Some news to wake up to. I caught up on the thread now and it’s 10am here. If I calculated correctly news about Josh’s crimes (please be about money and not kids) will come at 6pm in Sweden so I have 8 hours to work and prepare dinner. See you all back here then.

Welp, after not going to bed until gone 1am and the fact I’ve been awake an hour but sat in bed reading the threads, I can tell my productivity today will be next to zero.

The usual conservative progression seems to be start with denial: it's a witch hunt! the feds are just bending to the liberal pressure. Then when it can no longer be denied they move to minimize and deflect: double standards! The dems didn't care when [insert liberal politician or actor even if the actor is like D list] did [insert something similar but likely either made up or exaggerated]. Finally when they can't deny that it was indeed something really bad we get Jesus forgave him so you need to move on.

I'd love to say I'm surprised.... But I'm not. 

On one level, hello well-overdue karma. 

On another level, I feel for the kids and his siblings (and to a lesser degree, Anna). It's one thing to have accusations etc, but arrests and charges are different thing completely.

Jim Bob and Michelle, take note. This is what happens when a tv show/publicity/politics are more important than getting real help for your troubled child and the other children he harmed. Now your other children and grandchildren will pay for your mistakes a million times over.

My first thought on hearing about this was drugs and or money laundering through the car lot.  I’m wondering if Anna’s parents will travel to Arkansas ASAP? It’s the least they can do after throwing her to  the Duggar’s ‘lions’ den.

If this is financial crimes, I do wonder if Derrick was able to piece together enough over the years that he could see this coming, which would contribute to the Dillards distancing themselves and getting their cut while they still could. Between his accounting background and the first year of law school, Derrick would definitely know the Duggars’ financial arrangements are shady and would know the legal consequences.

Eh, I think you’re giving Dillwank way too much credit. While I’m sure Derick knew Boob was shady, there’s no way Boob would have shared enough of his business dealings with Derick for him to be useful to the feds.  Besides, Derick isn’t a forensic accountant, and his main motivation was always his own best interest.

I'm about a page behind and have to go to work but just a quick note to those of you worried about Anna, Jana, Jessa...etc.  I do not understand any of you.  We're all accountable for our actions and how they affect children, regardless of how damaged we were by our past.

A lot of us have to fight against being broken by our pasts and sometimes we make the wrong decisions but we have to try.  And so do they, they have to fucking TRY for those kids and they don't.

When you form your Duggar support group don't send me an invitation.  My sympathy is reserved for the kids....I don't have an emotional basket of muffins of fuck to give to Anna and the other adults towing the party line.

Hearing is like 2am my time, so I guess I'll be playing catch-up on some breakfast snark. Like many others I'm hoping for financial crimes because it might bring down many others, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was some non-child-related sex crime (trafficking illegal immigrants, soliciting across state lines? I'm not familiar with laws over there to know what is whose jurisdiction).

I know she's far from faultless and she has a responsibility to her children, but I do feel sorry for Anna, more so than I used to anyway. (Spoiler for personal story)

I met my husband when I was 19 and married when I was 21. Our marriage has long been characterised by pressure and coercion for sex, pushing or ignoring my boundaries, and the kinds of cruel remarks that horrified my friends any time I relayed them. Even as I told others things he had said or done, I thought that they were overreacting or not giving him the benefit of the doubt because they only had my side of the story and didn't hear the conversation leading up to that point, or the way I called him on how hurtful he was being straight away, not allowing myself to be downtrodden, or the way he apologised the next day with sincerity. They didn't get what it was like for him, the victim of a genuinely narcissistic and emotionally abusive mother, or see just how far he'd already come and how much self-awareness he demonstrated that I've never seen in her. He said sorry! That's more than she's ever done. His good side was real so how could it possibly mean less than his bad side? And he was working on things, he'd made compromises, and made me well aware of the "compromises" he was making, like having less sex than he was happy with.

I first asked him to go to marriage counselling/sex therapy seven years ago when our daughter was a baby, and he didn't want to. I have been seeing my own counsellor almost continually since then, had a third child and a couple of stints in a mental health hospital, we did some church-based marriage enrichment stuff, and finally last year when I hit a wall and couldn't do it any more, we talked about the possibility of separation and booked in with a sex therapist. We saw her for six months, and at the end of it he said he felt she had made things worse rather than better (she helped me to identify as asexual and brought some clarity to our issues but didn't magically restore my desire for sex with him). He didn't want to continue seeing her, so we stopped. In January after one particularly bad fight I pushed him to see a doctor because even though he knew the "cause", he clearly was depressed, not coping and needed support in dealing with it. I said that his self-worth was tied to our sex life in a way that wasn't normal and he shot back "I don't think YOU'RE normal", and then angrily said something like "it's ridiculous that *I* have to take antidepressants because *you* won't have sex with me". But then the next day he calmed, said sorry, and saw the doctor. He started taking meds and got a psych referral. It took him months to actually find/book in with a psych, and in the meantime we had other conversations that gradually broke my hope in ever finding a resolution, including one where he told me he wasn't Christian anymore and wouldn't be coming back to church, and that he'd lost his faith because of my asexuality. He said he thought that I was a hypocrite, turning back on the vows I had made before God at our wedding. That was really the breaking point for me, but I waited a while to be sure. When he finally had the first psych appointment that he had been waiting months for, I asked afterwards how it had gone and he said that she had told him his expectations for our marriage were fairly normal, and that he hadn't made a second appointment because "there's no point". That sealed it for me, because I felt like he was unwilling to take responsibility for his own happiness and wellbeing, and I couldn't bear that burden for him anymore. I had done everything to make our relationship work, had sacrificed myself for years, forced myself into sex I didn't want, seen counsellors alone and together, read books, bought him sex toys, even suggested "outsourcing" that aspect of the relationship (i.e. given him consent to sleep with someone else). I was done.

It's been three weeks since I told him I wanted to separate. After the initial anger and blame directed at me ("you're destroying our family", "you're a despicable excuse for a human", "I'm going to tell the kids you're abandoning me because you don't love me anymore") he did a complete 180 into self-loathing and self-blame ("I'm a rapist", "I destroyed you", "I don't deserve to be with you"). He's seen three counsellors in the space of two weeks, quit porn and reddit, begged me to go to a marriage counsellor and to be 'separated under one roof' with an aim of reconciling. And me? I have had so many moments of self-doubt. Moments where I reached out to friends and family to reassure me that I'm not a terrible person by saying it's too late. That my Christianity doesn't mean I owe him yet another chance. That it doesn't matter if the narrative for some people is "he was willing to keep trying and she gave up", because I have given it my all and it's OK to walk away. That even if his regret is 100% sincere, even if his willingness to change is not just an attempt to win me back, sticking to my decision would not make me a judgmental, hard-hearted failure who is ruining my kids' lives. I think I'm only strong enough to do this at all because I have wonderful people like my sister who are reassuring me every step of the way, and people like my parents who love my (ex)husband but understand my decision and will support me no matter what. Plus a community of strong women who have been my friends for a long time and will remind me that no one can say I didn't try to make it work.

 

I'm not fundie, and I certainly wasn't raised that way (my family are atheist), but I feel a huge weight of guilt and pressure to reconcile and forgive. My husband has not done anything like what Josh has done, but still, I understand why Anna didn't leave. He cried and said sorry and went to Jesus Jail and she wanted so badly to believe that he could change. She'd only ever seen him be a great father to their kids, so she was able to rationalise that something that happened before those kids existed doesn't make him a danger to them. She had a community of people, including her family, pressuring her to forgive and promising that there was hope and redemption for Josh. She's been abused, financially and spiritually, from day one, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was emotional and sexual abuse too. But she wouldn't see it as abuse, because he didn't hit her, and he was really sorry. Anna's been broken. Her not leaving isn't just about not having the resources/support network, it's about not having the self-worth to realise she's allowed to demand better for her life and her children.

Except she is wrong here, either because she does not know or does not have all the facts. Bail is not set until after an arraignment. There has been no arraignment and he is not being held without bond. He has not been arraigned.

Okay FJ my time has come.....a family member did federal time for some shady business dealings. It was federal because it was part of the VA/DC/MD area otherwise it would've been state. 

Things I can say from my own experience: 

They knew about 6months to a year before that he/she was going to be arrested and the actual day was prearranged for them to appear. Most of that time was negotiating their deal. Once they were arrested, they didn't get bailed out because it was credit for time served. They did less than  two years in a camp. The time from arrest to trial is very quick when it's prearranged because you waive your right to all the stuff that slows trials down. 

I imagine even if Josh didn't take a deal, they were in contact and working with him. They don't like drama if they can help it - you get a lot more news with federal agents in the title.

Count me as another one who doesn't feel bad for any of the adults here. The kids? Hell yeah they drew a shitty lot in live and deserve a lot better. Them i feel bad for, but Anna? No. I ran out of sympathy when she refused to leave the first time and went on to have 4 more children with Josh. 

If it is financial I wonder if we'll see Jim Bob arrested too because honestly I don't see Josh as smart enough to pull off financial crimes on his own nor do I see them only taking Josh down for this if the rest of the family is involved.

I just feel deep in my gut that it's not a financial crime. His history has painted a grim picture, and honestly, I don't think he's smart enough to commit major financial crimes. Also, the Duggar finances and business are all so heavily intertwined there's no doubt in my mind if it was financial, other Duggars would be going down with him. I would have assumed we would have seem more than one arrest yesterday if that were the case.

Minor Duggars are getting ripped off too. Their hard earned sold their childhood out to tv money is goi g to be spent defending that fucktard. This still pisses me off. When they go down I wonder if any of the adults will wish they sued before (like Jill) and got their fair share. But I suppose they did get houses. But hey Jim Bob could make them sell. I doubt Jill will be willing to give any of her payout back.

Obviously I'm just speculating, but I feel like if they knew in advance he was going to be arrested yesterday that it was sort of weird timing with the everything else they had going on right now (speaking at ATI/Jinger's book coming out/baby announcement). From the outside it looks more like a kool-aid man "surprise!" situation.

Hmm. If this is how it went down, then it's even more curious what the hell illegal stuff he pulled off without getting JB or others involved. Because if they negotiated a day for being arrested, that suggests there aren't more Duggar arrests coming. And why agree on a day JB, Michelle and Priscilla would be at a conference in Big Sandy? Surely he realised his arrest would affect them too, and not having JB and Mechelle close would make it harder for Anna and the M-kids.
