I'm a bit surprised ALERT took your neighbor if he was caught with a joint but I'm sure they tried to reprogram him.

However, I'm really surprised they took him back several times for reprogramming.  He might have being a corrupting influence on all the other ever so Godly cadets!

The ALERT application form asks all sorts of awkward questions.

Heavens no.  That's spanking not beating.  It's just "training."  Even if you kill a child by your method of discipline.

I think they want to know if the candidate has been seriously physically or sexually abused.  Given the ways their twisted minds work, they would see abuse the result of the victim being a sinner.

I think adding the capital F makes Fuckface a proper noun, thereby allowing it to replace a given name. Therefore, I believe Velociraptor is correct is her usage.

My guess is some of those questions determine what other types of lectures you attend or which unit you're put into. If they only took perfect fundy kids, they'd not be spreading the Word! I also don't know how much the program or questionnaire has changed, this would have been around 15 years ago. They were hoping my brother would go as well, since we'd do summer camps as groups, but my military parents were interested at all in ALERT.

I don't think he got back into drugs, or had the chance, they got very strict and decided he could hang out with his friends only at their house. Hot Topic emo phase? Off to ALERT before it can take seed and grow, he was a rebellious, push the limits sort of teen and I think they were just doing the best they could.

I knew you were trying to decide which route to take regarding ASL classes. I think you'll enjoy it and find that you like practicing. You'll discover people who know sign language in the most unexpected places. There are ASL MeetUp groups in many cities. If you find one, it's good practice and a nice way to meet people in many different situations. Good Luck!

Maybe it's a trick question? Anyone who answers yes isn't acknowledging their role in "asking for it." You weren't beaten, you were being trained. You weren't molested, you were being immodest/seductive.

I can't remember where I saw it earlier - but has anyone brought up the rumor that he Dillards were actually fired from SOS due to bad publicity? WTFundies or something had it. tbh I kinda believe it..... "we're super poor and unsafe and in danger of being mutilated for jewelry" doesn't do much to say that SOS supports/protects their missionaries.

Yes it was brought up here. I think it may have originated here, I believe there was a poster who has a friend "in the know" and they told us what said friend said. Of course, as with anything said in the internet with no proof, take it with a grain of salt, but most people on here thought it was quite plausible they did get fired.

I think that's what "explain" implies.

Without minimizing how absolutely horrific it is for girls in the cult, I really also shudder to think about how traumatic and difficult sexual abuse must be for boys in the cult, since masculinity and homophobia are such central parts of the belief system.
