The Queen/Prince Philip

viii

Recommended Posts

I read somewhere  that the queen previously said she would retire when Philip died.

(I edited that, because I can't find it right now.)

I think some of her cousins are still alive. They’re all getting on a bit now!

I believe the Queen had a total of 31 first cousins of which only 6 are still alive.
Her mother, the Queen mother, was the 9th of 10 children of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. There are two still living first cousins from the Queen’s maternal Aunts and Uncles, a son of the 8th born - the Honorable Michael Albermarle Bowes-Lyon, and a son of the Queen mother’s youngest brother (10th born) - Sir Simon Bowes-Lyon.

The Queen’s father, King George VI, was the one of 6 children of King George V. There are 4 still living first cousins from the Queen’s paternal Uncles. Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, the son of the Queen’s Uncle Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. The children of the Queen’s Uncle Prince George, Duke of Kent are Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra, and Prince Michael of Kent. The Kents’ are also related on Phillip’s side since their mother was Prince Phillip’s first cousin Princess Marina of Greece.

It’s a shame he didn’t make 100, he was so close. Sad day for the royal family. Hopefully they’re allowed to gather together to mourn. I’m not sure what UK restrictions are at the present moment.

My understanding is that funerals are limited to 30 people, which I guess would be:

Wife: Queen (1)

Children & spouses: Charles/Camilla, Anne/Timothy, Andrew, Edward/Sophie (7)

Grandchildren & spouses: Peter, Zara/Mike, William/Kate, Harry/Meghan(?), Beatrice/Eduardo, Eugenie/Jack, Louise, James (11-13)

Niece/Nephew (Princess Margaret’s children): Sarah Chatto/spouse & David, Earl of Snowden (3)

Cousins: Gloucester/spouse, Kents/spouses (7)

I’ve left out the married ins currently divorced or divorcing so Sarah - son Andrew’s ex, Autumn - grandson Peter’s soon to be ex, & Serena - nephew David’s soon to be ex.

I assume that Grandson Harry would be able to fly to the UK & comply w/ the required 5 day test/release quarantine (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-test-to-release-for-international-travel) unfortunately, I’m not sure that pregnant Meghan will be able to accompany him.

There are 10 great grandchildren, Peter’s 2 daughters are the oldest at ages 10 & 8, Prince George and Mia Tindal are both age 7, Princess Charlotte is age 5 - so not sure if any of them would attend.

According to the latest news here in the UK there are eight members of the Royal family who have been chosen to represent them all. The Queen, Charles , Edward and William have been mentioned but no mention of Andrew or Harry. Don’t forget the Prime Minister will almost definitely be there and other representatives of the Commonwealth. I’m not sure how much family Philip had on his own side. He was very close to a woman called Penny Romsey as well.  Difficult enough to pick 30 people if you’re an ordinary member of the public. Be interesting to see who’s there next Saturday.

Penny is family, she’s the wife (maybe ex) of Philip’s 1st cousin once removed Norton, the current Lord Mountbatten. Philip was close to Penny’s daughter Lady Alexandra Hooper too. He gave her away at her wedding when her father was unable to be present.
Philip also has one surviving cousin, Lady Pamela Hicks (nee Mountbatten) the daughter of the first Lord Mountbatten (last Viceroy of India, assassinated by the IRA). Lady Pamela is a former lady in waiting to the Queen and was one of her bridesmaids.

I think it was Prince Charles rather than Phillip who escorted Lady Alexandra down the aisle at her wedding, the Queen and Phillip attended the wedding.
The Mountbattens and the Windsors have been close for multiple generations - the ties go back to Queen Victoria, although I think the youngest generation of the families aren’t as close. Louis Mountbatten basically took his nephew in after Phillip’s mother was committed to an asylum and his father absconded to the south of France w/ a mistress.

I am so sad, Phillip was my favorite Royal.  He was such a proud man, yet he devoted his life to walking behind his wife.  When we were in Scotland once, our tour guide said that Phillip was the perfect husband for Elizabeth, because he could do that yet hold his dignity and be her rock.  I read on a British website that she was "prepared, and calm", but you are never prepared for the loss of your mate.

I hope Harry feels rotten for airing his woes while his supposedly beloved grandfather was so ill.

And once when we had a private viewing of the Crown Jewels off a cruise ship, I was talking to one of the Yeomen(sp?).  I asked her about the Queen retiring, and she said that there is no provision for that in their Constitution.  Every country in the Commonwealth would have to vote on this, and by the time they all voted it might be moot.

I’m not seeing the thing about the Royal representatives, but that would make sense. Does the 30 people include the officiant(s)? I expect the Archbishop of Canterbury hasn’t flown solo in a while.

No I attended a funeral last week. It’s 30 people NOT including the celebrant, undertakers etc. Still not many when you consider the size of his family his position and the life he’s led.

That is wrong, thankfully. The official announcement this morning stated that it would be mostly family, including Harry (but no Megan as her physician won't clear her to travel given her pregnancy). Boris Johnson (the UK prime minister) has announced that he will not go so that more spots are available for family, and I would guess that no other Commonwealth heads-of-state will make the trip, both to follow Boris' lead and given the current health situation and quarantine requirements.

I did think it would be very controversial and upsetting to tell Anne she couldn't attend her father's funeral, given that she was apparently a favourite of his and she is not involved in international sex trafficking of minors. I do wonder if some of the spouses won't attend in order to allow for more family, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Penny Romsey, Patricia Hicks (a Mountbatten and Philip's cousin), and a couple of other people who are Philip's own family or very close friends.

I saw that Andrew gave a quick statement, and apparently seems to hope that Philip's death may herald his (Andrew's) return to public life. ?

I do hope his staff and family make it crystal clear to him that nobody is interested in seeing his face unless it is to give testimony to the authorities regarding all his shady activities and involvements.

Two things I find interesting in all of the media around Prince Philip's death:

1) They (media/articles) mention that the Queen's health is in great shape & only positive statements about her continued reign. But I can't help but wonder if they are going to be the couple that pass within a short time frame of each other- is this awful to think? You hear about older couples dying close together & people deeming it dying of a broken heart...

2)Somewhere someone mentioned in an article that it is expected for her to be in mourning until his actual funeral & resume her sovereign duties the next day. That breaks my heart. There's no end date for grieving. Its a process & pain you learn to live with as time goes by. To speak so finite about something so devastating as losing your partner of over 70 years breaks my heart for the queen.

I suspect that for her keeping busy and continuing with her scheduled engagements will help in some ways. She will grieve, but in private and keeping on keeping on in public is something very ingrained in her. I hope she does have some flexibility and friends and family to talk to - but as others have said there aren't many alive that will have known Phillip as long as she did, and with whom she can share memories, and that may be hard. Even when the death is expected it leaves a huge gap.

Knowing Phillip he would have said “Oh  Come on  Cabbage!  Let’s not be Victorian! get up and get on with it is the best way. Your people and family need you.”

Regarding Phillips birth family I know when Charles and Co were very young Phillips sisters and their children visited and were close but I don’t know if that carried on. Several of his nieces and nephews are still alive.

During a pandemic, it seems a bit much to expect a 90-something person to do public appearances anyway. I'm sure she's vaccinated, but better to not the test the vaccine against variants with the queen.

Apparently Andrew also wants to wear the uniform of an Admiral not a vice admiral. He was supposed to get that “promotion” on his 60th birthday, but it was put on hold due to the scandal. Now he is making his mother decide because she doesn’t have better things to do. He’s such an ass.

I have a feeling or at least like to think Charles maybe stepping up and making such petty decisions for her concerning purely family matters. Andrew has said he wants to be her rock now (probably to make him self look good and wiggle back into the inner fold)  but we will see as Charles has never been at all close or overly soft on him or Edward either.

Re the guest all wearing suits, to be fair this is all over the British news so I suspect it’s true. They are announcing the funeral guest list  shortly but according to the news here three of Philips German family are currently in the UK isolating ready for Saturday. They did not come to his  wedding because of sensitivity around the recent war but apparently he was very keen they were represented at his funeral.
