Mr. Wolf had his colonoscopy without anesthetic. Bounced out without a care in the world. I was out, couldn't wake up and threw up for 2 days. Never agan, and that didn't count the disgusting stuff I had to drink beforehand, which leaves you glued to the toilet.

My ex used to talk about how it was no big deal, but he took most things in stride (including our marriage). But I witnessed that glued to the toilet thing and him holding his nose drinking a gallon of that nasty solution, and I just couldn't do it. I started once to prep and gave up after one dose of the poo inducing liquid.

I believe care dictates 3-5 years, depending on your father's history.  Clean exams with no history is 5 years for those in the 50+.  It might be worth calling your primary care doctor and asking that question.

Normal screening age starts at 50 according to my doc, who steadfastly harassed me for ten years until I did the FIT last year. My ex husband was diagnosed at 49, so this didn't help him any. Turns out he was in the number one demographic for colon cancer (Black males), and screening should begin earlier for this group.

It was due to my positive FIT and family history that bumped me to the front of the line....but I had great results that baffled the doctors. :P I am fortunate. ;)

Yay! My FIT was negative.

Sorry, I can't make this textbox go away!

I had my first pap with an OBGYN when I was 18 for birth control purposes. I did not have a GP and I pretty much was figuring all this out on my own so I figured a gyno was where I was supposed to go. I had 3 normal yearly paps until one year it was abnormal. I had a colp done and even that showed abnormal cells. Since I was young my doc was comfortable with the wait and watch approach. 6 months later my repeat colp was normal (yay!). Perhaps being young it wasn't worth the stress however, through all this I learned that my mom had her hysterectomy after I was born because of pre-cancerous cell changes. I also learned one of my aunts had a LEEP procedure for abnormal cells. If I hadn't had this experience I might never have learned that I am at a higher risk. I will gladly go and get a pap every year if that means they catch the cells changes before they turn into cancer.

Ohhhh, I've had a colposcopy, and they are not fun. My cells turned out to be normal, but man, the memories of "Hey! Let's scrape a BUNCH of cells off your cervix!" They recommended my fiance come to the appointment with me because it would hurt to sit for a day, and he would have to drive me home. They were right.

Actually for me the colp was pretty easy. I didn't even feel it when he scrapped my cells with the scalpel thing. I did make my husband come though because I was scared, and good thing because while it was painless besides minor cramping I do get lightheaded afterwards.

You're very lucky! I've talked with a few friends who've had it done. We've all had different stories, but the one that stood out to me was a few had the medication put on the cervix first before the scraping to numb things up. Mine was put on after the procedure for faster healing purposes.

You know what?  I just remembered, they have improved the 'fecal testing', in the past few years.  They have started to rely on this testing more, now that they are seeing a high success rate, it was in the 90+%, but I don't remember exactly what it was.  I think they have been changing the time, between colonoscopies, based on this information.  Are you saying you have to ask for the test?  Your doctor doesn't 'suggest' it to you?  Hmm, that's a little different....wouldn't work for me. :)

@Whoosh here is a link to the FIT information, this is the current testing being used here, it's basically an improvement to the Fecal test, with far more accurate results.

Very sincere thank you for the info.  My situation is that my dad had minor issues and there is no other family history, so HIS doctor recommended my sis and I both have a colonoscopy at 40.  I just figured my Dr would let me know when to do it again, but your post made me realize that the circumstances surrounding it all (new to dr, she never got specific info about my dad, etc) means it might have fallen through the crack so to speak.  Ba dum bum...

I have an appointment with my GP in March and will ask about it.  It is quite possible that after seeing my very clean colon on film they decided I didn't need another test until the standard testing starts at 50.  Hey - a girl can dream.

Anyhoo - I am one who does go in for the recommended screenings, etc. but enough about my colon!

When I woke up on my last one I asked the nurse who was sitting with me with a laptop if she had pictures she could show me and she said "on the internet" and I'm like NOOOO I mean of me..lol she showed me a pic of a kernel of corn..love your rimshot @whoosh :pb_lol: You have to love someone who goes into the medical field and chooses to do this sort of work. And with that I'm heading to the prayer closet, although I do love my doctors and nurses who do what they do to keep us healthy. :my_biggrin:

I actually had a doctor refuse to do a Pap smear even when I was having problems. He said that if I was really a virgin (I was) there was no need. And I was like.... Then why am I still having problems? Find out what's wrong with me dammit!

Well that's dumb. How did he not know you can have problems and be a virgin?

Looking back, he might have been trying to goad me into saying I wasn't a Virginia. Doctors stopped believing me about 7 years ago. Every time I get a new doctor they ask me like... First it'll be like, "you pregnant?" And after being told I'm virginal, 10 minutes later they'll ask "ok, and when was the last time you had sex?"

At some point at one appointment I snapped that I masturbated quite frequently and they gave up.

I get that there are some people who lie about their sex life, even to the gynecologist, but if my doctor said that crap to me, I'd bite his/her head off.

I've had similar experiences. Every time I went to the hospital I had to get a pregnancy test even though I told them I was a virgin. I understand why they do it. People lie about their sexual activity and then the hospital is liable if they are in fact pregnant. But I still don't like getting poked if I didn't need to.

EXCEPT I got married and became sexually active and got an IUD. They told me if I couldn't feel my strings anymore to come in and make sure it was still in the right place. Well I had a really really sharp cramp out of nowhere and it hurt for a few hours and I was nervous something happened, and I also couldn't feel my strings anymore. So I called for an appointment. I get there and basically have to beg this time for a pregnancy test. Whaaaa? Getting pregnant with an IUD still in place is super dangerous. Still not sure why I had to talk to two nurses, a doctor, and a lab tech before they would give me one.

I wonder what the next topic title will be, I assume when we need a new threads we'll  still be discussing Pap smears and poop, with little to nothing about Joshley.

Pap smears, poop and Josh.   What's off topic?   They're all 3 in a category I wouldn't wish on anyone.  Lol.

25 even if you're sexually active here. You get a letter from the government on your 25th brithday telling you to go (to the family doctor, not the gynea).

I have a long family history of colon cancer, so while I haven't been advised to follow up every few years, I did have to have a colonoscopy as a teen.

Warning: pathetic, embarrassing, graphic, disgusting, humilating, why-would-you-tell-someone-this horror story ahead.

  Hide contents

So it came time for the prep, and my mom brought me a 2 gallon jug of unsweetened iced tea and told me to drink it quickly... I basically chugged it. Not a good idea. An intense sweat came over me, my started to feel like I was going to pass out. I was so hot that I started to take my shirt off, but then started to vomit all over myself, didn't have the will to stop throwing up, fell over, mostly naked into shallow puddle of my own vomit which covered almost the entire bathroom floor, and groaned to my mom for help. I was too weak after that so my mom helped me into the nearby tub and cleaned up the floor for me. Moms are great.

And then when I had the actual procedure, I woke up several times... I'm sure there are many other colonoscopies in my future; wish me luck.

For anyone whose double-jointed: apparently anethesia sensitivity can be a side effect of doublejointedness.

I'm waiting on an appointment coming through for my second colonoscopy. Last one diagnosed me with severe pancolitis, but they're not sure if it's Crohn's or ulcerative colitis.

I'm hypermobile and woke up from the sedation too. I didn't know that last time though, but will make sure to tell them this time! I can remember them taking some of the biopsies and watching it all on the screen...

I recently had a colonoscopy (I'm 22 btw) and it wasn't bad at all.  Of course, the prep wasn't fun, but hey, that's life.  It's not the worst thing in the world and I would do it again with out hesitation if need be.  As for pap smears, I've been on birth control pills since I was 15, and I only just got my first pap smear this year.  So you definitely don't need a pap just for birth control. My gyno said she starts paps at age 21.

22 seems awfully young for a colonoscopy. I'm sure YMMV, but I just couldn't even finish the prep. FIT was a godsend for me.

I had my first gyne visit in my teens because of irregular periods, turns out I had polycystic ovaries.

It depends what it is for - routine screening or investigating a problem. I had my first colonoscopy at 21 and was subsequently diagnosed with Crohn's disease after 6 awful months of problems.

I had a colonoscopy at 39 due to some concerning symptoms.  I didn't mind the prep itself as it felt nice to be a bit lighter (sorry for the TMI)  What killed me was not being able to eat anything afterwards that evening prior.  Jello and popsicles didn't cut it.  Turns out they found a polyp, but it just needs to be watched.

Regarding Pap smears, I had my first one at 18. Was still a virgin and ended up going to the gynecologist because my period lasted a month and I was freaked out. The NP I visited was a bit overly cautious (to put it nicely) and made me have a Pap smear, gave me birth control to help regulate, and then refused to refill my prescription unless I came in for a Pap smear every year.

I was so jazzed when I finally started visiting a new doctor and she said I would only have to have one once every three years. Started to get a bit tired of the ol' "lie back and think of Matt Damon" every year.

So, am I right in thinking that the reason you all go to the gyneacologist and they do pap smears left right and centre just so you can get some birth control is that you don't have GP's or family doctors, so they want to grab hold of you while they have you and do anything preventetive that they can?

Whereas here pretty much everyone has a GP and goes to them first for pretty much everything, including teenagers needing birth control for the first time, domestic violence problems, childhood illnesses (vaccines are done through a free service and at school, but can be done at the GP's if the parents wish), STI testing, all preventitive screening tests etc

I think it varies from community to community and according to individual preference.  Some women choose an obgyn as their primary care physician, others choose an internal medicine specialist, others choose a "family doctor," etc.

I haven't seen an obgyn since I went to my last post-partum check-ups-- about 25 years ago.  I mostly see an internal medicine MD but she will refer me to specialists as needed.  Also, since my MD practices almost an hour away, I will go to a clinic near my house for things like bladder infections and such.   My MD may not call herself a GP but she does the job of one.

Regarding the colonoscopy prep, if you divide the amount of liquid by the amount of time they tell you to drink it, it comes out to just a few ounces over 15 minutes. Makes it less unbearable. I wonder if you could mix it with vodka.:penguin-wink:

When Josh comes home, will we have a new thread combining the two of them, Smuggar rises again, or something? Maybe there will be 3 threads so we can keep A ad J separate.
