Sears Catalog? But, didn't that have pictures of ladies modeling sensible undergarments? Surely such evil never crossed the Maxwell threshold?

It's what passes for porn at Chez Maxwell.

Teri sounds so cheery.

I would get so damn bored in the Maxwell household. No movies, no TV, no books except the Bible... Life must be so damn boring and repetitive. It's a double shame that the girls are stuck there for eternity, no opportunity to get out and have babies so that they have something to do.

@Black Aliss and @Screamapillar, I heard Michael Landon say more than 30 years ago on the Phil Donahue show that when he was growing up teenage boys loved looking at the women's underwear section of the Sears catalog.  Bras and girdles and garter belts, oh my!

Teri's idea of a worthwhile world sounds like my idea of hell.

The thing is, I am not sure the Maxwell girls and Jesse would understand the joy of books, movies or TV since they have never experienced it. They may actually think that eating cheese paper or clearing brush in the yard is exciting. I don't doubt that they think those of us out in the world are jealous of the righteous life they live. Even without a husband, kids or adult freedom, Sarah may think that her life is full as she is living the way she believes God wants her to.

When you think about it, it's kind of amazing that Sarah is allowed to write books. :my_confused:

They always want another income stream.

I understand what he's getting at, but the whole argument is kind of dumb. The sears catalog has mostly been replaced by shopping websites, but even in the bible people went to markets and bought things, or bartered with their neighbors. Cell phones have mostly replaced pay phones and land lines, but that doesn't mean people don't need to communicate with each other. Did his family not release a book about being a great communicator? If communication between people is only relevant "for a time", why should anyone buy his book?

The book on being a great communicator was a woeful waste of paper, ink, and time.  (Like most, if not all, of the Maxwell tomes.)

I am amazed and horrified that people actually buy, read, and praise said books.  But then, I am a voracious reader and have read good stuff.

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Wish Book" doesn't it?

If you read the Dad's Corners over the last year, and  then the blog, there seems to be an inverse relationship between them.  Steve has become more harsh and restrictive at the same time the blog gives the impression that the family are loosening up. Not quite sure what is going on there...

The need to make a buck vs. Steve's need to be a ranty asshole. The blog is sweetness and light focusing on cute children and puppies to keep their fans returning so that they can be sold stuff.  On the other hand, Steve is a controlling jerk who believes he has a direct connection to God.  Steve has rigid standards which means everyone is supposed to act, think, and feel a certain way-- Steve's way-- so be grateful that his Dad's Corner is his only access to you.

There was a post a few back, on Feb. 15, that shows someone sitting in a chair reading a book. There is a piece of paper over the spine so you can't tell what it is. I'm very curious about what book made it into the Maxwell house.

I think it is Kisses From Katie based on the orange, and how the pictures match.  http://www.amazon.com/Kisses-Katie-Story-Relentless-Redemption/dp/1451612095/ref=sr_1_95?ie=UTF8&qid=1456264075&sr=8-95&keywords=christian+best+sellers

I think you're right about the book salex (great sleuthing btw!) but I was surprised to read the description of the book on Amazon!

Something about Kate disobeying her parents and going to Uganda.

I know one of the reasons they claimed the Moody books were so good was because they don't show  kids who disobey their parents

Pagers? Does anyone still use those? Pay phones are practically non existent (sad, as ones cell battery can die and there aren't always people who will loan you theirs.)

And the last time I saw a Sears catalog was in the 90s.

Steve is really out of touch.

So it would seem.  She seems to have married in the last little bit.  She has facebook  https://www.facebook.com/KatieinUganda/info/?tab=page_info,  and a blog (which I gather the book used quite a bit) http://katiedavis.amazima.org

I wonder if the piece of paper covering the book is there because Katie is only wearing one T-shirt in the photo on the book cover.  Can't have John and Jesse getting hot and bothered by a scantily dressed lady and a salacious book title.  No kisses for Katie while Steve is in charge of the family's modesty standards! ;)

Katie Davis is one of the rare stories where i think she's done good work in the community. Yes, she is out there converting for Jesus, but she is also right in the thick of it. If the blog stories are to be believed (I've read since the beginning), she never backs away from challenges, and often is putting her health and life in direct danger. I've been very impressed.

Except if she's trying to do that, she's doing a piss poor job. I can still see Katie's "immodest" neckline, and the top of the book where the title is. I believe Sarah is just holding the piece of paper she uses as a bookmark. I do that, too.

I hope it's just happenstance but then again it makes sense Steve wouldn't let them advert a book that didn't fatten the Maxwell coffers.

I'm glad to know that's Sarah against whose feet Ellie is napping.  Heaven forfend that one of the sisters would bogart the pup's affections from her!!!

@Trynn, I don't know about pagers as I suppose most people would just use their smartphones for that.  (I just have a dumbphone and I need it mostly because there are so few pay phones around.) I still have a landline for my primary phone which I prefer.

There is a reason you've not seen a Sears catalogue since the 90s. The big catalogue ceased publication in 1993 although smaller specialty catalogues were still produced.  (I wonder if the Farm Catalogue is among them.  IIRC, my dad ordered his first bees from Sears and yes, I picked them up from the letter carrier.)  The Christmas "Wish Book" was re-introduced in 2007, but it's not as big as it used to be.

So much for the "My children don't read" edict from Steve.  So they do read books other than the Bible.  I wonder what else they do that they pretend otherwise? Put meat in their burritos?  Watch the news?  Have FUN?!  Maybe Steve's grip is not as tight as we thought.

I wonder if Sarah is getting any ideas about becoming a missionary like her character in the Moody books?  You say that Katie wasn't married when she started?  Hmmm

I commented asking what book it was and got no response. Weirdos.
