search for chitterlings.

3-autocorrect does not understand, or like, the word chicharonnes

4- cilantro is the leaves from coriander- which explains a lot.

5- I continue to be awestruck by people who navigate all this when English isn’t their first language !

I have always loved fried pork skin. Cilantro,  only in small doses.

Lol, I used to use wet jellybeans as lipstick when I was little.

After the sharpie makeup fiasco, that is.

My rule is I'll try anything once, no matter how it looks.

The only thing I physically can't stomach is peanut butter. Even the smell alone is enough to make me gag. To this day I've never even managed to get a tablespoon of the stuff down without throwing up.

The Duggars just posted this for J and D’s anniversaty. Looks like Derick grabbed Jill as well at Joy’s wedding. From the tv footage it looked like Bobby had walked her but I guess he only helped her down the stairs of the altar.

Derick can’t stand to see her with other men, even if it’s for a 2 second walk st her sister’s wedding. He’s so controlling

I seriously don't understand why they do that? Isn't it considered rude? What is the issue with walking with the groomsman.... he's just an escort

I’m sorry I have no idea why, but my post was reposted.

Anyway, I just don’t get Derrick. Is he that insecure?

I remember at Jinger’s wedding he took Jill so aggressively and kissed her in a super possessive way. The groomsman, James (Jeremy’s Friend) had such a wtf look on his face.

@Scrabbelmaster, my daughter is 33.  She's not a very picky eater, but cilantro is one of the things she can't abide.
