@samurai_sarah  I would feel violated too if my grown kids came in and did that. There is stuff in our room that is totally private. Plus, I love to decorate and would want to pick out my own stuff, not have someone else do it.

I wouldn't like it either but that's one of the jurisdictions so some kid is in there every day cleaning. To them it may seem normal.

I don't think they really "surprised" them, the probably asked can we change stuff up and JimBoob said yes, and then the reveal was the actual surprise.

I would disown anyone who did that to me. As in: "Don't go into my bedroom, while I'm away! Don't change anything! Don't touch my stuff!". I would feel that my boundaries were violated. Other people may feel differently, but to me, personally, that would be a bridge too far.

Is that still common practice? (Asking, because you spoke in past-tense in your post. No judgement, just want to know.)

It has been awhile so I'm not sure what is done currently. I know they use pacifiers.  And to clarify when I had to be directly involved in a circ I would hold the baby until the doctor was completely ready before I strapped them down.  It was traumatic to me to have to witness it. I really don't understand the rational beyond religious reasons and even then it's difficult because that is the rationale used to do it to girls as well. I explained to my sons that it was their body their choice and that if they chose to do it later then at least they would be able to understand what was going on and what the pain was associated with. They thanked me as adults for showing them that respect.

We did it with LO. They used anastasia, and he was honestly more bothered by the shots than the procedure. My understanding is that this is the common way now.

Not saying it isn't hard to watch anyway, it is.

Kids allowed free run in their parents' bedroom, eh? So I guess Michelle and JimBob don't have a goody drawer to... *ahem*... "enhance" their joyful fellowship, then??

I'll see myself out.

Oh but JimBob and Michelle are available to their kids 24/7 so their room is never off limits. Because your kids have to be able to open their hearts to you.  Except when that big lock on the inside of the bedroom door is closed. Then the kids, and their open hearts, can fuck right off.

I like the room, they did a nice job. Hopefully Jim Bob at least was warned ahead of the remodel so any personal items could be stored away.

The thing that would make me really pissed is if they got rid of the awesome massage chair- I would kill over that.

Yes it is. It absolutely is.

Okay, seriously, STOP!

What you describe about the circumcisions you'v attended sounds terrible, and I hope that it's not like that anymore. But that is still in no way comparable to female genital mutilation (FGM). If you really are a nurse, you should know that.

This is just a description of the adverse health effects of FGM from the Wikipedia article, but any scientific source you'll find will say pretty much the same thing:

Quote

Adverse health effects depend on the type of procedure; they can include recurrent infections, difficulty urinating and passing menstrual flow, chronic pain, the development of cysts, an inability to get pregnant, complications during childbirth, and fatal bleeding. There are no known health benefits.

[...]

A 2013 meta-analysis of 15 studies involving 12,671 women from seven countries concluded that women with FGM were twice as likely to report no sexual desire and 52 percent more likely to report dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse). One third reported reduced sexual feelings.

Whatever your feelings are on male circumcision - and I totally understand if you are against it - it is absolutely not comparable to FGM. Please, please stop making this comparison. You are doing immesurable harm to the fight against FGM, and you're not exactly strengthening your own case against male circumcision either.

I'm sorry but I don't have to stop! I'm an advocate to bring awareness of any type of human mutilation. And if you are working to help end FGM then I applaud you and wish for success.

But we also know how fast these things can change with fundies. Jana might be married and pregnant as early as next year.

Next year? She could be married and pregnant in two months. This is the Duggars after all, if God provides you with a godly partner there’s no need to actually get to know the person before you agree to spend eternity with them. That’s only for heathens that doesn’t trust the Lord.

/Iamtheway - 6 years between meeting and getting married and that was roughly 50% because we loved eachother and wanted to spend our lifes together and 50% so that we would be eligible to adopt if the ivf didn’t work.

Wow what you describe sounds way different than the circumcisions I've seen when I've gone to a bris. The mohel (the person who performs the circumcision) usually gives the baby a little bit of wine, snips, and that's it. The babies cry for a second or two. I've never seen a baby get really upset and I've never seen anyone strap the baby down or hold him down in any sort of aggressive way. It's usually very quick and much more painful for the mother than the baby.

I understand most non-Jews may see circumcision differently, but it honestly comes off as offensive to me when people call it mutilation and act like it's this despicable, harmful thing. Whatever your feelings about circumcision may be, please understand that there are people for whom this is a sacred religious tradition. Many of our forefathers were unable to participate in this due to antisemitism, and I feel privileged to live in a world where I'd be free to have a bris for my child.

First, I didn't watch all of the videos because there is only so much of Michelle's surprised baby voice I can take.

However, I never noticed before how much Jana's voice sounds exactly like Jessa. Hearing it off camera, I thought it was Jessa talking until Jana appeared in the frame.

Michelle looks so much like Jinger in all of these shots.

Is that photo of JB in the desk nook the one that Jill used to have in the girls' room? I like the idea of Jana getting rid of it by putting it in her parents' room. However, it's probably either a different JB pic or an extra copy.

Is that a police car parked outside the window? Did they buy it to flip it? Is it there for another reason? I can't imagine one of the honorary sheriffs, or whatever John David is, would be given an official car.

Whenever I see the "grow old with me, the best is yet to be" signs I think of the John Lennon song. I wonder if the Duggars know of that connection? I mean, it's a pretty tame song, they probably wouldn't be scandalized by it.

I can't wrap my head around that. ... no. I'm just going to skip what i was going to say and go spend some time in the prayer closet. ?:brainbleach:

I have another take on the Jana redoing the room that I don't think was mentioned yet. I don't see Michelle as the kind of person who would take on a decorating project or remodel (I think we would have heard of her doing that by now?). Maybe she has been dropping hints that she would like it done. I do that sometimes to my husband. Something that I might get around to doing myself, but would be pleasantly surprised if he took the hint to do (simple things like hooks for the towels being changed out for example; I could do that and would if he hadn't, but if he has time and wants to I would be happy if he did since I have other things that would be more important to me to get done first). That would be clever on Michelle's part, she gets a nice made over room and had to do none of the work simply by mentioning it around Jana. She may have then stashed any private things away, but are we really thinking there is anything private in that room? I mean these people do not seem the type.

Anyone want to lay odds on this little home reno turning up in an episode soon? I'm guessing its pretty high.

If that massage chair is the same one they had at Costco its about $4000.  I wonder where it went after the renovation.

I would be 99.999999% positive that Jim Bob and Michelle don't use any sex toys in the bedroom. The most they would probably use is maybe fancy underwear, and some lube. Fundies don't even believe in oral sex, let alone vibrators.

I mean a hitachi magic wand can technically pass as a neck massager if you didn't know any better. "Man, mom sure has a lot of neck massagers. She's so old." ?

But that's the thing - they wouldn't even know that a neck massager COULD be used for anything else.

@dsjbeam, this is not the first time you have made medical claims that seemed off on this board.  The last time, it was surrounding vaccines, and you were found to be not only incorrect, but also making the erroneous claim that the CDC/WHO recommendations were in line with what you were saying, which they were not at all.  For someone who claims to work in the medical field, the fact that you were not only UNAWARE of the proper recommendations by the CDC/WHO but then did not even do a basic search to confirm them before claiming they supported your agenda was deeply concerning and for me personally, completely eroded any trust I may have had in you as a responsible medical provider.

Posters should be aware of your history here and take your medical claims with a grain of salt, as you have a history of attempting to distort facts to fit your agenda.

Not to make this conversation too uncomfortable--but is this true for most Protestant fundamentalists?

I know that Traditionalist Catholics allow for oral and manual sex, just as long as everything finishes inside the vagina (thereby allowing for a possible pregnancy). So cunnilingus is definitely fine, and fellatio if used as foreplay. Role playing, toys, S&M, and swinging from a chandelier are all allowed between married couples. The only things I can think that are off limits are viewing pornography, threesomes/orgies, and using birth control. I believe the LDS and most Muslims have similar rules, while also allowing for the use of birth control.

Speaking as someone who was raised in the most traditional Catholic environment possible (taught by nuns as well ?), we were actually told that sex toys/aids were absolutely fine. Once it's a man and woman, wedded together in holy matrimony, then anything you do to each other behind closed doors is fine...

Once you didn't do anything to prevent pregnancy OR do it purely as an alternative to the type of sex that gets ya pregnant, obviously!

Jeepers, I never thought I'd be holding the Catholic Church up as an example of reasonable behaviour!!!

I do think oral sex varies from fundie to fundie and falls into a relatively grey area. Sex toys were generally fine for married couples to use together. Anal sex, I think is pretty taboo because of health risks and yeah because that's "what gays do." Pornography, solo masturbation,  and threesomes are off limits for even more moderate fundie types. The always charming John Piper made sure to give wives permission to disobey their husbands if he asked them to participate in group sex. Now being beaten by their husbands was a different story. That they "had to endure for a night." So yeah group sex is more sinful than domestic violence to some fundies.
