Not sure, but on facebook,  Shoshanna and The Boy went to The City to hear (I think) Candace Owens speak, and were, of course, totally on board with all of her idiotic BS.

They’ve gone multiple times. It seems to be one of their favorite things to do together 🙄

Watersmeet is home of Northwoods, part of Gothard IBLP. it says it is temporarily closed.  Does IBLP (Bates and who ever else is now running that cult) still own the property? I find it very interesting that they picked Watersmeet, considering what other fundie group is already established there - even if they were there for a short period of time.

Interesting.  Watersmeet is a remote, bitty town of ~1,400 people.  I wonder how the Gothard people found it.

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Chippewa Indian Community is located at Watersmeet, Michigan in the western most region of the Upper PeninsuIa.

I think we discussed this before, but both places (Watersmeet and Gallup, NM) are major Native American communities.

Gallup is a huge hub for shopping because as others have mentioned it borders the Navajo reservation which is hug and sprawling with not a lot of commerce. It' not unheard of for people to travel an hour or more to shop there.

I think they were looking for an extremely remote place with only a tiny town nearby. North woods is the location where in the 70s and 80s Gothard’s brother is accused of isolating and raping women. Gothard had known for years that his brother Steve had been preying on young women staff members. The stuff that went down at Northwoods is why Gothard had to resign at one point. Some of the women brought there said that they felt like they had been enslaved and had no way to escape. At that time Gothard required many staff members to sell all their possessions and even get rid of any insurance policies to prove they fully believed in the Institute. So yeah, the isolation was a huge selling point for the Gothard brothers. They wanted people isolated with no means of escape.

I wonder if there were even functional all weather roads when Gothard bought that place. However, they did own at least a plane or two, and probably had a runway built.

The millions Gothard poured into the Northwoods  caused a lot of concerns for IBLP members. He was expecting to hosts presidents and world leaders there. That particular dream luckily never came true.

Has the property been sold? I can't imagine they are still holding on to it.

From the web page, it sounds like they still own it. But the page seems to be written by a 5 year old (no offense to 5 year olds). Typical horrid fundie writing.

I wonder if Northwoods belongs to Gothard personally some how or maybe it still makes money. It's an enormous complex that looks like a massive headache to maintain. Just re-roofing it could lead to bankruptcy.

What looks like a paved road near the conference center is actually the paved runway.  They subtly emphasize the air accessibility aspect with a picture of a small plane.

Northwoods

Shoshanna has been pretty much MIA from social media since Xmas.

Meanwhile, in the most recent issue of the NJG magazine, her father praises her child-rearing ability but manages to avoid mentioning James or even acknowledging that she has (or had) a husband who is father to her children:

Quote

It has been so long since I had children I have forgotten most of my experiences, but every day I see fresh examples of little ones being trained up in the way they should go. My youngest daughter, Shoshanna, living nearby, is a beautiful example of excellent child training. Her four children range in age from a boy sixteen to a one-year-old girl. In her training I see some recycling of the way we trained her and some new or different ways that are her own creation...You ask, “How will it work out when they are older?” Her oldest child is Jeremiah, now sixteen, and he is the most stable teen you will ever meet. His confidence level is off the charts. He is highly intelligent, a competitive conversationalist on politics and world affairs. He takes full responsibility to help raise the younger children and will no doubt make an excellent father someday if the Lord tarries.

How will he become a good father when his father doesn’t even live in the home?!?!

I am being sarcastic. But it’s definitely something fundies would say. There must be two parents in the home. Otherwise how will daughters learn to be mothers and sons learn to be fathers.

He's old enough they can promote him to grown-up and tell him he's the man of the house. It's traditional in their culture. Fortunately he only has three younger siblings.

“He takes full responsibility to help raise the younger children…” Yes, because as everyone knows, nothing says “She’s a great parent” like glorifying parentification of a child.

Guess we have a new category - "Brother Dads."

OTOH, maybe people who canʻt be bothered to raise their kids themselves shouldn't have them in the first place.

Well, this is probably true for other people but not for the Pearls, even when the father is apparently no longer in the home.

Remember the fundie theme song:   🎼 Do as we say and not as we do 🎶

Shoshanna is still nowhere to be seen on her social media channels but it appears that Debi Pearl may finally be changing her tune. One wonders what got her to see the light.

I wrote a book on marriage, which clearly lays out a woman’s duty to honor her husband. Many thousands of my books have been sold in many languages. You have read it. You know how we teach, yet every day I ask myself, “How do I answer this woman’s letter when clearly she is dealing with a husband who, now, after 15 years of normal marriage, finds violence toward her necessary for his satisfaction? He uses my teaching on wives submitting to their husbands to pressure her over and over until she finally writes begging for help....If there is violence, leave. Never tolerate it. Sexual violence is violence.

“Sexual violence is violence.”

So Debbie, do you accept that what your husband did to you on your wedding night was sexual violence and worthy of divorce or is he still excluded from your new views?

"porn always leads to homosexual behaviour"

The focus seems to be on illegal stuff and porn, not marital rape.

Also tell his mama is said before tell law enforcement.

I'm not giving her much credit here.

Yeah, I think she’s basically taking a baby step when she needs to take a miles long leap.

I hope she uses this disclaimer in everything single thing she writes from now on, because women who read her books stay in violent marriages and endure physical abuse based on her teachings.

It resembles other stuff Debi has written although who knows with those two. For years, their writing style has been folksy & engaging such that it minimizes the horror and vileness of what they tell people to do.

Bottom line: given that these people always project, it seems like there's been some bad, bad stuff going down in Pearl-World. I doubt we'll ever hear the truth of it from them.
