Right, but I don't think he is suggesting he wants to take "the internets" away from "us".  Probably why he figured he would reach out to Bill Gates. ;)

No - not "us."  Not this time.  How long before the we part of "us" becomes "them" and he or someone think limiting your access to communication and information is in "our" best interest?

Lines between who is them and who is us are very fluid..history tells us that.

And it should never need to be said, but I am not an ISIS supporter and I am opposed to terrorists/murders of all stripes.  People who are planning illegal acts are already breaking the law.  It's already against the law to slaughter people in the name of ideology or because someone is having a bad day.  Enacting laws to shut down communication so people aren't exposed to social media which could give them radical ideas?

What could possibly be less American than that?

To paraphrase Dennis Miller who is occasionally right about stuff, 'we shouldn't be silencing the bad and crazy ideas but let them run around on the playground and get their asses kicked by the good ideas."

Drive it underground and you make it more attractive for the very people likely to be drawn to it in the first place.  Did you ever have a friend or boyfriend your parents forbid you to see because they were a bad influence?  How many people did as they were told?  Far fewer than those who just drive the friendship underground where in secrecy and the required deceit meant a kid wouldn't talk to his parents about trouble even if they wanted to.

FFS this shit doesn't work on teenage me who snuck out my bedroom window, and he thinks it's going to work as a policy against violent angry people WAY more motivated in their cause than I was to make out with the guy they didn't like.

FJ is full of opinionated people and if you use us as a microcosm of the world there are many things on which most of us agree and many on which all the many differences would split us into many groups of "other."  Don't kid yourself that if this were ever allowed to take hold that your individual opinions will always be deemed acceptable.

I am psychic and I can say definitively that if this were to occur, his supporters would let you know exactly why it was 100%, entirely, without a shadow of a doubt, Obama's fault.  Trust me - my psychic predictions are never wrong.

Thus far today Obama has already corrupted a registry on a workstation I am rebuilding, caused an error in the online update of my mission critical software, and made me typo a line item in my operating budget, and given me the headache I've had for the last two days.

I mean everything bad that happens is his fault, right?

So my catching the typo before submitting, being able to fix the registry, resolve the error, and get rid of my headache...who is responsible for the good stuff?  I mean if we're all completely at the mercy of external forces for every bit of minutia in our lives then who gets credit when things go well?

Ah, fuck it, Alex Van Halen.  I love him so I'll just give him credit whenever anything good happens to me.  After the election and Obama is gone someone will need to let me know who to blame for the bad stuff.

*sigh* Trump really doesn't understand how the interwebz works, does he? :D I'm fairly sure Anonymous is already peeing its collective pants, laughing at Trump reaching out to Gates, to police the web.

Silly, silly, Samurai_Sarah - of course a mere woman such as yourself can not possibly understand this, but all-powerful men such as Mr. Trump don't need to "understand" how things work in order to rule the world.  He doesn't need to understand how the interwebs actually works, if he decrees it, Gates will have no choice but to comply.  Similarly, he doesn't need to understand other cultures or people even slightly different than himself...

Thanks, but I wasn't ranting just talking.  I get that a lot - people assuming I'm pissed when I'm not and you guys can't even see my RBF.  I should really work on that.

I can see the problem with Trump's plan to take over the internet. It's not Bill Gates he needs to talk to, it's Al Gore. After all, he invented the internet so restricting its use should be no problem, right?

Please make Donald Trump go away. Please.

I think Sir Tim Berners- Lee, who really did invent the internet, would say to Trump, 'and who did you say you were?'.......

Oh, I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that. I'm picturing a Donald melt down a la Patty Duke towards the end of Valley of the Dolls… (I'M NEELY O'HARAAAAAA!) It would be a joy to behold.

I think Donald is just very out of touch with technology and the internet. I checked out one of his books from the library once and in it he said about how much he didn't like technology. He had never used an atm card, didn't have a computer in his office and thought that email was for wimpy people. This book was written in the 2000's so we aren't talking about his books from the 80's, but even a little over 10 years ago Donald was completely out of touch with the modern world. He didn't seem to realize that the reason he never has to use an atm card, a computer for work or email a document to someone was because he is so rich that he has people who do those things for him. These things get done, he just doesn't do it.

Right - I totally forgot about Mr. Gore's awesome contribution of giving us the internet.  A solo effort I believe it was - just thought up a worldwide network for transferring data while he was in the shower, sketched it on a napkin, and boom...porn, Angry Birds, and Free Jinger.

This is great though, because unless Al is no longer a democrat that would require a bipartisan effort and Trump isn't capable of that.  It would be like Quirrel's hands burning when he tried to touch Harry in Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone.

We're safe.

Still, you'd think that a businessman would at least have an inkling of how much the business world relies on the internet these days

I woke up thinking about this this morning (scary what my brain worries about at night).

Trump's wife, Melania, is Slovenian - she was naturalized in ?2006 (I don't want to recheck the date, but pretty sure.)  She actually speaks Serbian.  She's pretty damn close to the "other" Trump is fear-mongering against.

Would he countenance actions like these against her?  Does he even think through what he is proposing.

(Nah, hers a purdy li'l woman.  Her can't be a terrorist.)

But SoS - women aren't "people".  Women are pretty much simply aesthetic objects.  They range from young and beautiful pieces of ass one imagines dropping to their knees to obnoxious, fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals with blood coming out of [their] whatever.  These are the criteria on which we should judge women.  But all you gentlemen out there, don't forget - they are all gold diggers.

How so?  She's a Slovene if I understand correctly who are predominately Catholic with a smaller minority of Protestants and she's a European slav.  She speaks Serbian because most people from the former Yugoslavia speak Serbo-Croatian and the vast majority of Serbs are Serbian Orthodox Christians.

As for who to blame, according to Trump you should blame immigrants. Which will soon be anyone who isn't a white Christian straight cis Republican. He might require people to be male to in order for them to escape any blame as well.

However, this will always be a classic: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uhY9Zxv1-oo

People tend to have no problem with the cognitive dissonance of either being the thing they hate or having a loved one be what they hate.

Hitler thought the perfect human had blonde hair and blue eyes, he was a brunette. It's also been suggested that he has Jewish ancestry. Voldemort hated all muggle borns/anyone with a drop of muggle blood, and he was a half blood.

I thought of the Japanese internment camps also... extermination/elimination of a group (any group) for the acts of a few seems... a bit drastic.  (I hope the quote thingy worked right)

Interesting that American citizens of German, Russian, and Italian descent were not interred during WW2, just the Japanese citizens had their rights so egregiously violated. Racism. Just like with targeting Muslims, who are thought of largely as brown people from exotic countries. How simplistic and downright stupid.

I will never understand the US relationship with Saudi Arabia. So many promising alternatives to fossil fuels exist, if adequate research and development was funded, dependence on foreign oil could be significantly reduced. Then, no pandering to countries that support terror would be thought of as necessary.

And < 500 miles to Austria and about 1200 miles to Sweden.

I hate Trump and think he's a raging bigot, but that doesn't make a European from a slavic country/predominately Christian culture damn near a Muslim from the middle east.  He is an asshole for his bias against Muslims, no doubt, but the ethnicity of his wife doesn't play into this at all.

Thanks - I love that quote.

I'm conflicted though.  My father was an immigrant so on his side I'm first generation...so I blame my dad?  But my mom's family came back in basically two waves - the Mayflower and other 16th century trips and the 1800s when they left Ireland because my family...we like access to food.

They all intermarried...so I should hate...myself?

Great - I'm a racist against a very small group of ...me.

See, I think ALL immigrants play into this.

*shrugs*  Different dividing lines, I guess.

Melania was born in Slovenia a (at one time overwhelmingly) predominantly Catholic country.  The official language is Slovene.  She is fluent in  English, French, Slovene, Serbian, and Austrian German, but if I had to venture a guess I might say her native language is Slovene.  She married Trump in an Episcopal church.  I think he might let her in the country even if she wasn't hot.  But who knows.

ETA - in 2002, 2.4% of the population in Slovenia was Islamic.  10% were atheist.

I personally have great doubts about Trump's faith, but that's another thought.

I also find it interesting that he is Presbyterian, but they married in an Episcopal church.

I think Trump's gods are himself and the almighty dollar.  I think he will play Christian in whatever way best suits him in the moment.  MANY, many people who self-identify as belonging to specific religions or belief systems don't actually believe much if anything of the sort.
