I do think some people are worse at languages and they will have a harder time, but yes, they should have picked up more than they seem to have.

Is this a good time to point out that this family supports a political party that wants to restrict immigration to those who already know English before they come into this country?

As someone not naturally talented at languages I promise it can be a problem.  That being said, you do learn more if you try, and the amount of time they were there they should have learned some.  Immersion is way better than classes for those of us who are not naturally talented.

With immersion, it does tend to just happen.  Vs taking a class.  I worked in an office that spoke Japanese 75% of the time.  I had to talk to the patients somehow and I asked my coworkers to write down certain sentences that were imperitive to making sure I did the job well.  That list expanded, I got pretty good at proper pronunciation and my Japanese patients appreciated it so much!  We would teach each other too, they helpled me talk to them and I helped them with english words for everyday living.  I miss it!

I'm a big Duolingo fan - practise every day for 15 minutes, it's fun and really doesn't require any previous knowledge or experience, and you'll be able to have a basic conversation in 3 months tops. And that's without even being in the country. I just don't buy the "they're not naturally talented at languages" excuse - not motivated to learn is more likely.

Ha, yeah, thats one of the things I do too, just to keep myself fit whenever I do not use the language..

And I do agree, some people have harder times, and sometimes it also depends on the language. I had a really hard time with Italian, for some reason, even though it would be the most obvious language for me to learn besides english, just due to the amounts of italians that visit my country. But for some reason, I did not pick it up as easily

Though, to be fair, and that is a big point (and no offense to all Italians here :/ ) - I just do not like the language as much, so it was a lot harder for me to learn it. But i still figured it out, and got help from my colleagues, and I was on the phone for 3/4 hours daily with italian clients, and writing mails back and forth. I had a colleague sitting next to me who loved Italian and always complained that my pronounciation was somewhat flaky (apperantly i had a spanish accent before speaking spanish), but then again he did not like english as well as I did, and also didn't speak it as well. On another note, when I started my spanish course, everybody thought I was fluent in italian, because apperantly I had an italian accent. Go figure...

Point being, if you decide to be a missionary in a spanish speaking country, you'd think you have enough motivation to learn the language..

I think language learning is easier if you like talking to people. The more gregarious you are , the easier it's going to be.

I like languages, but am less motivated to converse with strangers, even in English, which obviously impedes the language-learning somewhat. I could imagine that Jill, especially, was wary of leaving the safety of her immediate home area in Danger! America! If she was also dealing with other things, that may also have affected her motivation to socialise.

That's speculative, but I could imagine it.

Frankly, with the amount of blatant falsehoods the Duggars DELIBERATELY spread about various peoples who aren't living Duggar-approved lives (LBGTQ, women who choose to terminate pregnancies, etc.), I don't much care about fact checking rumors against them.  They deserve to see how it feels to have falsehoods spread about you and have to defend yourself CONSTANTLY because people KEEP SPREADING it.

If the rumor is true, sucks for Derick and Jill.

If the rumor is false, sucks for Derick and Jill.

Maybe this is a tough lesson in "do unto others..."

I do kind of hate that people's measure of language ability is fluency. That's such a subjective term anyway.

Could you explain what this means? Wouldn't ability to communicate be synonymous with fluency?

Not really, you can communicate well without being what is usually considered fluent. I'd probably use "proficient" rather than "fluent" if you mean "able to communicate." By this time I'd expect some degree of proficiency from Derick and Jill, for example, but I wouldn't necessarily expect them to be fluent the way I think of fluency.

People definite fluency differently anyway. Here's an article that attempts to define different words used to denote language ability, and here's a Mental Floss article on the topic. As someone interested in learning languages I appreciated this paragraph, since I am often asked this question but my definition of being able to speak a language seems to often be stricter than others'.

Quote

Are you bilingual, trilingual, or multilingual? Or, are you a polyglot or hyperpolyglot? Perhaps you are monolingual, but aspire to learn other languages.

If you do speak one or more foreign languages, you certainly have been asked, “How many languages do you know?” This a challenging question to answer. It's rarely as straightforward as, “I speak three languages.” The response is more likely to be a tiered explanation such as, “I speak Spanish rather fluently, have an intermediate knowledge of French, and a conversational capability in German.” Does that mean that you really speak three languages or that you just have knowledge of three languages?

It's easy to imagine them miserable because Derick seems like a grade A ass hole. Yeah, they all have terrible beliefs, but Derick also lacks manners and civility.

I agree, some of the Duggar's and the Bates' give off the vibe that apart from their horrible beliefs they are nice enough people. Derek seems to go out his way to offend people and then plays victim when he gets called out for it.

He knew how hard Jill found Central America first time round and he still insisted in going back. I'm glad they are staying put Jill has her sisters around and Izzy can play with his cousin's.

Derek needs to get a job and support his wife and son's

I feel like I know more Spanish from watching La Rosa de Guadalupe on Gala than those two know. And I rarely do know what's going on with it; I just make up my own stories based on what I glean from the Spanish closed captioning.

I can always read languages better than hear them. I can pick up enough Spanish and French, though, that I'd be able to get along if I ever needed to, or had the opportunity.

I hope Izzy retains what he learned, though I guess it's doubtful.

I'm thinking the Dullards had a 2 year commitment (July -July), forcing their return to CA this past February. Additionally, because of the timing of this announcement, I tend to believe that their contract was not renewed. Most sane people would have probably waited until their contract was up before attempting to conceive, especially in an area where Zika is active.

I know they spent about half their time in the US, but they obviously were holed up a whole lot more than they were out conversing with the natives...

Jill's parents did not prepare her for the harsh realities of life in real world NWA, let alone a foreign country. Taking her to SCA was cruel on Derick's part.

My definition of fluent is being able to work a crossword puzzle in whatever language.

f the non-profit fails to file, after about 3 years their 501(c)3 status is removed.

That's it? no accountibility? They just keep the money and run?

No.  I think they have to pay back taxes on all donations and probably a hefty fine too.

That said, I really don't know what happens because when I'm volunteering on the board of a 501(c)3 they keep good accounts and file that pesky Form 990 or I resign.  I also make sure I'm indemnified before I agree to serve.

I've never had to resign and I've never had to nag about the accounts.  So far.  The non-profits I support tend to be on the level. :)

I believe directors are personally immune from suit for non profits.  That and the corporate vale would protect most directors.

Has anyone noticed the tabloids getting vicious after the Jazz tweet?!

I'm not even meaning to see it but since I've become an active FJ'er, my Google feed is everything Duggar.  : /

That's 100% NOT my understanding. I've refused to be a board member of two 501(c) boards because any sort of financial 'mishap' - whether being sued or whatever - would come back on me, personally.

Thanks, I'll have to look into it again, I looked in once like 7 years ago and don't remember all the details.  Sorry.

I don't believe they had any contract whatsoever. I think shit hit the fan JImbob put out the call to his friend MIke Schadt.......he said ya send the kids over here we'll find something for them to do.  Derick was NOT an integral asset to their ministry. He was a fill in, guy that just tagged along. There is no way on God's green earth they were there as a dependable , reliant full time missionaries. Their continuous bouncing back and forth just proved they did as they wished.

They had full time team there year round. They had locals also working with the ministry. They did nothing but tag along and help out with whatever was already scheduled.  They were just extras to just help organize and drive in the incoming groups of teens and young adults doing their 2 week feel good missions.  I think that is why they bounced around a lot in the beginning filling in where they had room.

They were not paid by the ministry I am pretty sure. They were not full time staff but had to raise funds just like the kids who pay their 950 US funds for a 2 wk stay.  This was a bull shit missionary adventure for them.

The same can be said for some groups like YWAM......you can stay as a guest for a short period, like a few days......but if you want to join in for any length of time you pay.  And if you join staff you are committed to pay all your living expenses, but you are not on your own schedule to jet off whenever you want you are there for a contracted time. And your time is not your own. It belongs to the program.

That was my fist clue they were only there as long term visitors. Derick had no real function at all down there.

There was NOTHING he did down there that he could not do at home through his local church or on his own time after work.....if he had a job.   In fact he would be required to have more education, and experience if he did run anything out of a church to get paid as a full time employee........this whole missions thing was just a fake fake  fake  way to get out of the country.

They take advantage of people by not disclosing anything. They take advantage of people not being familiar with how missions are run.  They are rogue grifters that use ministry or missions as a guise to do absolutely nothing. It is a rip off. A scam. And very very dishonest.

Yes and no.

You have to be very careful to make sure that you are personally indemnified financially.  Eh, it is a standard form.  Legitimate 501(c) 3s know about it.  Mickey Mouse operations do not.

It is not perfect protection if the org is sued, of course.  As members of the IBLP BoD have learned.

If you are ever asked to be on a BoD be cautious.  Walk around the whole thing carefully.  And if you agree to serve then FFS DO YOUR JOB and never - ever - rubber stamp anything!

I was going to post something similar but saw someone on the previously blog link stated it perfectly

"According to Charity Navigator, they only file an IRS 990-N which means that they reported that they took in less than $50k a year.  Falling under that limit pretty much exempts you from most detailed reporting requirements (though you can still look up their 990-N directly on the IRS site)."

From that quote from P-TV - the bit about their poor language skills and this bit below (my bolding) makes more sense than the Jazz issue being a final straw.  SOS is in the business of misscations far more than helping people in developing countries and digging wells.  They probably make a lot of money off those short-term missions.

Totally agree with you - SOS dabbles in missionary tourism, maybe they saw the Dillard's as free advertising for new customers, instead they got an ad for how terrifying shower curtains are in CA. You'd think though that on the show they would have mentioned SOS more, maybe the company also didn't like that the Dillard's made it seem they were on their own in this.

Yes but they need to actually pay for the insurance policy for that to happened. And if there is actual wrong doing, the policy will only cover defense costs.
