Joy and Austin 19: 273 Days After the Wedding Gideon Arrived

Cute baby.  Not a big fan of the name... makes me think of bibles in hotel rooms.  But better than Spurgeon or something with a super-kreativ spelling.

I'm thinking she may have had a c-section. Reasons: 1.) an extremely large baby, which is her first, 2.) a conspicuously round head (I'm no expert on newborns, but don't they usually have at least a little cone-shape going on?), 3.) the photo of him in the crib, which means the birth was most likely not at home, 4.) the delay in announcing (which could just be to coincide with the season premiere, or it could mean she was in the hospital for a few days).

Glad he's arrived safely and she didn't go way overdue!

My daughter had a cone head at birth (I actually did end up having a c-section but I pushed for a little while so I guess that's why) but her head was nice and round by the time we left the hospital two days later. It doesn't look like they took that picture right after birth so it's possible his head had just rounded out by then. I do agree that it doesn't look like she went for a home birth. Whether by choice or by necessity, remains to be seen.

Cute chunky monkey and it’s not a bad name.  It could have been natural even at that weight and they may have gone birthing center to avoid a Jill disaster.

For those of you who use the metric system and can't easily convert in your head: Gideon weighed 10 lbs. and 3 oz. which is 4.62 kg.

Holy cow!! My baby is 11 weeks and hasn't hit 10 lbs yet. My baby was born naturally but the labor and delivery went relatively quickly so she didn't have a cone head. Someone was saying a round head is suspicious like a c-section. Not necessarily.

I suggested Gideon as a possible name - I guessed Feb 24th so I was close enough. He looks like Austin in my opinion - poor kid.

Imagine giving birth to a 10lb baby...wow. Seeing this kind of thing not only makes me worry about Joy's life as a mother, but about myself in the future - my siblings and I were also born pretty large, and if genetics is anything to go by, future children will be too. If I'm destined to have a bunch of 10 pounders then I'm getting my tubes tied.

So am I the only one with this song stuck in my head on a loop now?

No, you are not! Love that song and it was the first thing I thought of when I read the name.

Yeah, he'll be a patriarch, but if the Duggars keep having boys first they might not be able to use sister moms and the number of kids overall might go down... or the bough will break sooner and they'll leave...

One can hope.

I have severe allergies and asthma. It rarely is a problem, so the medication is not very expensive normally. The problem is, I'm not entirely aware of what exactly all of my allergens ARE, and they can turn severe on a dime. I mean facial swelling, wheezing, anaphylaxis, horrific skin issues. Uninsured, an ambulance ride and EpiPen/emergency treatment would ruin and bankrupt me to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars. And that would be every time it happened! So I'd probably decide to take my own chances and risk my life and health.

Just wanted to throw out there...have you looked into Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)?  Several members of my family have it - sounds a lot like what you're describing.

Well. He will have a lot  of Bibles in his life and will probably be the one who eagerly puts them in your hotel drawers so you can feel guilty for ordering porn to your room or drinking a beer.

Really? Cause she said the world would be better off if that poster weren't in it, sort of implying that she wished the poster were dead? She also assumed the poster was Christian and supported G.W. Bush even though that poster never mentioned either of those things.

I understand people losing their cool sometimes on certain issues, but when someone blows a gasket on a discussion forum once a week, creates broad stereotypes out of posters they disagree with, and their best reply to any point they disagree with is "FUCK YOU"... I mean, maybe it's on them.

I'm really embarrassed that that reply has so many up votes. I also really wish that people on the left understood that doing this undermines their efforts and is as inexcusable as when conservatives do it. We have just as much of a responsibility to be able to engage in civil disagreements and support our points with logic and facts as the right does. I'm discovering more and more on the Internet that, unfortunately, it's not just Trump supporters who live in self-created bubbles and don't have the self-discipline for intelligent debate.

They can just use Josie and the Lost Girls as auntie-moms, which I’m sure is already happening.

@nausicaa agree with everything you said. And while I seem to have mostly opposite political sensibilities what @tabitha2described IS in fact hypocrisy. I understand trying to explain the reasoning behind it, but it’s hypocrisy nonetheless.

Trying to explain it away as something else seems to devalue our argument more than hers.

Biblical, I think. And I’m beginning to wonder with all these big babies if the Duggar women struggle with gestational diabetes. I hope they’re getting the prenatal care that would tell them, or that the babies are just big, but it does worry me given their track record.

Welcome to the world, Gideon. Sorry about the family you were born into.

Does this apply to the celebrities that threatened to leave if Obama was elected and didn’t as well? I mean, if we’re being fair, they should leave first because they’re way behind.

Sorry I still haven't figured out snipping lol

Some families just have big babies, my sister and I have 5 between us. They weighed in at

9lb

2 of them weighed 9lb 5oz

9lb 12.5oz and

10lb 2oz.

I had the 10pounder and he was a natural delivery with a little gas and air, delivered 2hrs after I arrived at the hospital. Neither of us had gestational diabetes, although we both had the good sense to be tested and/or follow medical advice.

She does look pathetically young in that photo.

I agree and she is young. Wait until we see Kendra holding her baby! Another child having a child.

I will say, I do like the name Gideon. I always have.

Oh for sure! And I really hope this is the case with the Duggars!

It just converns me that with their flippant attitude towards proper medical care/precautions, that there are complications going undiagnosed...which is just so dangerous for both Mom and baby. I HOPE that they’re getting tested and they just make big babies, but when it comes to the Duggars and pregnancy-related decisions, you can’t always trust them to make the correct ones.

So on the new TLC video (which was filmed sometime before the baby came) Joy talks about setting up the pool and guest beds so it does look like they planned a homebirth at first

Since Counting On is so far behind, they can probably air his birth and courtship at the same time.

I'm waiting for a couple to have their second child before their wedding airs, as far behind as they are.

No offense taken. I’m really tired today (what’s new? I’m always tired), so I probably didn’t read as carefully as I should have.

I’ll rephrase my other post if that’s ok - I think it’s understandable that such a highly charged subject like maternity leave or healthcare would elicit some pretty emotional responses. In my personal opinion, the poster she was responding to has a very limited point of view and I don’t agree with her at all. At the same time, I agree with your assessment that her response was, at points, out of line. It sounds as if that poster has been through a great deal of hardship, but I don’t think making assumptions or possibly wishing someone dead is ok either.

Thanks for making me rethink! :)

As for the rest of your post, I think you make a good point. People of all political persuasions are capable of jumping to unwarranted conclusions, making rash judgements, and being assholes (looking at you Bill Maher.) I’ve certainly been guilty of that myself. I think it’d take the patience of a Saint not to lose your cool completely at least once in this political climate though. So I guess all anyone can do is try their best to remain calm during discussions, forgive themselves when they aren’t quite able to, and learn from it.

ETA: Ugh. I should have listed, “Apologize if needed,” at the end of that. I really need a nap.

My daughter had a cone head at birth SNIP

The first thing I said when I saw my baby was, "Holy conehead!" I thought she was going to look like a tiny Jane Curtain for weeks, if not months. I was shocked that her head basically went back to normal in a matter of hours. My cousin, on the other hand, had a scheduled C-section and that kid had a conehead and still does 9 years later! You just never know so I try (as hard as it is) not to assume anything. I would think that baby Gideon being so dang big would result in a C-section, but Spurgeon was huge and also Jessa's first and a vaginal birth so who knows!

Honestly, I should probably just MOVE ALONG at this point but every fiber of my adamant being is telling me to just say two final comments regarding the subject:

1. People are allowed to want to move anywhere for any reason... the same people are also allowed to move or not move for any reason, without criticism.

2. Comparing the Hollywood elite to your average U.S. citizen is the most nonsense thing I’ve ever heard.

Im sorry, I’m done, yay for Joy having a baby boy (I guess?)!!!!!!

I genuinely don’t understand this line of reasoning. I think that words matter. Proclamations matter. So when someone in the public eye, whatever side of the aisle, says they will do something....then in fact doesn’t do it....that’s...what? A good thing?

i also think one of the main points of this forum is that people are not, in fact, allowed to just do things “without criticism.” That’s dangerous and does no good for anyone. I think the heated language and opposite political ideas are clouding our judgement a bit but I’ll leave with a quote by someone who was far more eloquent than I’m able to be right now.

“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.” -Christopher Hitchens

@Georgiana exactly. My sister is less than 5ft tall and very thin, she was tested for gestational diabetes in both pregnancies and after a long labour and emergency section with her first she followed medical advice and had an elective section for baby 2. I'm taller and I have a bigger frame, after a 9lb first baby at 19 they were happy that I just had big babies. But I still followed medical advice when I was discouraged from having a home birth with baby 3 because of their size.

The worry is that gestational diabetes and other pregnancy/labour related issues can have much worse outcomes than a chubby baby.

Do they take their home birth babies in for a new born exams? Even a routine Apgar score? I'm okay with a home birth when attended by a certijfed nurse mid wife, I just don't trust them to follow up with proper newborn care.
