I don't think I would have though of the SS connotation personally. It made me think of SS Dillard and how it kind of sounds like a navy ship.

It's the rats and sinking theme surrounding the family just now... ;)

I feel like double initials being something like SS is no big deal. With two letters, the chances are just too great of it being accidental.  My initials are a common medical abbreviation, and while occasionally annoying, it's not a big deal.

Now when it's three, then it's something of note. If your kid's initials are like KKK, you knew what you were doing.

Yes,it does sound like a Navy ship. Most people call me by a common variation or nickname of my full name.My mother claimed she did not believe in nicknames...all four of us have names that can be shortened.I was at work, and has recently transferred to another dept,we got our pay stubs, the team leader..is like..this is you??The pay stub has my full name just like my license etc etc...really not much different.

HarryPotterFan,my mother grew up in Germany during WW2.They were not Jewish, but she remembered when friends or neighbors, who were...disappeared.She was raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather was a banker, and he had belonged to the Socialist Party...he disappeared..for 3 days..for questioning. Her uncle died on the Russian front,he was 23.My son saw a photo of the whole family..he was in uniform,my son is like...He was a Nazi???And then I honestly admitted both sides of my heritage, neither are winners,a friend asked me what did my mother think of it?I was offended. But I am sorry, for all of it.My mother was born in 1928.

Oh,and a friend of my aunts told of how she was going to use her daughters Hebrew name as her given name, until she realized the initials.A.S.S.

Two years ago, I wouldn't have batted an eye. Given the current resurgence* of white supremacist extremism in the US, I'm extra sensitive to it. Jill probably doesn't know what the SS was, but Derrick should. I don't think they're malicious, just clueless as always.

*Yes, I know the white supremacists have been there all along, but they rightfully existed on the margins of society. They are reentering the mainstream now it's disturbing.

Considering their other kid is named Israel, I highly doubt the initials are intended as some neo nazi naming scheme.

They are such assholes. I hope a gang of Holocaust survivors kick their asses.

... is there a super secret Underground Holocaust Survivor Fight Club I can pay to make this happen? Because nothing would give me greater joy than to see a Holocaust survivor shoving their foot up Jim Bob's ass. :pb_lol:

@melonI'm not sure I fully understand. Did your friend ask what your mother thought about it all in a rude or accusatory manner?

I sure as hell bloody hope so!! I can ask my grandma, but if it's super secret she might not tell me. I'd pay to see that too. Maybe she can do it. She stays in shape!

Jilly muffin had her "baby sprinkle" at Olive Garden tonight.

I've been noticing lately how raggedy the littler girls are dressed now, very second hand hillbilly. At least they made an effort to have them look nice when they were on 19kc.

Baby sprinkle?  Sounds like something that happens during a diaper change, if you're unlucky.

I used to think only boy babies did that. Then I learned better. My first-born is a girl and she sometimes made a huge mess "that way" during diaper changes when she was a baby. My mom always called it "The Fountain of Youth". :pb_rollseyes:

What on Earth is a 'baby sprinkle'?

A mini baby shower, usually for all the babies after the 1st. The idea behind it is it is much smaller than a shower and usually more practical gifts, like diapers and such.

They aren't really done in my circle of friends or family but they are quite popular in some areas I believe.

I'm Jewish. My family came to the US well before World War II, and we aren't German, but my aunt married a German man. His father did fight in World War II for the Germans, but he was a conscripted Pole who had nothing to do with Nazis, and managed to have great luck and got captured by Allied troops two weeks after he got to the front lines. He spent the rest of the war in a POW camp, and settled down in a quiet village in Germany with a pretty local girl after the war because his hometown was destroyed.

Honestly, it was kind of cool knowing people who fought for the "other" side or were alive at that time. I did a project on Nazi propaganda films in high school, and I got to interview some of my aunt and uncle's neighbors who lived through Nazi Germany and could tell me about seeing the films of Leni Riefenstahl in "traveling" movie theaters that went from village to village. I will mention that most, if not all, of these people had and have absolutely no ill will towards Jews or anyone else; they just wanted the war to be over and watch movies.

I think saying they shouldn't call him Samuel Scott because of the initials being ss is pretty far reaching. Yes, they do have a negative connotation, but surely he won't be the first person in the world with a first name and middle name beginning with S? Geeze.

If they called him Terrence Umberto Richard Dillard ....
THEN complain about his initials. But SSD is fine.

This baby sprinkle business really bugs me and I can't put my finger on why.  Perhaps it's because the Dullards seemingly don't pay for anything themselves.  Are they going to have a sprinkle for each of the 20 kids they have?

If they had a full baby shower each time I would consider that a problem. But if family or friends want to throw a tiny party to celebrate a new baby and offer small gifts like diapers or a cute little outfit? I don't have as much of a problem with that.

@DogalogI do agree with you, but I also see why it was commented on. The Duggars and Dillard's aren't exactly known for respecting Jewish culture or history.

I had a good education, and despite everything I've learned about the Nazis, WW2, and the events leading up to the war, I've never heard of SS being or meaning anything. Honestly, when I hear SS I think of secret service. Even in the secular world, initials don't come up that often, and as someone who HAS been made fun of for my initials (BFG like the Big Friendly Giant, my by brother who I never got along with) I don't think these initials should be a dealbreaker for the name.

Since Anna is due soonish as well, why wouldn't they have a double baby sprinkle for them both. They are both having boys too

I don't think theres a big risk of people calling him SS anyway. It's not like AJ or something where it's a common nickname. People are more likely to say his initials as SD or SSD which to me are both just types computer storage devices.

the short answer

yes

I can see why people are concerned about the initials, but also agree with @TuringMachine in that I doubt he'd be called SS as a nickname. It'll be Sam/Sammy same as with every other Samuel.

I'll admit I'm a little BEC  but Jill having a sprinkle irritates me too. It's another boy and Israel is only 2. I'm trying to get past it but since neither Jessa nor Anna have had sprinkles it reeks a bit of special Jillymuffin syndrome.
