When my kids were little, I got newsprint (like for packing) and taped it on the walls. The kids could draw to their heart's content, no marks on the walls and I could replace the paper when they had colored the paper that was up.

My granddaughters drew a mural on the inside of their closet and I cried my eyes out the day we had to paint over it when we sold the house.

My mom threw a birthday party for my little sister where she got non-toxic paints and plastic smocks and told my sister and her friends to just have a go at the walls of the garage. We left the murals/frescos up until it was time to sell the house. My dad jokes that as you walked around the garage, you could tell which of my sister's friends failed the House-Tree-Person Test and was definitely going to be a serial killer.

A few commenters on the food pics on Instagram were really praising the how interesting the food looked and how they hadn't thought of trying that sort of thing.

I know not to be too judgmental about food knowledge, and I'm certainly biased (beans, rice, and salsa were my parents' pre-payday-week meal my entire life), but I can't fathom for the life of me how someone following the Dillards and who knows how to use Instagram comments truly hasn't pictured beans + cheese + tortillas as a food combination.

All of her food pictures look like shit. I hope that stuff tastes better than it looks. She needs a class in food photography. Or just look at a damn cookbook and see how the dishes are garnished and presented. I'm stabby after the JRod car grifting scandal. Fundies thinking they are so damn special when they really, truly, are not.

She needs a class in foods.  Spices and veggies, rice and beans with fn spices.  They live in Arkansas, where is the bbq?!  Geesh.  And, take the damn picture before you start eating it.  This is not hard,  I'd bet the majority here can do and does do this.  It's annoying me, this lack of decent food.  Velveeta and sweet whipped cream ( still thinking it could very well be Cool whip) soup!!  I rest my case.

Yea.... I mean quesadillas and burritos Have always been my go to. And it seems weird to me, that anyone would be unaware of those kinds of basics — but I saw some sort of food article today - and realized I’d never had grits, or okra, or chitterlings. I only had a soft boiled egg for the first time a year ago - and I’m old.

Chitterlings are GROSS!!! Okra and grits are the foods of the gods. Soft boiled eggs are also disgusting...

I like eggs in pretty much all forms, although fried sunny side up is probably my favorite.

I know how to make both and completely understand the difference, but it drives me crazy how similar soft boiled eggs and poached eggs are. Yet, one is meh and the other is $15 a pop at brunch.

I'll eat either, but wine poached eggs on toast is a favorite late night drunk snack at home for me. Hey Jill- you should do a cooking blog on that!

I love okra. I was thinking recently about how I've really only eaten it with either Southern (American) food or Indian food, which seem like two very different things.

Okra  - yum.   My grandma was from OK and fried okra in her cast iron skillet is one of my favorite memories .I cheat now and buy already breaded okra, and deep fry it.   Sometimes that is all I have - breakfast or supper.

I had never tasted Miracle Whip till late last year. Now I love the stuff. I think I want to try Turnips... does anyone have a tasty way to cook them?

I agree with @feministxtian regarding grits, okra, chitlins, and soft-boiled eggs. lol

I grew up in Arkansas. I didn't have a burrito or a quesadilla until I was in my 20s and living overseas where a neighbor family introduced those to me. My mother certainly never made either item.

Okra:  picked, boiled, fried - I don't care, I just LOVE it. :)

Edit:  @SweetLaurel - don't buy that stuff! Chop up okra ("bread" it with cornmeal and salt/pepper), throw it in the skillet with some grease (yes, bacon grease IS best). THAT is fried okra!

I’m from an extremely diverse area of New Jersey, and I never had a burrito until chipotle opened up in my town. Mind you, I was an extremely picky little kid and detested taco bell (I still do). Instead of making quesadillas my mom made grilled cheese, so my brothers and I would actually eat it.

Now though (at least in my area), quesadillas and burritos are extremely popular and trendy, so I’m kind of surprised people haven’t tried it recently.

Same here, just Connecticut instead of New Jersey. I hadn’t had a burrito or quesadilla until college. Husband and I came up with a simple and easy burrito recipe - our daughter isn’t a big fan of meat (other than breaded chicken), but she will inhale anything with black beans in it. So we make a lot of burritos and vegan chili now and it makes our tummies very happy. :pb_lol:

I also had never had homemade sauce prior to dating my now-husband. He grew up on homemade sauce because he’s Italian and originally from New York and apparently that’s what they do. I’ve been converted though - it’s absolutely worth my time and effort to make sauce at home. It’s tastes much fresher and better to me now than storebought.

Haha my mom is also an Italian New Yorker, but I swear she’s the least Italian person I’ve ever met. On the rare occassion she decides to make sauce she puts chunks of carrots in it

For those with gardens okra is pretty easy to grow. The plants get big but they produce so much you only need a few.

My childhood "Mum doesn't feel like cooking" meal was beans on toast.  With a cup of tea.

I have the most "British Isles" background of all time - all English, Scottish and Irish.  lol.

I probably didn't have any "ethnic" food until I was in my late teens/early 20s and moved out of the very small town I grew up in.

Same here! Sometimes with grated cheddar cheese mixed through the beans. White bread for the toast and a pint of tea!!!!!

Okra is super yummy, but I've noticed the last few times I've eaten it that it makes my stomach feel weird within an half hour or so of eating it...

My nephew's fiancee had never eaten the following foods until we fed them to her:

Enchiladas, tacos, burritos, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes made with real potatoes (also was totally fascinated watching my mother make them as she had no idea how a potato could be mashed), lemonade, brats, baked beans and there are probably more that she just didn't tell us were firsts.

In her family, they were never allowed to eat or drink anything her father did not like and they literally never ate in a restaurant her entire life. She had never been to a fast food place until music field trips in high school and was never at any other restaurant until nephew took her (upside for him is that he took her to Applebee's for her birthday once and she gushed on Facebook as if it were a five star gourmet restaurant). She has also never taken a drink of a carbonated beverage because he doesn't like them. She is apparently afraid of that as she won't go near any when we have them around (and this includes sparkling water, not just soda).

And before someone explains poverty to me: Her father is a civilian contractor on an Air Force base and her parents also own a retail business ( a real one, not a home based MLM). They are not poor.

They may not be poor but are super controlling!  Never eating anything he didn't like?  I hate how controlling people (like my MIL) can be about food.  Just let your kids try something if they want (and you can afford it).

Many people just don't try things outside of what their families eat, so they don't get anything their grandparents didn't eat and so on.  Also then it becomes hard to cook things, because you never learned how to cook that thing, even that obvious thing.  It took 20 years of marriage for my parents to figure out how to cook fish and chicken, because their parents didn't do it.  Its easier now with the internet (you can find recipes from almost anywhere, though we had a hard time with Mongolia between recipes and ingredients) but you have to want to.

We try really hard to branch out so our kid will be interested in other cultures, but you have to put active effort into it or we would only ever eat French, Mexican, Italian, Indian, and "American."  Just because they are our favorites.  It can be surprising how little people have branched out, until you really look at yourself and see how little you probably do too, again unless your really trying.

Oh, I don't need told how controlling that girl's parents are. She graduated college and was ready to start grad school at this time a year ago. I asked her this logical question at a family event in July: "Have you found a place to live in (grad school city) yet?".

Answer: "My parents are working on it, so I'm waiting for them to tell me. "

They are over the top controlling helicopter parents who are not letting go of either of their daughters who are 25 and 23 years old. Among other problems with this prospective marriage, I don't think nephew understands that these people are going to expect to control their lives.

That poor girl and your poor nephew!  I hope he gets the idea before they become too serious, that can be a horrible realization to have!

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
