I had to watch the last special via DVR.  NOT riveting material.  Bin should not be allowed to speak on camera without cue cards (as if he could manage those!)  He comes across as a dim witted boy who seems surprised to find himself becoming a parent.  His demeanor makes it easy for me to speculate  diminished intellect - which leads me  to his wife, who agreed to spend the rest of her life with this ...

Wow.

TLC did a great job showing us the dynamic, robust personalities of JJ and their spouses.   Scary they breed  - err, procreate.

It's really too bad Jill doesn't have more ambition. I think if she did, she could have started a precedent of going to college that would have benefited her younger siblings.

While women working outside the home in general is looked down upon by the fundie contingent, being a nurse (especially a nurse who attends births) is one of the few careers for women that is often grudgingly accepted as necessary for the continuation of society. If she wanted to go to school to be an RN, her parents and their cohort would probably have accepted it. Once the first kid went, it would have been easier for the others that followed.

Unfortunately, I don't think Jill actually wants to be a nurse (or a midwife.) I think she wants to play at being a nurse/midwife while staying home and basically having the easiest life that's humanly possible while still conforming to conservative ideals and enjoying exotic travel.

This clinic provides comprehensive services, based simply on the sign outside the entrance that was shown onscreen, some of which are in direct oppostion to Jill's religious views (assuming her views are the same as her parents', which, of course they are). I paused the episode to transcribe and translate the sign outside the entrance:

prenatal appointments
control post natal -- I couldn't translate this. I find, as a native English speaker, that often words that look like they could be translated literally, shouldn't be. Do we have any Guatemalans who can explain this phrase?
vbac
birth preparation classes
routine gynecology (pap smears)
family planning
pediatrics
natural medicine -- another "obvious" translation that I may have gotten wrong

This looks like a good clinic that does good work, and who founded or funds them isn't important to me--the list of orgs they work with and appreciate includes some that have religious-sounding names (I didn't investigate them, so I could be wrong). I just think it's funny that TLC set up a "Jill practices midwifery in the mission field" segment at a clinic that is actively trying to improve women's health, lower birthrates, and give women more power over their lives when the Duggars are actively doing the opposite in the US. I'm guessing they chose this place because it was nearby; I would be floored if Jill had her pick of clinics to work with and intentionally chose one so progressive.

I'm not sure how previous births have been portrayed (I didn't watch the infamous toilet birth or J'chelle's various filmed births), but being honest about how difficult and painful labor is makes sense to me, since their theology is centered around how fallen humans are, and part of the punishment directed toward women because of dirty, dirty, filthy, whore Eve was that women were cursed to deliver babieez in pain forevermore.

In that case, wouldn't keeping sweet during labor be an act of supreme hubris? Not that I'd put it past any of the Duggars, though...

While it would be nice to see their reaction, I'm concerned that making a public display of that would lead to backlash against the clinic by their followers, and I wouldn't want to see hardworking healthcare providers be harassed just for the sake of scoring a point on the Duggars.

I doubt they're influential enough for that to be an issue, but I take your point.

Yeah, I don't see the Duggars as particularly influential, but all it takes is a few people with a phone or e-mail account and a grudge to make a provider's life difficult, sad to say.

Am I too cynical when I think that all the talk about adoption is an attempt at a story-line? I just feel all of their lives, with the exception of the younger children, are driven by story-lines. They must be aware how well the adoption story-line played on The Little Couple. The Little Couple's show was #1 on TLC during that time. Mr. Becket thinks I am too cynical sometimes so maybe I am reading it differently than intended.  I just happen to think they are a bunch of phonies who do very little public service unless a camera is filming it.

I think it may be because finally people are talking about her, not the rest of the Duggar women. Plus, she may want to show she is attractive and that there was no reason for her husband to stray. Fundy women really only have their looks to offer. We have seen from the Duggars that they don't have to be great cooks. You don't have to be a stellar teacher because your kids won't go to college. All you need to do is look attractive for your husband and pump out babies. The makeup on her face is likely the only thing she is allowed to control.

Also, Bin wants 15 sons? Does that mean that Jessa will have to raise her own kids? If they have no girls to do it for them? I hope this was the last we see of Jill, Jessa and the idiot husbands.

A part of me wonders if Jessa's interest in adopting arose from hearing about her parents struggling with 5 kids under 5. When the j'slaves weren't yet old enough to run things. She was an early kid and saw a lot of lean years. When the brood got big, things started coming their way. So maybe she sees it as a way to fastrack to the cushy part (a very unwise approach, imo). But then as headship, Bin wants boys because of course he does. And Jessa has maybe not reflected enough to put it all together yet or I don't know what.
