$26 cat litter?? Here we go again. Frugal and reasonable they are not.

I just checked prices at Safeway in Seattle.  The 25 lb box that I buy for $25.99 in Anchorage Alaska sells for $19.99 in downtown Seattle.  However, the 20 lbs of Tidy Cat is 12.99 in Seattle, vs the $13.99 in my local store.  I know that I pay an extra $2-3 for going to Safeway over Fred Meyer or Petco/Petsmart, but I have to pass Safeway to get home so I go there more often, despite the higher prices. I don't know where in Seattle they live, but things should get less expensive as they get more suburban.

They probably want it delivered to their apartment.

For Art complaining about their upbringing, All heir siblings seem to be living fine lives. She has a sister who is muslim, a sister who has a kid out of wedlock and a sister who got married in Vegas and then divorced.

Art and their partner have become part of the anti work movement and believe everything should be provided for them.

That's it. Everything should be provided for them, sums up their current online presence. I wonder if their early success with the Patreon gave them faulty illusions of grandeur, and now they don't want to try for anything normal. They seem to have moved on from the writing thing, but haven't replaced it with anything.

As people have pointed out frequently on this thread, not wanting to work at the areas you are skilled at doesn't qualify as disabled. That point seems to be lost on Artemis.

I don't blame them TBH. There's something about shlepping cat litter that is extremely annoying to me.

However, since I am not an independently wealthy person, nor does Chewy believe that Alaska is part of the US, I go to the store to purchase it when I buy other things. Speaking of which, they could order on Chewy and have it delivered for free, and pay way less.  There's a 40 lb box in my cart right now for 18.99, but nope, Chewy is still garbage who can't figure out the USPS.

I think Art needs to find a goal or a purpose.  They lived their life in one way for a long time, then spent what, 10? years couch surfing and trying to find stability? Now that they are somewhat stable, have we heard anything about plans or goals?  Most people have some idea of where/what they want five years from now - wedding, career change, new house, baby, to finish some home project or move out of their parents house, retire, to star in a community play, to swim from Florida to Cuba something. Or if 5 years is too much, what do they want a year from now? What steps are they taking to get there? Do they want to run a marathon or even to save money to eat a 3 star restaurant? Do they want to walk the steps of congress, to travel? Do they want to start a new fitness program or learn to cook better? I just feel like all of their content is stagnant.  Do they still want to finish the book?

If they need money on their patreon, they should write more. Expand from "Angry/Sad Autobiography" and create content the people want to read - read a YA book and write about how it shaped feminist through. Write essays exploring why young girls across the world have and continue to try and summon the occult through their games. Write about SOMETHING that you are actually doing vs what happened and why it was the worst thing ever.

Art has said it is mentally exhausting to write especially about their childhood. I don't knows how talented Art is, but people self publish short stories and poem books on amazon for free all the time. She could charge 99 cents for a small online poem book or at least 50 page short fiction story. Though depression can be crippling millions of people including myself who have sever forms of it get up everyday to just to the bare ,minimum of working and spaying our bills. Art needs to look in to something.

I've also thought that maybe her partner Ryann might be more toxic than Art thinks. Ryann might not be verbally or physically abusive like their last roommate, but could simply be mooching off of Art. I dont know all of Ryans medical issues. I get not being able to work in the hospital, but these two could start reading some YouTube content and building a job that way.

I am sympathetic to the cat litter thing because that is a poverty penalty. (Vimes' boots theorem anyone?)

I am healthy, employed, and have a car. I drive to the pet store and buy the 28lb bag of litter for 49.99, put it in my car, and when I get home I can lug/drag it to my basement. That's good for months. If I had no access to a car, or didn't have the money, I would be buying the 15lb bag at 33.99 and exhausting myself carrying it home. I'd be more tired and paying more for less litter, and have to go back out again to repeat the exercise much sooner. Now, are there solutions? Absolutely. Chewy, or other delivery services; cheaper and lower-quality litter; etc, etc. But the base solution to get ahead -- more money to buy litter more cheaply -- is not available.

My biggest thing with Art is no evidence of effort or interest in improving their life in any way. Not just getting a job, but going for walks or reading a new book or finding a new hobby: something that brings joy and variety into the day to day routine

I get the lightweight litter delivered by Amazon. It’s $10 for 10 lbs, and it’s like half as heavy as regular litter. And comes in a big plastic jug instead of a box Both of which are which are very helpful if you have physical limitations. They have Amazon.

@Jigsaw3 you bring up a good point with the poverty penalty. My guess is most people here (myself included) are so burned out on their incredible sense of entitlement that anything beyond asking for the cheapest of the cheap feels like a slap in the face to those who have offered help over the years - but were rejected because it wasn't the "right" help. I know I'm very much in the category of BEC with Art at this point and I doubt I'm alone in that.

I wonder if Art, possibly because of heavy family responsibilities growing up, is attracted to "needy" people.  And once in a relationship, jumps to the position of doing most of the work to keep it functioning.

See also: people with low self esteem finding partners who either need or want a lot from them because doing things for someone might mean they won't see how unworthy of love you secretly are so they won't leave.

(Disclaimer: not saying they ARE unworthy of love, of course, just that as a parentified kid they may have only ever been praised or felt loved if they made themselves useful.)

At this point it seems that Art's goal is to get qualified finally for SSI and will live off that for the rest of their lives.

How likely is that where they live? Here Art could potentially qualify for a carer's pension depending on Ryann's needs, but it's a pittance and below the poverty line.

The sense that they are isolated outside of online contact has made me wonder about that too. Being a carer can be incredibly isolating just on its own though.

A lot of Art's issues appear to be mental health related. Did they see a therapist at all after leaving?  The back pain could also be being exacerbated by sitting and not getting much exercise - I developed back pain for the first time in my life during the covid lockdowns due to that. If writing needs to go on the backburner for a bit, great - take on other paid work they can either do from home or that will get them out for a day or two if possible. One of my friends delivers leaflets - due to injury he can't do his normal work but he said getting out of the house and walking an hour or two per day keeps him sane.

I think you're right. They are now mostly into rage and anger political posting from what I can see of their social media. I still think it's a shame that they can't see the good in anything, especially after people rallied around them to prevent them from experiencing homelessness. They managed to survive with cats and selves intact, but only with the ongoing support of people with jobs.

I doubt they see how their anger affects them currently. They rail against capitalism, but rely on people who earn expendable income to help them do their laundry. They demand luxuries like home internet and Doordash because according to them poor people deserve an equal lifestyle to rich people... is this some bastardized version of socialism? They serve up increasingly banal content on their writing channel and blame their dwindling audience for their lack of success.

Fundie logic is always us vs. them in some form or fashion.

If it is a bastardized form of socialism then it is what I would refer to as " Sharpay socialism " , after this one character in the High School Musical series of Disney films .  Reading about Artemis here has brought to mind this song from High School Musical 2 . I feel though that , in response to her luxurious bourgeois tastes , which she demands of her supporters , I will post a second song from the same film .  At least this is something that Art has accomplished with their life , inspiring me , a left-wing critic , to create a new term , describing a sort of Champagne socialism  (link goes to Wikipedia article) espoused by those of the lumpen-proletariat .  I call it this , because like I said Artemis Stardust reminds me of the before mentioned Sharpay Evans , and also because the movies were marketed primarily to the Millennial generation , and their's is a corrupted sort of Millennial socialism , IMHO .

Really? This is interesting to me. Not the first part but the second. I know plenty of people who have worked all their lives in a vast array of careers without becoming disabled as a result. I do know some people who had to go on disability due to health issues but those weren't related to their jobs. They will say ANYTHING to convince themselves.

Physical therapist here so of course my sample is biased but if by hard work they mean hard physical labor it does seem to be true that many or even most people start to struggle with work-related health issues quite a while before the generally accepted retirement age. More so if night shifts are involves. Cleaning staff, all manner of builders, people who care for bedbound grown-ups... The last ten years or so they need (in my country)  to qualify for a full pension tend to be hard, painful, or downright impossible. And of the three groups only builders are pretty well-paid (though nowhere near as well as 20 years ago). No points for guessing why there's a difference.

I completely understand the point you are making in terms of long term effects of a job involving hard physical labor. And I agree in terms of the long term effects. But the way Art makes it sound just about any job is going to subject a person to disability, be it chronic or acute. I think their statement is misleading.

Perhaps I'm biased but I'm so over this anti-work movement that they've been preaching for the past four years. Are there many issues with capitalism that could be fixed? Of course. A universal basic income would be wonderful. Pension. Food. Medical care. Along with housing for all people. But I don't see that happening anytime soon. So I go off to my job every day because I need to keep a roof over my head and my family, have food on the table and medicine and utilities paid. And I don't love my job every day but I have to work. I have diabetes and frequent headaches but I have to work through those things when possible because I need to keep my job and get paid.

They ask for money but those who are giving are going out to work each day and putting themselves through the capitalist machine. I don't understand how they don't see that by now.

The way Artemis pulls out any and every excuse to not work is exhausting. Living on disability the rest of your life is not something most people aspire to, it's what they have to do as a last resort. It barely makes ends meet (if that) without anything left over for even basic treats and savings. Which is why millions wake up each day and go to work in pain. That really sucks.

The way Artemis writes this comes off as though at least 50% of people who go out and work are getting so injured on the job they have to go on disability. Yes people do get injured in workplace situations, but not in those numbers and especially not acute injuries. It reminds me of the Duggars "I Survived Roe v Wade" t-shirts. It sounds as if they are rounding up pregnant women and forcing them to terminate, but Ma Duggar just happened to slip out the back door and not get caught. It's misleading.

So it's the Labour Day Long Weekend here, and seeing that post made me think more on the relationship between unions and things like disability support and workplace safety. Because becoming injured (or worse, having a breadwinner killed) at work previously often led directly to the poorhouse unless you had an extended family that were able to support you, or look after your children while you sought work you were able to do. Physically demanding work has become less dangerous in developed countries than it was, even if there is still improvement possible in some areas. Much more regulation, compensation and disability pensions, more leisure time and originally summed up in the Eight hour day monument outside Trades Hall (side note: Chinese tour groups get group photos here , it's very lucky.)

Also I have never seen a "workers hate disabled people and vice versa" statement, so there was a bit of WTF going on there, and I'm still not entirely sure what they're trying to get at. It feels like a very first year just discovered the Socialist Alliance group at Uni statement (I am possibly old, and jaded here.)

I'm inclined to assume the wording of Art's statement was deliberately misleading because muddying the waters is the only chance they have to make anything like a point. I still wanted to say something because in political discussions and public discourse alike people currently have a tendency to talk about work as if we all have office jobs now, which leaves out a lot of people who do still genuinely struggle with wear and tear on their bodies due to their jobs.

Actually, depending on Ryann's needs, being his in home carer could be a great spot for Art.  Ryann already got SSI so it wouldn't be a huge leap from that to them being qualified to need a carer.  Art would be doing the things they already do for Ryann, and get paid to do it.  The problem with that is that it could, depending again on Ryann's needs, disqualify them from some services since Art could bring in a bigger amount than they are currently bring in.  Plus it would disqualify Art from getting SSI for themselves.  So... probably not something they would consider.  SSI may pay more than being an in home carer if their partner's needs don't qualify for many hours.  The 2 of them really should investigate it though to at least find out what options are there.

They have been involved in disability rights activism in college . I saw a video , on YouTube , that they helped to produce , concerning wheelchair accessibility on campus .  There wasn't any Socialist Alliance chapter at UCCS however.  I don't think that the Socialist Alliance even exists here in the U.S.   However , I would imagine that any Marxist group that would exist might not want to be associated with such a left communist as Artemis appears to be . They seem to be the epitome of what Lenin described , in his treatise entitled "Left-Wing Communism an Infantile Disorder"   ( link goes to copy of essay ) , given their anti-voting viewpoint .
