Im not one to post when disagreements turn ugly. But what's wrong with this country is this! Agreeing to disagree is far more decent then attacking someone disability! If you can't agrue your point then don't turn to acting like a 5 year old to try to prove it. Sadly too many in both parties do this same thing in Congress!! And claiming she called you a name first still makes you sound 5!

Newsflash not everyone with a disability can work! It not because of Lazyiness!

This is possibly one of the meanest trolls I've seen in awhile. People like her will never leave, though. She'll always be back to spread her mean stupidity.

Congress voted (unanimously) today to pay back pay to the federal workers that have been furloughed once they are back to work. So that is something at least. It's a relief for us and I'm sure the other furloughed workers as well. However, it also makes me wonder if they did that because they have no intention of ending this shutdown anytime soon.

We haven't decided yet, what we are going to do since we were ok to pay our mortgage this month (my biggest worry), but if it looks like the shutdown is going to continue my husband is going to have to either apply for unemployment or pick up some kind of temp work since we and our pets like to eat and have electricity and running water etc.

Can we refuse to pay our federal income taxes for the period during which the government is shut down? I think we should. The, I'll send my share to you and your husband.

I think we need JFC to come and enlighten her on the differences between communism and socialism.

JFC would be wasted on Ruby. No need to cast pearls before swine.

Plus, I do think its just trolling now to get a reaction.

I suspect she's trying to upset me/other folks here with her posts regarding disabled people since she can't seem to come up with much of an actual argument and just keeps spewing talking points and historical inaccuracies.

Personally, I just find her pathetic. When your best argument is calling disabled people lazy and putting disabled in scare quotes, really how much further down to you have to go before you are scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Using the argument that spending a lot of time on the internet OBVIOUSLY means that one could get a job is so ridiculous on it's face that it just makes me laugh. She clearly didn't think that one through very well. Apparently she has never heard of things called laptops or mobile devices that allow you to be online when you are confined to a bed (just as one example of the stupidity of her argument).

Obviously, all disabled people can work and that is why there is no govt program (or handout to use hgr's language) for those who can't work.....oh wait

I don't know who ruby is, but I doubt s/he is a black businesswoman who is also a stay at home mother who is cutting her employee's hours but somehow finds the cash to pay for her Jamaican vacation.

I think it's more of a saddo loner trying to be glib. We've wasted too much intelligence on this one...they are only playing the "let's rile up the feminist!" game.

I will state though, that I can't believe that I'm working harder than the people picking my lettuce or laying asphalt on the roads in my neighborhood, even though I probably make 3x more than they do.

That reminds me of a story from when I first moved to Germany. As we discussed the German education system with a neighbor, we learned that they "track" their kids after 4th grade...college prep or vocation. As we talked about low paying labor jobs, our neighbor said "Well, they should have done better in school". Not school as Americans know it but in the primary grades. I find it tragic that their employment opportunities are determined at such a young age...but commendable that at 16, for those not continuing to higher education, start training for the many votech jobs that are needed.

Work for a German company and have discussed same with German colleagues. I agree that it's rather sad that a kid's "track" is determined so early because it doesn't allow for any "late bloomers" or kids that have learning issues that resolve later.

I did notice she/he (because I am not buying that it's a she) was saying some very particular things that would be bound to rile up folks here. But her/his response to Curious was just mean.

And she/he ain't in Jamaica. More like Mom's basement.

Exactly. The people who have the hardest time getting any sort of health care are people who ARE working, but working at jobs where the employer doesn't carry insurance. And those jobs are at least as necessary as the type of employment where health benefits are almost always available.

I don't know that this poster is a troll. Overall she sounds a lot like a few people I went to high school with. Okay with same sex marriage and abortion and to the left on most social issues , but get rabidly anti -government when it comes to any kind of safety net. Mostly they started out with no money and figure if they can become well off anyone can. Of course they forget they went to schools funded by the government and in many cases received a lot of other government support at different times. They post stupid stuff on Facebook all the time.

That type of behavior is exactly the type of behavior that lead to the shutdown in the first place. Let's say the Tea Party is right, the ACA is bad. Ok, so they attempt to get it repealed, unsuccessfully. They know there is no way the democrats in congress, or the president are going to let it be defunded. They know this, and yet, the only way they will pass a budget is if they get their way on the ACA. Sorry guys, good or bad, the ACA is law. Instead of whining about it, try to come up with different cuts to make, so the budget can get passed. Think about if the democrats did this. What if they said "we're shutting down the government until we get gun control, or gay rights" I'd be just as unhappy with my own party if they behaved that way. You do not get to have a tantrum and hold the economy hostage. I believe the tea partiers are wrong, but entitled to their opinion, just like I'm entitled to mine, it is their way of expressing that opinion that I object to.

Back pay won't be given to all of those sub-contractors like my neighbor. It won't do anything for the businesses that rely on tourists to the Grand Canyon and other National parks. At this point I am beginning to fear for the retail sales; Christmas is going to be dismal this year.

QFT! At first I'd be happy that something is going with my personal political beliefs, but then I'd be ashamed at how forced the situation had to be in order to make it happen. While I may daydream about "what if I woke up and X was different?", I know there's a process to it and that the process should be respected.

Also, are people able to defer things like paying rent if they're not getting paid? Or would credit card companies defer payment? Because I personally don't have much in savings and if I was furloughed, I'd likely only make one month's rent before needing alternative financing and/or asking family for money.

Furloughed employees qualify for unemployment which, thankfully, is still going out.

You might be be able to defer your rent, it depends on your relationship with your landlord and the specific renter's laws in your state.

You might also be able to put off paying certain utilities, again, it depends on the laws in your state and policies of your specific utilities companies.

This whole government shut down is childish; it is like your 2 year old telling you that they are going to hold their breath until you give them another cookie. The biggest problem is that there is SO much mis information regarding the ACA out there. There are a number benefits that are great-pre-existing conditions are now covered, no lifetime caps, preventative care covered and finally after how many years of fighting covered WOMEN CARE. For my family it is a blessing-our eldest son was born with a congenital heart by the time he was 5 years old we had already used up his life time cap ($1 million), we were lucky to live in a state that offered us coverage until he was 21, but what do you do after that? Pay out of pocket for care it cost us about $10,000 per year to support him so that he could receive the care that he needs, he is 32 college educated and employed. Last year ACA started a program that we could use to get him covered, so that he can remain as a tax-paying member of society. Yes we were in financial situation that allowed us to help him out regarding his medical needs, but what about families that can’t? Do they let their child die?

Yesterday I was at an event signing up people for ACA, had an elderly lady come to the table and started yelling at me about how bad Obama care is and that she is not going to sign up. After she got done with her Tea party and FOX speech. I asked her if she had Medicare, of course the answer was “YESâ€, and then explained the benefits that she would receive from the law. At that point she started argue with me that I did not know anything-Rush told her that she is going to lost coverage if she did not sign up for OBAMA CARE. At that point I just stopped-You cannot debate with crazy – walked away she followed and continued on her rant. Finally security came and escorted her out of the building. Had another family stop by-they have 10 children who are covered by state insurance however he refuses to let his wife to sign up for a family plan, which they could get for free no out of pocket because he is against health insurance because he does not what the government to know about his life. He totally believes that if he does that the federal government will review his medical history and tell him what to do or even worst they will make his wife take birth control, which they could use. After the event we all decided that we need to start listening to FOX and Rush so that we can understand where all this craziness is coming from.

Oh yeah, the lacking in empathy is really strong with a lot of libertarians. And many of them still cling to those beliefs about "everyone else" even after they hit some major catastrophe and end up needing help themselves. Then they go on and on about how their case is different and everyone else is a parasite. I worked in a social services agency that provides support to families in crises, and the clients who used to have everything and lost it were the hardest to work with, by far.

It's up to individual mortgage holders I think. I know my husband called our's to find out if there was some kind of temporary deferment in place during the shutdown for those put on furlough and they told him he was "free to fill out their normal hardship paperwork, but there was no guarentee."

I'm hoping that companies will be understanding during this period because obviously with the shut down there are going to be hundreds of thousands of people that can't pay any number of bills for who knows how long, through no fault of their own.
