Orange is the New Black

Anyone else watching this? It's the latest Netflix original. I've been binge-watching it this weekend and it is so good. Huge female cast, diverse characters, and a trans actress playing a trans woman. (Lots of lesbian content too if you're into that.) It's gotten great reviews so far--[link=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/orange-is-the-new-black_b_3574249.html]here's[/link] one--and I really can't recommend it enough. I've been surprised at just how much I've been enjoying it.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this show! I am watching season 3 now. I haven't waited so impatiently for a show to come out in a long time. I am actually starting to like Pennsatucky too. And Boo is growing on me. I love watching the goody two shoes grow some balls. LOL

I am thrilled with OITNB season 3 so far, with the exception of Piper's character who just annoys me. The back stories are great this season, without spoiling, Leanne's backstory was a nice surprise! Susanne, Poussey, and Taystee's stories are always great. Red rocks!

I'm sad now with only 3 episodes to go :|

Did anyone else finish the season? I need to discuss!!!

I think Taystee is my favorite. I also love the Penntasucky and Boo relationship that started developing last season.

I'm making my response to HPF super small because the spoiler alert thingy isn't showing up on the bar to post a reply! If anybody else knows how I could type in the code, please let me know!!

I did, I did! Ditto Pennsatucky!!

I loved the first 2 Seasons and can't wait to start watching Season 3! We watch a lot of sports at my house so between the Stanley Cup, NBA Finals and Womens World Cup the TV is tied up. Will definitely start watching the next week or two to get caught up.

Does Netflix release the whole season at once? Interesting that they wouldn't try to drag it out.

They do release the whole season at once. I finished it, but I tend to make grouchy comments about my TV shows, even if I like the show, so I'm keeping mum for now.

Meeeee tooooo! I binge watched but for fear of spoiling others will keep quiet for now. But can someone please decide when we can all chat properly? I have so many questions. Eg Bennet? Nicky? Just for starters.

I finished it after binge watching sunday. I liked it, but kind of felt like it didnt go anywhere. I'm not really sure where the privatization bit or the Jewish bit is going.

I'm actually really interested in the privatization aspect. We have a large number of those private prisons in this country, and I've also heard those rumors that Victoria's Secret uses prison labor to make their wares (haven't found definitive proof of that though; could be a rumor on the street).

The kosher meal part sounds about right, from what I've heard. Those meals are supposed to be better than the usual prison slop, and religious freedom is supposed to be upheld in this country. Watching private industry push back against religious freedom was interesting.

I'm sad that Sophia is still in the SHU, though. Terrible place to leave her.

I haven't posted in this thread before, but I am HUGE OitNB fan and I just finished season three last night. Overall, I liked season three because of continued character development and the new back stories. I agree that Leanne's was a nice surprise and makes a lot of sense. If you asked me in season 1, I would never imagine I would be Team Boo or Team Pennsatucky, but I'm both! Loved the (hot) addition of Ruby Rose! So glad Larry was nowhere to be found.

I thought this season was kind of soft, after last season with Vee, but I still liked it. I mean, Litchfield isn't a max security prison, so I don't think we should expect a prison riot every other week. The violence is a bit softer but still there.

I'm only four episodes in, but if those who have finished the season want to discuss it someone can make another thread to do so - just label the thread title so it's clear that it contains spoilers.

If you haven't finished watching Season 3 you should probably look away now.

So many questions:

Disclaimer: yes I know the actors involved in a couple of these questions have moved on to other projects but things could still be explained.

1. WTF Bennet? Has he really just taken off for good after proposing with gum wrappers?

2. Or was he behind the raid that took the kids in a plot to get his baby back? Or was Pornstache's mum behind it?

3. Is Nicky gone for good? Without even an investigation?

4. Are they really leaving Sophia in the SHU?

5. All the bunk beds and lines of new inmates - next season is all about overcrowding?

6. Alex - dead or alive? Does anyone really care?

7. Does anybody like Piper? I think the show could lose that character and no one would care.

Probably, with a heavy continuance of the corporations are bad, mmkay, plot line they started this season.

I did notice that the top bunks don't have any rail guards. It's almost like between that and Sophia being in the SHU, MCC is begging for a lawsuit.

I KNOW SERIOUSLY WTF BENNET!! I'm so pissed at him for just leaving Daya and the baby. And that proposal was so sweet. Ugh I wanna smack him.

I hope Nicky and Sophia come back, they're great characters and I love them.

And just WTF Piper, she's gone insane. Her whole underwear scheme and trying to make everyone fear her and setting up Stella like that. "trust no bitch" is right.

These two are probably my least favorite characters on any show I watch right now. Piper's complete lack of self awareness makes me want to throw things. Alex was less irritating than that, but I'm ashamed to admit that her too light and overplucked eyebrows drive me to distraction. If they matched her hair color it would be less of a problem for me. /shallow

I wonder if this season isn't the last we'll see of Bennett. Seems like some more drama can be had by bringing him back.

I love, love, loved Suzanne's story line for this season, and am happy for her. Ditto Brook.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Lorna's storyline with her new husband, what with the Christopher issue. I'm not a fan of her, and I hope she and her husband go down for that crime.

I hope that Daya's baby is okay. I wish her meddling mother hadn't insisted the baby be kept.

I can't wait to see what happens with the new inmates showing up to an empty prison.

I think Bennett will be back. The experience at the apartment wasnt really enoughfor him to run away from his entire life, even if he wanted to disavow the baby or Daya.

I cant stand Alex or Piper. In the beginning they were trying (I think) to have some form of a love story. Now its just manipulative and violent. Not a good thing.

I cant watch a season about how privitizing prisons is bad. We get it, the food sucks and they 're packing people in... but this is getting stupid.

I'm curious about what will happen with the Bennet storyline. I want to yell at him and slap him, but if he doesn't show up and claim the baby she'll probably end up in foster care. I know the whole situation with Cesar would freak anyone out, but seriously shouldn't that make him even more protective of the baby? Shouldn't he want to keep his baby out of that home?

Also it was so shitty of Daya's mom to lie to Mendez's mom like that. Just, ugh. Tell the truth, it's still your right to keep the kid. Stop meddling you shit.

I really don't like who Piper has become, but I'm really intrigued to see where she ends up with her "I'm a bad bitch" attitude. Poor Stella. I hope she comes back (and Nicky and Sophia).

And there's also the complete chaos of all the COs deciding to leave.

I liked season 3 for the background stories, character development, and new relationships (Boo and Pennsatucky, love the comradery), and I'm excited for season 4- but I hope they take it more places next season than they did this time, and I'm not sure just how far the privatization of the prison is going to take that.

I do think that there may be some damage done when the established inmates come back to find the new inmates taking their beds and stealing their shit. Although, there are no guards to process anybody! what a clusterfuck!

I think Alex is dead. Or will be left for dead. I hate how lightly Piper takes the whole gang thing- she squealed on Alex to bring her back to a known location, and then just laughs off the idea that Alex could be in danger because of that. I hate Piper in general. I think the show would be a smashing success without her. She just comes across as stupid to me! Conniving, yes, but doesn't think things ALL the way through.

I read the book by Piper Kerman between Season 2 and Season 3. Everything that actually happened to Piper (and a lot that didn't, but made for a good story) was covered in the first 2 seasons. This 3rd season floundered around for me. Piper just isn't a very interesting character and she's not believable as a thug. I do like the dynamic between Red and Healy, and I like so many of the other story lines.

It makes me think of Weeds. Some seasons were excellent, some missed the mark. Did I watch every single episode? You bet. I'm a fan of Jenji Kohan, and I will continue to watch OITNB.

Oh, I will keep watching despite Piper even though the only scenes with her that were bearable were the Stella ones. The whole "fish out of water" storyline is over and the character really has nothing left now.

For me, the back stories were the highlight this season too. I never thought I would ever warm to Pennsatucky or Big Boo but that was my favourite story line. Alien porn was a very close second - cheers for Suzanne. :cracking-up:

Sort of OT, but my grandma was talking about how there are new people in charge of the retirement home where she lives, and that there are a lot of changes, like the quality of services has gone down, the food proportions are smaller (and they try to trick people by using smaller plates), and the food quality has gone way down and everyone is complaining about it. It made me think of OITNB. Also it's a Jewish retirement home so all the food is already kosher, so much for trying to pull the scheme that all those inmates tried to pull.

That's probably at least partly due to the fact that Jenji Kohan used Piper's character as a way to get the show made:

Jenji Kohan":2hrkuoac]"In a lot of ways Piper was my Trojan Horse. You're not going to go into a network and sell a show on really fascinating tales of black women, and Latina women, and old women and criminals. But if you take this white girl, this sort of fish out of water, and you follow her in, you can then expand your world and tell all of those other stories. But it's a hard sell to just go in and try to sell those stories initially. The girl next door, the cool blonde, is a very easy access point, and it's relatable for a lot of audiences and a lot of networks looking for a certain demographic. It's useful."

I loved the segment at the end - and definitely worship at the Church of Norma now. Agree with lolo3300 that Suzanne was awesome. Uzo Aduba is such a standout of an actor. I really hope she goes places once she's done with OITNB.
