He's created and is currently expanding his empire of church, church school, seminary, publishing company in Moscow, ID.

Even Doug Wilson won't live forever, despite what his leghumpers seem to believe.

Who will take over the cult when Wilson dies? N.D. Wilson? These cults usually tend to be patriarchal family businesses. Doug inherited the CREC cult from *his* father

she's got some comments from labels asking her to collab as a brand ambassador.  I wonder how legit such comments are.  I don't really know instagram.  Maybe they're just bots spamming offers?  Hmm, the previous post has one from a glasses brand.  These sorts of comments are probably pretty common across instagram, I'm guessing.

Yeah, those particular comments are basically just scams. It's not unheard of to get offers when you're at 10k followers (I think the term is "micro-influencer"), but it's fairly small potatoes in terms of IG numbers, so you're not going to attract too much. Of course, a LOT of "influencers" buy their followers (usually just bots and hijacked accounts), whereas I think pretty much all of Faith's followers are legitimate. That might be worth something, at least if your product was something you wanted to promote among the vintage cosplay scene.

Faith has close to 10,000 followers on Instagram, but Sewing Treble Shop only has 7 followers and two items, so it seems she not monetizing her talent, at least not via Insta.  Does she have an Etsy shop or EBay?

She does restoration work for Two Old Beans, Ellen Vernier and Jessica Courter's online vintage shop, but her own Etsy doesn't seem to be a seller account. She occasionally sells off her old clothes on Instagram stories (from her primary account), but those seem like mostly vintage finds, not her own handmade stuff.

Scotch and Cigars? I knew VF counted themselves as cultured and shit, but drinking and smoking was ok with them?
And who has got this “back porch”  as I doubt it is at the apartment Beall and the kids live in ?

I missed the photo, but I'm gonna guess and say it might have been taken at the Turleys? They live in the same part of Tennessee as JT and Justice, socialize with them a ton, and I think they have a good sized deck (if it's the deck/yard I'm thinking of). I don't know what Justice's place looks like, but I'm pretty sure JT and Delaney are in an apartment.

My running theory is that Beall and Doug basically can't stand to be under the same roof, and lived apart (Doug in Texas, at least when he was in the US, and Beall in Colorado) for a couple of years. Doug hanging out in Tennessee with JT and Justice actually fits in that theory well, because I think he's largely run out of money, and I cannot for the life of me imagine him riding out quarantine cooped up with Beall. Plus Faith hopped a plane to Tennessee almost the instant Texas relaxed Covid restrictions, which makes more sense if Doug was there.

And yeah, they're big on the whole cigar thing. It's a "tradition" between Doug & sons, especially. If you go back far enough in JT's Instagram (it's public at the moment) you'll find a post or two about it.

I think they actually do idolize Hemingway, I know JT has posted to that effect. I guess the toxic masculinity trumps any conflict with the Phillips' theological beliefs (if they even have those, anymore).

Yup, Ellen is Audri's sister. She was also on the cover of the Botkinette's "It's Not That Complicated" (she has darker hair now, but was blonde at the time) back in the day. They have a younger sister, Natasha, who married one of the Courter sons.

This makes sense and also explains the frenetic pace of white supremacist & pro-Confederacy posts on the VF FB page. Doug has plenty of time these days for shoveling out this shite.

Also, from what I can tell, Doug & Beall run that FB page. It doesn't seem that any former VF minions are involved though many of them doubtless share those beliefs. For that matter, Beall's recent posts on her public IG account suggest she thinks the same things.

I wonder if he’s staying In Tennessee with the Botkins. That might explain Audri and Ben leaving The compound, and why Audri’s Twitter feed Is full of posts about spiritual abuse. Doug and Geoff were all about that manly friendship back in the day. I bet that if Doug came to him with tears and remorse about how that harlot trapped him and he lost his great empire Geoff would welcome him back with open arms.

I tend to doubt it, I think the post Tool O' Ween fallout between Doug and Geoff was petty final. In fact I think it's sort of the opposite with Ben and Audri. The only public Botkin/Phillips interaction I've ever noticed was when Ben congratulated JT on the birth of  his son, and Audri popping up in Faith's IG comments from time to time. I don't know that they necessarily support Doug (I saw that Audri was on the followers list for one of Lourdes Torres' IG accounts not too long ago), but they seem to be the most open to maintaining their relationships with Doug's adult kids.

I think someone here also mentioned a sort of schism between the Botkins and the Vernier/Courter contingent several years back. The Botkins even stopped participating in the big WWII cosplay fest in Linden, Tn., that all three families had previously been very involved in.

Audri seems like she's on good terms with her family, so they've probably shifted over to that side of the fence, which I'm sure fills Geoff with white-hot impotent rage that one of his offspring is isn't under is total control.

I'd be surprised if Geoff would let Dougie couch surf for anything more than a long weekend. After all, there are two maiden ladies still living in the household -- why would any patriarch worth his pillar of salt allow Doug Phillips Is A Rapist Tool any where near them?

Re: Audri's & Ben's departure. I'd guess that the comments on spiritual abuse are directed at Geoff and his cult. It must be a relief to be out of his clutches and not have to listen to endless sermons on death.

Yeah, listening to him would be insufferable.  So glad that Ben broke out of the Botkin bubble to become (hopefully) his own man.

Does anyone know anything about John Thompson? He used to speak at Doug's conferences etc and then just suddenly stopped, supposedly he's the original founder of the National Center for Family Integrated Churches (NCFIC)

Spoiler

Well, I remember reading this funny story: http://fiddlrts.blogspot.com/2014/02/my-john-thompson-story.html?m=1

Be sure to read down the the bit about Thompson's daughter's one-woman-show, "Virgin to Vixen in One Night. "

The blogger has some links to other info about Thompson's beliefs. I vaguely remember him speaking at some manly man conference which may or may not have involved DPIAT, but definitely involved "strenuous hiking" and lots of theology discussions for the men and sons. I was already far away from patriarsy by then, so I don't recall more details.

So glad that my local library apparently shares my interests when it comes to recommendations for book purchases. Just got a notice that this new title is available for borrowing. I will be back with a review in due course...

In the meantime, I somehow missed this New Yorker article last fall, on the "Raising the Allosaur" debacle:

Quote

Doug Phillips, a fifty-four-year-old contractor and documentary filmmaker, was, at one time, a part of that world. He’s the son of Howard Phillips, who founded the Constitution Party and was a key figure in the rise of the religious right. For several years, Doug Phillips worked as a lawyer at the Home School Legal Defense Association, a Christian nonprofit that lobbies for homeschool-friendly legislation and provides legal support to homeschooling families. In 1998, he founded Vision Forum Ministries, best known for its insistence on Biblical patriarchy—a creed that holds, among other things, that “the woman was created as a helper to her husband” and that “the God-ordained and proper sphere of dominion for a wife is the household.” Phillips also maintained a commercial offshoot of the ministry, Vision Forum, Inc., which sold books and other materials to Christian consumers.

Lots of great reading ahead!

Yes, I was amazed that the Raising the Allosaur debacle ended up in the New Yorker, and especially, so many years after it happened.

Looking forward to your review of Jesus and John Wayne.  I've seen Unholy: Why White Evangelicals Worship at the Altar of Donald Trump  by Sarah Posner highly recommended as well.

I'd forgotten about Goodreads as a source of reviews, so here ya go:

Gee Doug, you seem awfully invested in the defense of a man accused of taking sexual advantage of a woman of color, living in his home, over whom he had undue influence.

I wonder why that is :pb_confused:

Leads me to wonder if there was an incident where Audri said things to Geoff, like clarifying that she's not a lesser being or she wasn't sufficiently supportive and adoring towards a Botkin dick holder.  Or *gasp!* encouraged a Botkinette to be more than a Geoff-worshiping human door mat in the enmeshed Botkin family structure.

@AnnaSofia, DPIARBT isn’t going to let that pesky DNA evidence get in the way of profiting* Godly Patriarchy!

*I meant to type “promoting,” but it got autocorrected to “profiting,” so I’m letting it stand!

Doug's idea of history: shitty scholarship by frauds who wrap their white supremacy in Christianity and cosplay.

She probably had no idea what she was getting into when she moved to live on the compound. Her “courtship” with Ben was long distance, with the exception of one week that she went to Tennessee to stay with the Botkins. It can’t have been easy to go from family in a big city to such an isolated life, all other circumstances aside.

I feel for her a lot. How scary must it have been to be wrapped up in that small world, with no real outsiders around you. Whom would you go to for help outside of the church and your in-laws?

Agree. Her own family, despite swilling the VF kool-aid for a time, seemed pretty reasonable.

Well last year he read Crossed Fingers: How the Liberals Captured the Presbyterian Church by Gary North ;)

Let's just say that the reason I know who Doug Philips is, is that my dad thought Into the Amazon was a good Christmas gift for my brothers.

I had to google that.  I think your thoughtful choice will be an "interesting" read for him!

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?
