Duggars By the Dozen - General Discussion - Part 12

I really do not agree. TLC helped create the environment where children are not educated, kept in home and largely neglected. Without TLC, the kids would have had more options for education and employment because they couldn't have stayed in the 3 bedroom borrowed home or sleep in tents under the roof structure of TTH. The older children would have been forced to explore more options, if only because Jim Bob would have put them to work early. They would have ended up more like the Bates, probably, who needed their children to gain some independence or the whole family suffers.

People like the Duggars complain that socialism kills ambition. Well, so does TLC. Without the structures of child labor laws, that reality TV so nefariously ignores, then yes, TLC owes all of the children of it's reality shows. TLC pays for a constant and consistent product. Keeping the Duggars Duggars was entirely their aim, which was NOT good for those kids.

It would be interesting to see a class action suit brought by all the children of TLC's reality programming. Those Gosselin kids in particular could join up, especially now that Pennsylvania has signed new child labor laws in reaction to their old show. The kids have no choice, mom and dad are greedy/lazy, and TLC is reaping huge rewards from an abusive system TLC basically invented.

What would TLC have to gain from suing them? Recouping some of the last seven years' worth of money from salaries and trips and whatever money they put toward their house(s). Saving face. Making an example of them after the issues they've had with reality shows and sacandal. Appeasing investors and/or the sister networks. Does anyone really think that Oprah is okay with being associated with this family through the parent network and is okay with just letting Discovery/TLC do what it wants to do?

Uh, no. Get with the program, lostfemme. Gothardism, not TLC, created the system where children are not educated, kept at home, and, due to sheer numbers, neglected. TLC merely featured the Duggars as part of the line up of freak shows. The Duggars signed up happily because it was their "ministry" and they needed the cash. The Duggar parents signed a deal with the devil, especially when they should never have signed or publicized their family with Josh's molestation in the background.

Evenkeel wrote:

I can think of any number of reasons why TLC would sue the Duggars for breach of contract. There was a written agreeement about the amount of money paid to them and how it was to be distributed. JB didn't follow it, and the girls went to TLC to make it right. JB lied about the molestation(either outright denied it or minimized it) and there was a clause in the contract regarding lying about anything that might damage TLC/Discovery Communication's image. It could be an exclusivity clause between them and People or TLC and doing the interviews with Faux News broke it. Maybe TLC got upset about the bad light that the interviews put them in or not using their own PR reps per the contract, or they didn't consult TLC at all before doing the interviews and that constituted breach.

Uh, no, to the bolded. Unless you have seen the contract that is bull. You have no idea how the money was supposed to have been distributed.

I suppose TLC *might* cite a morals clause if the Duggars got difficult but not otherwise. TLC ought to be covered in humiliation for not doing proper background checks. However, TLC historically doesn't care about those petty details. Neither do many other UnReality shows. See Married at First Sight recently.

Also, may I remind you that the "Coogan law" does not apply to AR or most of the USA. The rest of what you said is also in fantasy land. Who knows what the contract said - unless you have seen the contract.

This sort of discussion really bugs me because it is also very clear to those of us who have kept an eye on children victimized by UnReality TV for many years that the general public is still horribly ignorant. Could all UnReality TV kids have a case? Morally, yes. In practice, I doubt they would win.

There is no Federal law to protect children in entertainment. There are only a few state specific laws to protect children in UnReality TV. TLC and other UnReality TV productions have found loopholes in existing laws, dodge existing laws, move states, take advantage of parents desperate for money, and FUCK CHILDREN OVER, time and time again.

I certainly agree that children do not belong on UnReality TV. I also ask you (general you), yet again, to check out A Minor Consideration. http://www.minorcon.org

There is no doubt that 19 Kids and Counting has been an enormous money maker for TLC. I think TLC is contemplating the continuation of the Duggar show and watching public opinion hard. Spin-off, perhaps. But I doubt that it will work because Jill and Jessa = boring. TLC needs to drop the show fast.TLC is not going to sue the Duggars - unless the Duggars try to sue TLC. In which case, TLC will win.

(I hope I quoted people correctly. It got rather confusing.)

They could certainly file a lawsuit to appease investors (and advertisers) if they were fairly certain it would settle out of court and not be out very much money or use it as a tactic to get the Duggars to just go away with whatever TLC wants to offer. As long as the specter of a possible show or spin-off is out there then people of all ilks are going to be leery of them. Sometimes it's the principle of the thing, too, especially if the Duggars' actions not only constitute breach of contract but fraud as well. When talking about reality television we're talking about a genre of television still in its infancy and with no legal constructs to prop it up but plenty of legal questions to tear it down. Considering how high-profile this case is, it might also be worth it to TLC to be a trailblazer in the area of protecting their interests.

I do notice that you didn't address the breach of an exclusivity contract for the interviews or consulting TLC before doing the interviews, or using the PR reps that TLC employ. It could also be People suing them, not TLC, as mentioned. Do you think those are plausible reasons for them to sue, even if unlikely? The other part of it is that the Duggars could feel it worth it to have someone retained in case of lawsuit to be ahead of the game. A lawyer is not going to advise anyone on a situation as complicated as this one without a retainer or payment of some type.

The other other thought is that maybe the Duggars have just had enough and want to withdraw from the public eye completely. If they have a contract in force maybe they want to know what they're in for if they try to bow out. I wonder how much conversation has been going on between the Duggars and TLC regarding the future of the show and what the thoughts are of both sides on both wanting to keep it going (either ss is or as a spin-off) or the feasibility of doing so.

Again, it's not worth the money or the publicity to Discovery Corp to sue the Duggars. But OK how much money do you think that Discovery/TLC could get that would make it worth it to them to sue? Again not worth it to investors-- and with this big payout advertisers are supposed to get money back too? Mind you, everyone was making money while the show was on. And would JB really settle? I could see JB NOT SETTLING and appealing any judgement.

Fraud? We don't know what kinds of questions that the Duggars were asked. But let's say TLC decided to sue on fraud. What are TLC's damages? They had a hit show. Future earnings? JB doesn't have enough money to cover that, so why bother. Does TLC want to have light shed on their vetting or lack there of vetting process?

I wasn't aware that Fox interview went against People exclusivity-- I didn't realize that the People contract covered TV interviews-- did you see the contract? Didn't People write an article or two about the interview? What makes you think they didn't consult TLC? They do PR events all the time and hasn't been seen as a conflict. As for the Fox interview, I believe they showed clips from the show like the opening. That had to be cleared by TLC. You think TLC was finding out about the interview when we all did? TLC could've stopped the interview if they wanted to.

Though I was really only interested in your assertion that TLC would sue the Duggars (they won't) Your new statements re Duggars just maybe want to stop filming: considering that Jessa and Jill are still doing public speaking engagements, they don't appear to want to "bow out." I assure you that it won't come down to TLC forcing the Duggars to film.

MAD Family LLC – I did a search of the Duggar businesses a few days ago, and got the impression that this is the receiver of the paychecks from TLC. Will keep looking, because I don’t remember what I found to give me that impression.

ALL MY OWN SPECULATION!!!!11!!!!11

Jill & Jessa – I think they are playing at being loving sisters. I don’t think they like each other at all. And really it’s not surprising. I have five sisters. We do not all get along all the time. We are great people separately and in small groups, but we all have our most favorites and least favorites. When we all get together, all of the old resentments and arguments come out. The old sibling rivalries resurface. We revert to our childhood selves. Since we are grown adults, who do not live together, those things usually only come out when we are all together.

Being so isolated with your siblings, I am guessing that those kinds of feelings and issues never really go away. (I don’t think I explained it very well)

Jessa (The Angry One) – I see a lot of anger in her. She seems to have swallowed a lot of emotion/feelings/reactions, but has never let go of it. And I’m talking about their entire childhood. Here these people are told (ordered, brainwashed) to forgive and forget, but nothing really gets dealt with. Maybe Jessa is jealous of Jill. Jill did get a bigger “Wedding Season†and then overshadows Jessa’s wedding by being pregnant.

Jill (The People Pleaser) – she will never stop bathing in the Kool-Aid. Toeing the line has served her very well all her life. I hope that Derick isn’t drinking the Kool-Aid.

Speaking of Derrick – there has been a lot of speculation about the husbands’ reaction to the scandal. I think Bin knew. Remember, Jinger was B&J’s chaperone A LOT. I think the three of them talked about it. I think that Derrick may have been the more upset/blindsided by it. You do have to watch for the quiet ones, ya know!

Josiah – I watched the episode of Josiah’s “graduation†a few weeks before the scandal and just before the courting announcement. I distinctly remember Josiah saying, (when he was thanking everyone for coming) that he was going to ALERT, then was going to college. J&M looked livid in the background. It was almost like he was saying it publically as a challenge to J&M. I cannot find the clip now, but I remember that he said it once at that time and once in his TH.

After the courting announcement, my first reaction was that they were both acting. I remember thinking, “I wonder if those two worked out this “courtship†as a way of getting Josiah out of the house.†Her parents don’t seem nearly as fundie – confirmation on that anyone?

Was that a long enough first post? Edited for riffles.

Congrats. And not long before you not only stop with "my own speculation" but start throwing out speculation like it's fact

GOOD find about MAD.

Yeah I think most agree that Jill and Jessa got pushed together because of their "season of life" I always felt a little more sympathy for Derick bc suddenly he has to be BFFs with a teenager-- sorry he's 20 now. Do you think Derick ever thought, WAIT JB asked if I had a job and could support Jillymuffin whereas this teenage houseboy just cruises on in like we are equal in what bring to the Duggar family?

I think both Derick and Ben knew about Josh. If for anything else to explain all the little safeguards they have. My guess is that JB presented it to them as something to watch out for with kids during their "pre-marital counseling" I also I think it was presented this way because much like breaking up with someone in public, it changes the dynamic. If the parents talk about it as this mis-step from the lord, the girls will sit and agree, and it won't seem as bad. However, let's say Jillymuffin mentioned it alone to Derick. He could have the normal freaked out reaction which would cause Jillymuffin to cry etc etc.

Again welcome and happy first post!

In pics of them walking through the Airport, Ben is several steps behind Jessa. I wonder if Jessa and Jill get along fine, but maybe Derick and Ben are not fond of each other. Ben has not looked very happy lately in his pics, so I wonder if he did not know the situation, and he is just smart enough now to realize the impact this will have on their desired lifestyle. He doesn't look happy to me, he looks burdened. He really hasn't seemed happy since that big family episode, Digging in with the Duggars. That was pre-scandal, so it may be something else. Perhaps he does not enjoy working for JB. I don't think his unhappiness is with Jessa but something is under his skin

I'm not saying that those things are definitively in any contract that might exist. I'm saying that they could exist because they are very common clauses, and saying it in response to people who are saying categorically "it will never happen." No one knows that it won't happen with any more certainty than I know that it would. If speculation and discussion on this particular topic isn't allowed then why are we discussing the reasons that they would have retained this lawyer?

Sure Gothard created the system, but TLC paid for the freak show that allowed the Duggars to push deeper into the horrible rituals and beliefs. Without that sweet TLC money, there would be no giant home. Kids would have left and no doubt gained skills at real jobs. TLC money kept them all in that house and under Jim Bob's absolute control. With food, furniture and toiletries just showing up on their doorstep from advertisers, the kids' were mentally stunted and forced to adhere to the Gothard system in order to keep the show afloat. I mean, the Bates kids understand work and the costs of living. They are still Gothard stooges (with a portrait of Nathan Bedford Forrest in their living room wall) but their kids understand what makes a person an adult who gets no special treatment from the world (or free trips all over the place.) I think it's going to be a long time before any Duggar child wakes up in the morning without a feeling of entitlement or finds an independent job for themselves. TLC was a major component in creating the Duggar children's stagnation.

I despise what TLC has presented as programming. Their right wing bias is glaring and TLC damages children in the name of ratings. I agree that no children should be on reality TV (I might go further and say all scripted TV and advertising as well.) But that isn't going to change without a serious push back at TLC, in particular, by the children it has abused over the years to create it's programming. There will always be greedy and desperate parents like the Duggars and the Gosselins ready to pimp their kids for money. The only way to stop that is to cut off the source to channels like TLC through legal repercussions.

I think it was telling that in the Digging in with the Duggars interview Ben really did not speak at all. (Though, to be fair none of them really looked like they wanted to be there except JB). The one time he did speak, it was to defend him and Jessa not kissing at the wedding to which he said "We had the best intentions" and I thought there was a slight 'tone' to his voice. I'm guessing he and Jessa just can't 'win' vs. Derick & Jill the prized child & SIL.

I also agree that he probably doesn't like working for JB. Let's hope he does figure out a way out. I'm not a fan of Ben's dad but I sure hope that man is figuring out how to help Ben get a 'real' job.

In the interest of full disclosure, I feel the need to let it be known 1) that I'm the author of the inquisitr article posted a few pages back, and 2)FJ gave me the first inkling about the lawyer, and promted me to look into it further from there.

Just want to be clear because I don't want anyone thinking I'm here to peekaboo your chats in secret. For the record, I write about the Duggars for the same reason I started reading here once I (thanks to the scandal and mentions by other sites) learned that FJ existed - because I find fundamentalism and the Duggar family fascinating.

The whole thing is incredible to me, because less than a week after it came out, I was telling my husband that a major scandal was due for them any time -- and I was regularly checking their social media, out of both fascination and anticipation.

Personally, I was expecting it to be a book or talk show visit from one of the girls, detailing abuse similar to that of Elissa Wall. I guess I was right on several counts, but not the book part.

Anyway, that's all, I just didn't want to be here under any false pretenses.

Figure a way out? Doing all the crap was Ben figuring a way in. He rolled the dice planning on reality tv star. If this event went well, then there could be others, I'm not sure how much in demand they would actually be. I'd like to think Christians want more out of their guest speakers than young and lovin' JC.

But given where they live and there expenses, a couple speaking engagements here and there will keep them going for awhile I'm guessing.

As for Pa Seewald... he had a job set up for Ben, but not Ben +wife +baby, so I think Ben might be sticking around ol' Tontitown for awhile.

Paychecks are going to become few and far between if TLC does cut all ties with the Duggars.

Sorry Benny, should've stuck to what you knew and that living nearer YOUR parents was a better idea...

Pa Seewald had Ben doing glass replacement like he does. Nothing about the Seewalds look like they are living in poverty. I'm guessing it's a decent paying job if 60 hours a week supported 2 adults and 7 kids. The kids appear to be involved in activities which costs money. So yeah Ben should have stuck with his dad. If the job supports Pa Seewald's family it certainly would support Ben's family.

It's not like he couldn't go back and work with dad. If Ben is head of household he and Jessa could go back to Hot Springs. Or, Pa can help him set up a satellite business in Fayetteville.

They won't right away bc they aren't sure the gravy train is over ... But it's always an option.

Is Pa Seewald offering them a house to live in rent free because that's what they got now.

Ben could've/should've been doing his glass biz all along as I'd imagine being JB's bitch does offer some flexible hours. But I'm not sure how lucrative it was since he was also working in an insurance office at some point.

Could TLC sue the Duggars for anything? The only thing I can think about it the molestation but either TLC knew about it (the most likely option) or the Duggars didn't tell them. And I don't see a legal problem contract wise about not telling TLC. (morally yes! But that is a different story) Its not like TLC is law enforcement or anything.

Its certainly not unheard of to have a "morality clause" in an employment or services contract. In my experience with "public figure" contracts, a morals clause is very common. Think of pop or sports stars that lose endorsement deals after sex scandals or drunken behaviour - like Tiger Woods. This is completely conceivable in my (admittedly Australian) legal experience.

I guess I'm not understanding how you can blame TLC for the Duggars because 100's of other shows do the same exact thing. Should this be about children on reality tv? Or is this specifically demonizing TLC over the Duggar situation?

TLC is a cable channel. It is a business. A business serves to make money and UNLESS TLC knew about some abuse or some other moral/ethical issue and did not act, I think that you are scapegoating this network in a way.

The Duggars are a family. They have the right under law to home school their children. They have the right to join a cult because of freedom of religion. The Duggars chose to accept all that free stuff from sponsors and whatever help they accepted for the house, financially or other.

I don't think that we can expect a business entity to be repsonsible for the decisions that Jim Boob & M made concerning their family. Many people cannot handle fame. But it is the PEOPLE that screw things up because of fame.

I think both of them had to have known, both Derrick and Ben.

Because of the 'purity' standard of cult, if Jim Boob didn't tell them than they could divorce the girls after the marriage. He had to have told them because it was too well known within the family and within their inner circle for them not to find out.

Now, I'm sure that he said they were 'touched in their sleep', 'above their clothes' or whatever, but they had to have known. I don't think even Jim Boob would be stupid enough to think that not telling them would not backfire when they are marrying his daughters.

I don't think that the lose of the paycheck is going to affect Ben and Derrick as much as we think it will, this is why I say that.

#1 Neither of them have rent or taxes to pay for their homes. That is a major expense for most people, the biggest expense.

#2 Jim Boob WANTS these two guys under his thumb. After everything Jim Boob has done to PICK Derrick for Jill and Ben for Jessa AND KNOWING that they know have jurisdiction because of the marriage, Jim Boob is going to do what ever he has to do financially to keep them all in line. (People that are narcissistic control freaks do not relinquish control). Control of his sons-in-law is probably MORE important than money to a certain degree to Jim Boob.

#3 The first ones (in marriage or whatever is a first) set's the precedent in a family. If he let's these sons-in-law go rogue he'll never keep control of the younger ones. Joshie's marriage set the precident too.

#4 They have food (if nothing else two or four more mouths at the main house), they have clothing (ugly, but it works) and shelter.

Izzy is expensive, but otherwise they can survive on very little. Jim Boob has money stashed away, I bet quite a bit. I see Jim Boob even tightening the noose around the kids & hubbies necks with their lack of money. I think that it is good news for Jim Boob.

A question.

I read somewhere that the kids were given cars upon marriage, does anyone know if this is true? For all three or just certain ones?

Search "pillow patrol." There was another video called Duggar loses wisdom or something, not a comedy, about Josiah's wisdom tooth surgery; and a couple of other silly videos.

Josh and Jessa both put pics of JB on their instas last night--he's looking pretty haggard, imo.

I know we dissected this video in great detail, but not sure where. You might try the search function and see what you can locate.

I guess I wanted to know if they were real and if this was indeed a 'Duggar' website and Youtube feed. I really don't care about the video. per se.

Yep, that's a Duggar-approved activity for the howlers. I haven't watched the video in a long time and I'm not inclined to watch it now, but I recall the exterior is the garage/storage/pole barn and the kitchen/living room shots were filmed elsewhere and edited to look like they were part of Ben's room, which is where the bedroom footage was done. I'm pretty sure those are all howler boys in the video, but like I said, I haven't watched it recently.
