I do understand the role of the liver (I've put my liver through quite a lot). What I meant is, are those funny detox diets a real thing? Or is it bad science?

Detox diets are shit. Don't do them!lol! Seriously, they are so bad for you. The "master cleanse" will get you nowhere.

And as for your last question; sometimes if you detox to quickly you will feel bad for a couple of weeks. Kind of like giving up coca cola and having a headache for a day or so.

Not scientifically true. You should feel better.

You get the coke headache from a lack of caffeine. Unless addictive substances comprise part of your daily toxin intake, you should not feel worse.

As for the lemon enzymes... they are destroyed in your stomach and never reach your intestines much less your blood stream.

Well ... thanks for that condescending metaphor, I guess. It's definitely just as good as quantifiable, peer reviewed studies.

And I'm backing away. Good luck with all of that.

How is that condescending?

Detoxing from a drug dependancy is different than the so called detoxing from a bad diet. Caffeine is a drug and that's what people get hooked on in Coke.

Okay, but in the sense that your liver does that all the time? Or the sense that it's something that happens when you drink lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper (substitute quackery of your choice) for days at a stretch?

**ETA: Cross-posted with Wolfie, who is faster than me. ;)

Yeah it does it all the time. The way I understood it in school is what you eat affects how hard the liver works to detox. It's like how different you feel if you spend a week eatIng all junk food then a week drinking just water and healthy foods. The liver doesn't have to work as hard if you eat healthier.

I don't buy the we can all be vegetarians argument, by the way.

I got awful headaches when I gave up coke.. But I drank it daily for years. I assumed my body was addicted to it. And you do detox when you give up something your body is addicted to.

Yes, you did a drug detox, same thing would happen if a person gave up coffee, they both have large amounts of caffeine. That isn't the food detox you keep insisting is why some people feel lousy even on a well thought out vegetarian diet.

My understanding is that your body is in a constant state of detox. The point of a detox diet is to remove toxins from your diet to allow your body to catch up and that seems reasonable to me.

However eating sugary maple syrup and cayenne pepper (which has a toxic oil that does not hurt us in the amounts we can reasonably ingest but nonetheless is almost entirely toxic) would not help this. I am not sold on any of the other detoxes either. I have tried to do juice fasts to detox (homemade juice from organic fruit) and they left me listless and fatigued with no benefit at the end of them. I did not even lose weight because juice calories add up.

Just for clarity's sake: I am all for putting healthy food into your body. It makes sense. But I think all of the "detoxing" stuff is bullshit until there's proof otherwise, hence my calling it quackery.

That liver question was meant to be rhetorical, I do know how my liver works. I appreciate the responses anyhow.

I don't think I went crazy on insisting anything.. Just wrote that the body does detox.

ETA: I only wrote that people can feel bad when they give up meat once...

If you don't eat you're going to be light headed, tired and irritable. Most detoxes are based on an incredibly low calorie diet. Then you have caffeine dependence. If you're used to drinking 5+ cups of coffee a day you are going to be one angry mofo when you have to deal with lack of food+caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Add to that the big blowout that a lot of people have before they begin any diet - if you're planning to 'detox' you're probably going to enjoy your last few drinks before you commit to being alcohol free for, like, forever and ever and ever. So you'll be hungover, starving, and dealing with caffeine withdrawal.

Heck, if that isn't a recipe for a miserable few days, what is?

Our livers do a great job of detoxing the body. If your liver isn't doing its job you and the ED are going to know about it pretty soon.

So eat good food - lots of veg, lots of fruit, lean cuts of meat, plenty of legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, etc. Enjoy a glass of wine and something sweet a few times a week. Exercise for 30 minutes a day. Get at least seven hours sleep. Take a few minutes to relax every now and then and appreciate what a great world we live in.

Then take the money you spend on stupid detox products and buy yourself a gorgeous bottle of perfume or a ticket to the opera. Much better for you.

Because you sound like you're talking to a four year old. The human body is not a pond with trash in it, and you can't actually compare the biological functions in any meaningful way. It's not even particularly accurate because a body of water doesn't automatically become "toxic" because there's trash in it; it depends on what harmful substances are actually introduced.

I believe the question posed was asking for a specific, scientific definition on what it means for your body to be "toxic" and how lemon juice or any other substance can detoxify it. Not a preschool-level metaphor :?

here is what you wrote:

I don't want to cause any craziness.. Just voicing my opinion on this, and I by no means think everyone should be a vegetarian.

However, I don't agree with the idea that certain regions should eat a certain way. We all have the same biological makeup (intestine, stomach, etc.) and therefore, I believe, to a point we can all eat relatively the same. I don't think someone can not eat a vegetarian diet because they come from a place like greenland. It might be related to allergies to plant protein (kale, spinach) or a lack of desire to be vegetarian. They tiredness and lack of energy when giving up meat often comes from detoxing. But like I said, I by no means think everyone should give up meat! It is a personal choice!

Well, sorry it sounded like it was directed at a four year old. I didn't mean for it to sound that way. And, I am not a professional and don't claim to be, so I am not going to give you some scientific answer. Also, I don't really feel like finding links.

Here's another one that just made me :angry-banghead:

Please pray for me right now! I'm so tired of people treating this as if it was a football game or popularity contest! Obamacare is now here to stay. We are barely able to pay for the rise in premiums this year & now we're going to be able to deduct less of our medical expenses.....and this is just the beginning. Wait until the whole thing is rolled out. THIS IS MY CHILD'S LIFE! Hope you're happy with your contraceptives paid for by me. Happy you think that's worth us not being able to afford seizure meds.

She doesn't even grasp what Obamacare entails. Oh, and she also agrees with states "peacefully" withdrawing from the union and demanding a full recount of votes. Oh, and she claims Obama is the new Hitler. Fuck you cousin! You father and my grandfather saw the concentration camps. Fuck you, you crazy fundie bitch! :angry-screaming: :angry-cussingblack: :obscene-birdiered:

Lol, why place the blame on contraceptives? They prevent the huge cost of pregnancy. Viagra and other erectile dysfunction therapies do... what exactly? Oh wow, some guy can jerk off. Praise Jesus. Direct your anger at your country's impotent men, crazy lady!

What gets me is that we use to be close until she married and converted to Catholicism. I know and respect a lot of Catholics, but her husband is a bat-shit crazy fundie Catholic. She homeschools, but to her credit she does have a degree in education. Just within the last year or 2 she went full on crazy. I have a strong suspicion that she wanted to have lots of children, but had to have an ER hysterectomy when her second baby was born, and she was heartsick over that. Since then, she has really gone off the deep end (not suicidal or severely depressed), and I can't stand to be around her. I have no clue what her marriage is like, so I don't know if her husband is caring loving or complete jerk or if he even played a role in how she is today. Every time I try to talk to her, she always spouts the fundie party line even if we talk about something not at all religious.

Oh, and what really pissed the whole family off is when her mother died she wanted her to have a Catholic funeral. But, her mother was Methodist and wanted her funeral to be held at her church with her minister presiding. My cousins brothers really ripped her a new one over that, and my aunt's last wishes were honored. I would never do that to my mother. My mother made her wishes known and when she died, we saw to it her wishes were carried out.

I'm sorry to make this post about me. I'm just frustrated and miss the close bond my cousin and I had and needed to vent to non-family. I'm sorry if my Catholic references offended anybody. I hope everybody understands I was speaking strictly about my cousin and her husband. Now, I'll clean my shit off the carpet. :chores-vacuum: :chores-mop:

  • 2 weeks later...

Aaarrgghhh! This may be the last straw and I may have to block her. My Catholic fundie friend is still very bitter about the election and has been flooding my fb feed with her rants for weeks. She posted this today,

MR1.jpg

Apparently she is forgetting that the history of the Catholic church is littered with oppression and violence like the Crusades, the Inquisition, St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, and the Thirty Years' War.

Edited for grammar

I have yet to see a detox that wasn't a low calorie diet combined with laxatives.

Most recent fundie facebook posts: "Israel we apologize for Obama" "I never met one veteran that enlisted to fight for Socialism." (wtf??)

Not to mention the fact that the enzymes lemons have are not "live". Enzymes are made up of combinations of amino acids. These are chemicals and are not alive in anyway.

I would call your bodies reaction to a sudden lack of caffeine withdrawal symptoms instead of detox.

I just got out of an environmental toxicology class and this discussion is fun.

I'm starting to see some that not only severely limit what you can eat (though it can be high fat) combined with tons of probiotics and fermented foods. Yep, also a combination for "cleansing."

"Right now God is sweeping the earthly kitchen floor. He's sweeping all us crumbs into different little piles (cuz we're all over). Soon, when He's got every crumb, He will sweep us all together in one big pile for the big dustpan - His Second Coming. I'm glad I'm in a pile! :)"

From a friend of a friend of my cousin:

"america is dying. as we step farther and farther away from being a democratic republic and closer to socialism and communism, i wonder when will the conservatives step up? its time to make ourselves heard. we, as Americans, and Missourians, have to do something. if you want an example of how socialism doesn't work, look at europe. under obamacare, you will be allowing a panel of people decide whether or not your grandfather is worth the 'cost' of getting the surgery he needs to continue living. this is un-American, un-constitutional, and just flat out WRONG!!!!! shame on you Justice Roberts."

And

"Saw a comment today about how someone is tired of Christians today being so 'intolerant' and how we if would all just see eye to eye and unite the world would be a better place. People, I looked and looked, but I couldn't find anywhere in my Bible that it says to be more tolerant. What I did find? "Be ye not conformed to the world, but be ye TRANSFORMED by the renewing of your minds". The country we live in is in rapid decline, because "christians" have become tolerant. We have lost sight of our first love, JESUS!!!!!! We are His body. He lives in us. We should weep at what we have become. I for one want to be remade in HIS image. I love Him. He loves me. I will serve HIM, and only Him. Selah"

Yeah, that's totally how it works, and anyway it's so much better when it's some faceless Aetna/BlueCross/United Healthcare employee deciding if you're worth the cost of that surgery.
