Jessa Duggar Seewald is Pregnant - Part 3

I'm guessing that it wouldn't exactly be legal for Jill to deliver Jessa's baby since she her apprenticeship license thing was yanked by the state.

Then again, the Duggars seem to consider pesky things like laws to be more of guidelines. . .

Did anyone else read the last part of that in Captain Barbossa's voice?

Anyone else think it's weird she tagged the sonogram pic "first ultrasound"? At 19 weeks 3 days she should be on her 3rd ultrasound. The first is at 8 or 9 weeks to confirm baby's heartbeat, the second is at 12 or 13 weeks as part of down syndrome testing, and the third is around 20 weeks where they check for any abnormalities and tell you the gender if you want to know. Is Jessa not getting proper pre natal care? Maybe because she doesn't have health insurance? It's just weird to me that she isn't following standard prenatal care protocol when it comes to ultrasounds. Or, she has had two other ones and is just lying about this being her first.

EDIT for riffles

I'm not a fan of this breed of speculation. I respect your opinion and I see your reasoning (i.e. that Jessa is a bit backwards and stubborn) but the Duggars have a very tangible track record of getting needed medical care. Sure they push the limits (Jchelle with her high-risk specialist and Jill with her delayed hospital birth) but they aren't neglecting their fetuses.

I won't touch that vaccination mess with a ten foot poll.

I will say, however, as a mom to an Aspie (my 21 y.o. DS) and a severely autistic (my 20 y.o. DD) that my experiences with ultrasound was opposite of what has been talked about.

With DS, I had 10 ultrasounds, with DD, I only had 1. With my other 2 neurotypical kids, I had the average 2 or 3. For over 20 years now I have read reports that range from sane and sensible, to outside the box, to some downright crazy shit. I even got to experience the nasty looks of a few DRs who questioned my parenting or lack of affection to my children. Twenty years ago, there was still a decent amount of "specialists" who blamed the mother.

I don't know that I have anymore answers today for the question of WHY? But I think that the current generation is receiving the best therapies that kids on the spectrum have ever gotten. I sometimes think that they were throwing stuff at the walls to see what would stick in terms of therapy.

Just some words from a Mom of autism " vets".

(When my kids were little, people didn't know what autism was. They always thought they were "like Rainman" )

I only had one scan each during the pregnancies of my eldest and second son. Both have been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. I had multiple scans when I was pregnant with my youngest. He's neurotypical.

Soooooo.... going by our experiences, scans seem to prevent autism....

Very true. The Duggars are pretty well-documented at getting medical care. Hell, half their show revolved around doctor and dental visits. I doubt that Jessa is doing nothing. It's just another example of taking things that are just a small snapshot of their lives, and making blanket statements about them based off of one picture or statement. If she posted pictures and updates of every single doctor/midwife visit, there'd be posts slamming her as an attention whore like Jill. I swear they can't win

It's possible the provider she has selected does not want to be filmed.

What a perfect selection for someone like Jessa.

Here's Baby Seewald,,, she's now 3 mos old covered with a blanket

Here's toddler Seewald...she's now 3 years old and wearing a floppy hat and sunglasses.

What's her name?

Jessa: We've decided not to share that detail.

MAYBE Jessa didn't get the early ultrasounds because she doesn't intend to do anything, even IF the child is "flawed" in some way. Pro life also means "take what you get". So if she wasn't going to have an abortion, why get the early US?

At the initial u/s around 6-7 weeks they check for heartbeat. Then they do the Nuchal Translucency screening between 11-14 weeks which is combined with blood work to check for a variety of things, not just chromosonal disorders.

When I was pregnant with my son, 18 years ago, I only had one ultrasound, which took place perhaps around 8 to 9 weeks. I was considered an older mom, pregnant at 35. Even with that label, Kaiser didn't seem to think any more ultra sounds were necessary. My pregnancy was smooth and easy, which is probably why they didn't recommend more ultrasounds. Or maybe in the past 18 years, things have changed and now expectant moms have multiple ultrasounds. IDK.

Oh, man, I had loads and loads of US (kid'll be two late this summer). First, I had a trans-vaginal about 6 or 7 weeks, then a regular one a week later at a different practice (I was shopping between two different practices/hospitals). Then the 12w, then the 20w anatomy, and a couple more after that due to 1) getting in a car accident at 33w, 2)gestational diabetes, 3) "advanced maternal age," and 4) a cyst on one of my ovaries that they were keeping an eye on. I can't remember exactly how many there were after the 20w one, but two or three, I think. Not to mention twice-weekly non-stress tests for most of the third trimester because of the diabetes. Yikes!

18 years ago I had one ultrasound, at 20 weeks. This was not in the sticks, it was in a major city. I think at the time this was the only routine one

15 years ago, I got three - that routine one and one early on b/c I was bleeding and one right at the end because they suspected a breech (and he was). Neither of that was an issue the first time around.

I am 25 weeks pregnant today with my first child, and so far I've had 3 ultrasounds. The first one was for heartbeat. The second was for the nuchal chromosomal test. And the third one was the anatomy scan. I'm not expecting any more anytime soon and I have been assured that that's normal. So my guess is if you're healthy, with a low risk pregnancy, three or less is A-OK

Makes me think of Michael Jackson and his kids when they were little.

Hopefully she won't decide its a good idea to show off the spawn by dangling him/her from a balcony!

I am 14 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and have had 3 ultrasounds so far. I think I had 6 or 7 with my daughter 2 1/2 years ago. But every doctor is different, every insurance plan is different, every situation is different, every patient is different, and so every pregnancy will have a different amount of ultrasounds - I think we can all agree on that.

Now all the pictures of them are going to start flooding the internet again. There are still plenty of people who are actually interested. :angry-banghead: I remember when none of them had any social media accounts. I don't know how they can still claim to be modest when they are posting selfies of themselves all over the place all the time.

The early ultrasounds are definitely more on the pointless side for a pro-life person. I skipped all of that testing and whatnot because it wouldn't change anything for me either. But I am still hoping she gets the 20(ish) week anatomy scan.

Most people I know get ALL scans offered to them just because they want to see the baby. And I totally understand that. I liked getting the not-so-clear ultrasounds in office because it was fun to see. But I wasn't about to go and get a bunch of extra testing and scans for no reason ($$$.)

now this intrigues me - when did they all get social media - within the past three years :D

maybe they realized that having social media accounts made them seem more accessible even though Jessa claims to not care about her "fans"

yeah right Jessa - your fans are what your hubby employed :D

there is something about Jessa that she likes to be elusive and different

makes her feel more important :D when in reality she just comes across as indifferent :D

That is considered a "routine screening?" Weird. Definitely wasn't routine with my doctor. They gave me info on it and asked if I was interested. I asked my doctor what he would recommend. He told me that the tests aren't super accurate. Often giving false positives and negatives. If people get a positive, they often get an amniocentesis done. I said I would never be comfortable getting one of those. And I would never abort. He said he never "pushes" any of these types of tests on women, even if they are advanced maternal age. So it was really up to me. But he said based on my thoughts expressed, the tests would be pretty pointless. And many things that may need attention after birth would show up at the 20 week scan. I hope to have another child some day and I will be over 35...I will still skip those tests.

Checking for a heartbeat at 6-7 weeks seems weird to me since it often can't be detected that early.

In Duggarville, there is no such thing as autism. Any "odd" behavior would be attributed to the ebil influence of the Debil... and everyone knows the afflicted person only needs to repent and pray and everything will be alright again!

According to my OB, yes those are routine screenings. I tried to get the info from ACOG.org but the site is currently down (of course).

There's this though:

Edit to add: Of course, as the mama-to-be you have every right to refuse any test you feel unnecessary or potentially dangerous.

Ultrasounds here are considered routine, but they're also covered by MSP. On an ultrasound you catch things like placenta previa. Also if you're having twins they're extremely important.

Are ultrasounds expensive in the US? I mean, you can have a perfectly healthy pregnancy without one. They aren't mandatory. But they are part of routine care. Are they not in the US?

Do we have no sonographers on FJ?
