@JordynDarby5.  I have to remind myself that the Awful Orange Menace did NOT win the popular vote.  Hillary Clinton got almost 3 million more votes than Trump.

Regarding "undocumented" immigrants. I have NO sympathy whatsoever. Many of the ones here have had years to get their shit straight, amnesties, etc. When they get deported, I feel they are getting what they should.

Why do I feel this way? I am the daughter of an "undocumented" immigrant who fucked around for years and never did a fucking thing to help herself. The excuses were legend...including the immigration office was on the other side of the bridge tunnel that neither one of my parents would drive. As a result, she had no medicare, no social security, nothing...and I carried the financial hit of taking care of her for 7 fucking years.

So...if you can't get your immigration shit straight...GTFO.

I know this will be unpopular but as someone who's lived this nightmare...I don't care.

@AtlanticTug:  thank you for sharing that post.  I will never forget that Trump didn't try to hide his awfulness.  People knew the sort of unprincipled man they were faced with, and get they voted for him.  So they can claim to be decent Christian people, but their phony Christianity has been exposed.  I'll never forget.

To add to that list, an important one, I think.  45 mocked a POW:  John McCain.   For a group of people that claim to love our military and uphold our veterans,  how could they be ok with this?  Bunch of phony's.  People who are shouting about the sanctity of same sex marriage back a president with 45's record?!  It's bullshit.  Shame on them.

Me too. He comes off way to bitter and angry for someone who chose to leave the show. He comes off as someone who was fired or let go and is angry at his former employer. I'm sure he can't believe that TLC is choosing to air shows about a gay family or transgender instead of him a white Christian. I can't decide if he tried to get a spin off show or was angry at not being featured as much on the show as he thought or tried to get more money out TLC whether a contact or try to get more money out of Sam's delivery. I know it didn't happen but its very rare for TLC to decide not to film a birth. Skipping the after show to go on a babymoon maybe he expecting TLC to cave and come begging to him to be on the show or whatever his demands were. Except Derick didn't realize that TLC didn't have to do that. He had no real leverage because Jill has a million siblings and they have no problem dropping one for another. I don't know maybe it was something completely else. Didn't he mention in one of his recent text as of May 31 he was no longer part of the show? Its interesting that he remembers the exact date. He seemed really happy to be on the show until suddenly they weren't.   I'd love to know what really happened.

As much as I loathe what JB has done and continues to do, he is tolerated because he comes off as doofus in an ah shucks kind of way- Like Gomer Pyle. Derick is an unpolished turd. I can see Derick digging his heels in and getting all righteous. Derick does not realize that you can't speak to/of the "boss" in the same way that you talk to the invisible man in your head, and stay employed. He is majorly immature. JB has faked it til he made it. Unless and until DD grows up and changes his approach, he'll never be successful and Jill will forever be unhappy.

How this discussion unfolded:

"People who voted for Donald Trump are not nice people."

"That's not fair; some of them are nice people, and they had their reasons."

"Their reasons were terrible and they should not be excused."

"WELL FUCK ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! SEND THEM BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM!!!"

Uh, wow. Well, thank you for demonstrating exactly how Trump got elected. Holy fuck.

@feministxtian I’m sorry you had a shitty experience because of your parents supposed lack oF initiative. There are lots of reasons people don’t obtain more permanent residency that involve fear and red tape, but I’ll let your experience be yours.

On the other hand, people come to this country illegally not for funsies to go to Vegas and party it up. They come because of violence and poverty and political unrest and because they want their children to have opportunities they never had. They risk EVERYTHING because they feel they are saving themselves or their children. If the options are: live in a place where I feel my family is in danger and cannot thrive or go elsewhere illegally and hide forever so I don’t get me or my family deported, what would you do? I mean really, what would you do? Let your children fail to thrive on principle?

The law means nothing to a person who is desperate. It’s like stealing diapers and formula so your baby can have the best care you can give them. Sure you can say “get a job” (or a  second job or a third job) but in that moment, you do what you need to do.

I respect your personal experiences being something that guides your views, but “do it legally or gtfo” is shortsighted in my opinion.

Not on American politics, because that is a minefield I absolutely want to stay out of, but on the Hitler comparisons:

I would just very cautiously and kindly interject that history is really darn complicated. The simplified version of what happened is often taught along the lines of: Hitler bad, people fall nearly into two camps (good people and bad people), Germans with Hitler, therefore Germans bad, and Americans good because they were against Hitler. Many political discussions as a consequence seem to follow the reductio ad hitlerium logic - „you support this person, person reminds me of Hitler, therefore you are a Nazi“ and because Nazi is the most evil word we can come up with in public discourse, that is to serve as the final moral judgment of the person. I think that obfuscates the historical development and intellectual origins of national socialism, the complexity of human nature (and its corruptibility, which we all share) and the (at least partial) incomparability of different times, spaces, and cultures, and the independently very worthwhile study of the current American political situation. So it’s really more of a short-cut to dismiss an argument and often doesn’t contribute any intellectual content to a conversation, in my experience.

Full disclosure: German here, so I’m really sensitive to the at times overly casual and reductionist treatment of this history in the American public discourse. Quotes like the one above exemplify this intellectual approach. Pushing these things away from us and pretending that we don’t all have the capacity for weakness, deception, desperation, anger, and evil is the most dangerous thing, because believing yourself to be of higher value, dignity and morality than others is what most dangerous ideologies are built on.

This post is further not directed at any person here, but more so a general reflection on politics discussions in my environment in the US, and the patterns I see.

EDIT: I also really don’t understand why Derrick is so concerned about other people’s families and tweets at them on Twitter all day. Doesn’t he have his own to look after?

Why is so offended by this gay family? Because they are pretty, rich, and are doing the social media thing right. He’s not as mad because they are gay, he’s mad because they are gay and better than him. It kills Derrick to see people doing better than most, especially when they are different than him.

A travesty of a family? How terrible must his own life be that this is how he feels.

Anyone who says "I can't wait for (random person) to get elected president! They're gonna do X, Y, and Z!  has little to no understanding of how American policies and laws happen.

Derick is like one of those tiny yet overly aggressive dogs. If he sees something he doesn't like or doesn't understand, he yaps and yaps until someone puts him in another room and shuts the door. I foresee many doors shutting on Derick unless he grows up soon.

I can't speak for everyone but, in my view the comparison to Hitler has a lot to do with the white supremist/ neo-nazi groups here in America loving 45 and 45 backing them.  Steve Bannon being in the damn WH.  They were given an actual platform and it's horrifying.  Super scary.

ETA: Since I can ask without writing a whole separate post, I have searched far and wide and cannot figure out what “riffles” are- like when people comment on their edit. Maybe I didn’t look hard enough but I swear I tried! Forever indebted to someone who can finally satiate my curiosity on what “riffles” are/means!!!

My mom came here legally, she made her residency and later her citizenship. My mom was told to swim back over to MExico in the Rio Grande. My mom isn't even Mexican. I am all for legal immigration, but anyone with a whiff of Hispanic is classified as an  Mexican in this country maybe even illegal.

Its not that Trump is Hitler, its that every wahoo out there feels safe to be racist because the climate in Washington doesn't care. I think it started with Obama. I think deep down many people were and are against him because he is black. I have relatives who call him a Musim born in Kenya (because that's what Limbaugh said). My husband wasn't thrilled with him as a president but it had nothing to do with the color of his skin, he just thought he wasn't that good. He actually thinks Michelle Obama should have been president and just admires her.

This is really what surprises me the most. He didn't hide his awfulness and still doesn't. He didn't make remarks behind close doors or even say anything that was taken out of context. He did everything on camera. He did mocked disable people in front of the cameras to millions. He made disgusting comments about women on camera. He made racist comments. And he still won. People laughed. Who laughs at someone mocking disabled people? Who votes for someone who does that?

I can't believe I'm going to admit this on here. I voted for Trump. I voted for him because he wasn't Hilary. I didn't do my research, I knew nothing about him. I'm not proud of that, at all. All I knew was all the fundies thought he was good...I grew up fundie....was fundie until about 3 years ago....so I thought he couldn't be "that" bad. Now, the more I read about him & the more he opens his mouth (or tweets :my_confused:) the more sick to my stomach I am that someone like that is running our country....and that I was part of the population that thought it was a good idea. Huge mistake. I'm mad at myself for not thinking for myself and doing a little research before making such a big decision. BTW......when did he laugh at someone mocking disabled people? I believe it.....it's just....this is the first I've ever heard of it and THAT is a new low. There is NEVER a reason for that. EVER.

Trump himself mocked a reporter with a disability.   Idk what the reporter's diagnosis is but you can see malformations in his arms and hands.  Trump actually moved his hands to mimic the reporter's.  Disgusting.

(Sorry if this is entirely obvious to everyone else, but what are 45 and WH?)

What Rubyrei said.  Also, it's kind of a thing to use 45 instead of Trump here.  In a "he who should not be named way", just merely our 45th president.

Legal...no problem. My mother's sister jumped through the appropriate hoops and earned US Citizenship. My mother didn't/wouldn't. The repercussions could have completely fucked me. I didn't even know she was "undocumented" until I sat down for a security clearance interview with DSS. Imagine my shock when the investigator tells me there's no record of my mother having any sort of legal right to be/stay in the US. She was from Cuba...I was working as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion designer. My entire career could have been sunk right there.

So...if you can't or won't get your shit straight...I don't feel sorry for you. The kids who were brought here, yes, I think they should have a path to citizenship...the adults who knew better...no.

Dwreck's lashing out at LGBTQ reminds me a lot of my uncle...who is so far in the closet he can see Narnia and he will never come out and be himself because he's a republican.

Now I love Nate and Jeremiah so Derick can go screw himself.

I am over feeling sorry for Derick because his dad died and his mom got sick. We all deal with the pain and suffering that comes with being human. We feel bad but we keep going because there is no alternative. Nothing Derick has gone through, or is going through, is unique. His pain is not more important than anyone else’s and he shouldn’t get a pass no one else gets. I don’t even think it has anything to do with him being a jerk. This is just who he is and he will never grow if people make excuses for his behavior.

You could be describing my boyfriend's brother. Seriously. He's a bully, has decided he doesn't like me, and when their mom became terminally ill he lashed out at me in the craziest ways - he called and told me he and his wife wanted nothing to do with me ever again, then followed it up with a massive ass chewing the morning of her funeral. And last month he sent me a nasty text that was all about what a bad person I am because I dared to stand up for myself when he attacked me last. Yet his brother and father aren't capable of even saying, "you don't have to like her, but you do need to treat her with respect". They know he's being an asshole but just can't seem to say "Enough". While life throws us the death of a parent, it doesn't give us the right to be assholes to everyone we don't agree with.

@mollysmom: Again, no right to vote from my side, but I also thought this election was very, very difficult. I don't know what I would have done had I needed to vote.

Watching Bush II get elected already gave me chills because I really detest dynasty politics. Then Bush III ran and I mentally prepared to put my head in the toilet. Then Hilary ran and I was even closer to the head-in-the-toilet scenario. When I learned Trump was running, I honestly found it funny for a while, for the sheer entertainment value. Then, I became increasingly startled by the utter incompetence of that man and briefly considered running for President myself before I realized that I couldn't. After that, I disengaged from the process entirely and thought to myself that either this is a fast-moving train wreck, or it's a slow-moving train wreck, but it is train wreck either way... I am a very optimistic person though, so I take all of this with a grain of salt and take comfort in knowing that history really is a spiral. :):)

My dad former Army and always voted Republican before Trump saw that and was so pissed off. He was already having trouble voting for someone who had 5 deferments for the same war my dad had to go fight in. Then he mocked a POW. What John McCain went through? What the other men went through in those places were horrible. Mocking the disable (I have muscle spams one or both arms shake at times, or my foot or head still working on the cause but it just comes and goes), insulting women and racist comments only made it easy for my dad to decide not to vote for him.

I'm reading the Goodreads reviews now, seems like a great book. Definitely written for devout Christian women, but sound advice.
