culinary fruit does not belong with your meat! that is dessert not a veggie replacement *hyperventilates* I do cry inside every time someone tries to serve me applesauce instead of vegetables. And yes I eat all my starch and meat first before I start on my apple dessert :P I do allow exceptions like pineapple in sweet and sour, and lemon chicken.

@polecat iirc it was someone else who wrote the blog (and that comment) not Lori

Ah, but there's a medical reason to serve applesauce along with meat (not as a veggie substitute, though). It helps with digestion. My mom always served applesauce when she made pork, for that reason. Sauerkraut, too. (And nowadays people eat sauerkraut on purpose for the probiotics, and not out of habit or culture or because they like the salty tang. Fancy that!)

I remember eating myself sick at an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet in the 80s. (I love seafood, it was very very expensive, I truly ate all I could, definitely gluttony.) As we were paying at the end, the host told us to be sure to take an apple from the barrel in the entryway. We'd noticed that as we came in, thought it was just a nice design feature. He said, no, the apple would help the overstuffed feeling.

Even though I thought I'd lose my dinner if I ate another bite, he was right. The apple did something to settle my stomach and relieve the over-full feeling.

ETA: My kid with the tricky digestion eats applesauce with every meat-based meal. It's the only way she can avoid being nauseous after eating meat. Since meat and seafood (plain white fish) are the only proteins she can tolerate, it's a matter of necessity in her case.

Here is her post:

Concerning the illegal immigration problem, I know some of these illegal immigrants. They were raised with dirt floors, no shoes, and no good water. They came to America for a better life for their children. Many of them are sending money home to their families who are living on barely next to nothing. If you lived within hours of a big rich country that you could easily sneak into, you would probably sneak into it as well. It's not the illegal immigrants problem. It's our country's problem for not securing the border. We shouldn't take it out on the illegal immigrants who are just searching for a better place for their children. When 17 million or so illegal immigrants can easily come into our country, it's the country's fault more than the illegal immigrants. Be angry with our government, not the illegal immigrants.

A commenter says this:

Quote

Why is it ok for someone here illegally to stay? They have committed a crime for 25 years. They came illegally and knowingly and instead of correcting it chose to go on and continue. I have a hard time with allowing illegals who knowingly broke our laws stay...when law abiding naturalized citizens get a slap in the face for following the law. Just because an administration doesnt choose to enforce control that doesnt take the law off the books.

Lori's reply has dropped my jaw:

Quote

It's called having mercy on the downtrodden

Notice her solution, though. The solution is to build a higher wall, or something.

I still disagree with her. I'm pretty sure that Jesus wouldn't say to build a wall to keep out the hungry children. He would be saying to stop worry about walls and feed all who are in need.

Heck, my kids could cook a full meal by the time they were 14 or so (boys, so don't yell).

I saw somewhere on the internet that said, "Women belong in the kitchen. Men belong in the kitchen. Everyone belongs in the kitchen, because that's where the food is!" Honestly, cooking is something that everyone should know how to do, and good on ya for teaching your kids how!

That is one thing that some of the convenanters seem to believe (not all, probably) but I see a lot of posts about caring for the stranger in your lands, etc.... it is odd, given many of their other beliefs.

Being the lazy beyatch I am...I try to make life as easy as possible for myself. When we go grocery shopping I'll buy pork roasts and maybe a couple cuts of beef. When I get home, I'll either cut them up in chunks or slivers. They go in freezer bags and that's the end of that. Takes me about an hour to prep all the meats.

Since its just the two of us now, I'm all about quick and easy. I can throw together a meal in 30 minutes or less using REAL ingredients...meat, starch, veggie or fruit. Lori is about a stupid bitch.

You know, pork shoulder (Boston butt, bone-in or boneless) crockpots WONDERFULLY, even from frozen, with a little pork rub and a dash of water, plus a spoonful or two of hot salsa---or, if you prefer, with a sliced onion and maybe a can of tomatoes. After 12-16 hours (for a BIG hunk, started frozen), your kitchen will smell heavenly, and all that nice juice available for freezing leftovers or serving with bread, mashed potatoes, or rice.

Another thought. Lori is quoted as saying,

Concerning the illegal immigration problem, I know some of these illegal immigrants.

Y'know, that's one of the problems with fundies. They are self-isolating, so people who don't share their beliefs aren't real to them, and they'll believe whatever claptrap propaganda the guy standing up front teaching them is spewing. (Or woman... in the case of that Gwen somebody, the Weigh Down Workshops woman, who founded her own cult. Was just reminded of her the other day, by someone with a kid and grandkids trapped in that cult.)

So gays are eevul. So are tattooed/pierced people with odd-colored hair. They're probably all drug users. And they're out to seduce/recruit your children.

And the children who get kicked out find out that those other "outcasts" are way more caring than the so-called church. Or at least, that's been the experience of a lot of the "lost" kids I know.

ETA: Anyhow, Lori "knows" some illegal immigrants. All of a sudden, they've transformed from a mental, ideological construct, to real, relatable people.

Lori is afraid the cost of her yard service is going to sky-rocket if illegals are deported.

Just my guess.

I dump a pork roast in the crockpot w/bbq sauce and let it do its thing all day...pork BBQ is big with us...I usually use my crock pot to make beans...I mix black beans, red beans and garbanzos together (after soaking all night), dump 'em in the crock with chicken broth (or water and bullion), salsa, chopped onion and sazon (latino seasoned salt) and let it do its thing all day. Serve over rice. Quick, easy and CHEAP dinner.

@samira_catlover, I'm one of the evil working moms who does vegetable prep on Sunday, when I bring home groceries.  It's more time consuming in the summer, because that's when we have all the yummy fruit, but that's maybe an hour.  (Plus, as you said, you can chat with people while they steal the stuff you're cutting up, or maybe that's just my girl...)

@OnceUponATime, my parents were also of the "applesauce goes with pork chops" school.  Especially with small people, applesauce goes with A LOT.

I once read that cooking beans in a crock pot is dangerous (iirc the temperature is too low so it produces too much of a certain chemical). And then I see everyone making beans in a crock pot and wonder if that is just lies?
I have been informed that crock pot buying must wait until the new kitchen has been put in (in 3+ years). Or until we have more cupboards.

Lori has actually surprised me. She has posted about illegal immigration on her Facebook page, and she does not bash the immigrants. She has been arguing with some of her fans about who to hold accountable for the immigration problem. It is the first time I have seen he show an ounce of compassion for other people's experiences.

I just read it, and I have to say, I was shocked.

Lori should really focus her energies on being the person she sounded like when she wrote that post.  I think it may be the first time that it's seemed she gave a damn about anyone but herself.

I think what you're referring to is phytohemaglutinin (PHA) which can cause allergic reactions in some people who eat red kidney beans (actual scientific data).  Apparently if you boil your beans for 10 mins before putting them in the crock-pot you'll be fine (no actual scientific data).  Other beans are OK and it's only a problem if you're allergic.

As long as you soak them and boil them before popping them in the crockpot, you should be good. :)

Lori is an idiot. There are scads of cookbooks (at least one written by Jacques Pepin) for 30-minute dinners. Things like fish, chicken fillets, and stir-fries take very little time.

I'm going go with this guess too. Also, she might know some illegals through the former nanny/housekeeper. I'll admit I have mixed views on illegal immigration and part of that stems from the fact that my relative's identity was stolen and her credit was wrecked by illegal immigrant. I know not all illegal immigrants are bad, but I have to wonder if Lori's tune would be different if she had been negatively effected by illegal immigrant.

Reader:

Well in my humble opinion, if it takes you several hours to cook dinner, something has gone terribly wrong in the kitchen.

I actually cook a big, multi-course meal every Friday night, and always have guests that night....but it still doesn't take several hours.  I've got it down to a science now:  Make chicken stock in crock pot ahead of time (10 min.)  Defrost chicken and frozen unbaked challah loaves in the fridge overnight.  Put the loaves on a baking pan and stick in the cold oven to rise while I'm at work.  Corned beef in the slow cooker.  Do carpool and go to work.  20 min. to run into Costco for fresh fruit, veggies and salmon fillet.  Stick chicken in the oven (5 min.) and do carpool.  Make matzo balls, stick in fridge for 15 min.  Do egg wash in the challah, stick in oven for 35 min.  Mix hoisin and sweet chili thai sauce together and spread over salmon, stick in oven (5 min.).  Boil some water with onion salt, roll matzo balls (5-10 min.) and simmer for 30 min.  Steam veggies. (10 min.)  Make a homemade bean dip (5 min).  Put rice in rice cooker (2 min).  Make guacamole (1 min.)  Get Girl 1 to bake a cookie pie, The Boy to make a cucumber and tomato salad, and Hubby to cut a fruit salad.  Girl #2 sets the table, with some help from siblings.

Yesterday was awkward. In the (now edited) post Lori said something about her readers probably having lots of questions.  There were 5 replies.  2 from Ken, 2 from Lori, 1 from another reader.  But is was basically just Lori and Ken talking to each other.  :pb_confused:

There probably were questions, but they were probably questioning her so she sat on the delete button.
