My uncle was an offender. I hated his guts and was horrified by what he did. You are correct on the suicide risks. He attempted it and was unsuccessful after he was arrested and let go on his own recognizance. Now, his was not a federal case. But I do have to question the logic of a system that drags out the investigation while he continues to live with his own children and within a short distance of additional minors in his family. 

I feel for his brothers and sisters right now (especially the sisters who were abused by him). As is typical in such cases, it is a struggle for the family. How do you look at your family in the same way knowing what has happened or allegedly happened? You feel a sense of betrayal and distrust. It makes you question things. And for his former victims, I have a feeling (saying this as a survivor of such things myself) they are probably questioning how it was handled in the past. 

I hope that more than a few of the grown Duggars are able to confront and question Jim Bob and Michelle about previous decisions. If anything good can come from this, perhaps this family can start to look beyond the brand of their family and at the way they have been raised. I know that my abuse afforded me that opportunity to tear down pedestals and be more critical.

An acquaintance of mine was busted for child porn in college. But I have no idea how the two cases compare, since I have no idea whether college acquaintance had a single image or a lot, or whether the age of the victim matters to the case (is it considered more criminal to have content portraying young children than to have late-teen victims?) but I saw him working in a retail store a little over a year later, so it doesn't seem like he was away for long. He was on the Megan's Law list for some time.

Remember: the possession of images of child sexual abuse is not considered a victimless crime because children were victimized in the making of those images.

Long ago, so I don't have the details,  I read a lawyer's account of having to review CSA images from an archive in preparation for a case. He said he was traumatized just reviewing the images.

My ex had an uncle who was in the FBI and for a time on the child porn assignment - they swap them out fairly often because of the psychological toll it takes on the officers.  By all accounts his uncle was a good man and even with intensive therapy provided by the FBI he struggled for a long time with nightmares, panic over the safety of his kids, and serious mental distress.  

That said while their are good officers if the system is allowing children to be in danger during on going investigations that needs to change.  I don't know how - but my God can you imagine knowing and seeing the fucking birth announcements and "little duggar" instas?
