I doubt that they can distinguish between "family image" and the individuality of a child.  What they have is veneer, not substance, so when Josh breaks the veneer, all they want to do is patch the veneer.

They don't even seem to care about the individual feelings or personalities of the children. Michelle usually can't tell more than a few personal details about anyone younger than Jason (and even he's iffy), and from the beginning they did the 'always dress the same way' thing even when they weren't actually out somewhere, all with the same 'homeschool hair', identifying as a team rather than independent members of a team, and openly criticizing the public ideal of individuality. But I can't understand how their strong-armed family values can coexist with witnessing and just ignoring mental health struggles in their own children. A lot of stupid hypocrisies in politics and religion I can at least understand the logic behind (even if I disagree with them), but this is different. It's claiming to be all about the children and then hardcore alienating any children who have problems. It's the family CHOOSING to ignore or exacerbate problems they already know are there.

"Who were we spending holidays with?" The person who was taught to conceal his problems rather than actually work on fixing them. Duh

I'm not convinced that there's anything really "wrong" with Josh besides him just being an asshole. Looking at his behavior under the umbrella of his family's beliefs, then yes, he's an addict and all that jazz, but from a normal, real world perspective? I'm not buying it. I don't mean to denigrate therapy, since I think that most people even without apparent issues would benefit from it, and the Duggar family as a whole needs a hell of a lot of it, but if what we're talking about is "fixing" Josh's porn viewing and infidelity, therapy isn't going to accomplish a thing. I don't believe that he's any kind of addict (remember, these people view even occasional use of porn as a Big Deal, so him claim that he's a porn addict in the true sense of the word is suspect). Like other men who habitually cheat, he does it because he wants to, and he'll stop either when he's older and his sex drive wanes or he remarries a women he wants to be faithful to. This isn't Anna's fault but I firmly believe that once someone gets into the habit of mistreating their significant other, they'll always mistreat them. You can't start respecting someone you're in an intimate relationship when you haven't respected them in a long time, if ever.

I agree that he's not an addict. But his behavior from a young age was definitely abnormal. The teen molestation of such young siblings is not something most kids go through. There are serious issues there that don't seem to have ever been properly addressed since he was sent to Gothard reform camp rather than counseling. I care nothing about him viewing pornography (seriously, this is such a non-issue to me, I don't get the outrage people feel over it), and while his cheating is completely scummy, loads of people do it without any underlying issue except for selfishness. But I feel like his actions as a teen combined with his behavior as an adult merits at least a visit to a psychologist, and if what Danica Dillon says is also true, he has retained some of his nonconsensual, aggressive sexual behavior as an adult. I don't know if I believe her, because her actions seem very opportunistic and we have no actual evidence that they have ever even met, and a person is innocent until proven guilty. But it concerns me that the family hasn't really addressed this latest aspect of the Josh problem. This family loves making statements, and they love proving moral superiority. I don't think he's an addict who needs to be in rehab. I do think he needs a real therapist (probably now more than ever) to help him through the problems he's been facing in his personal life since age 15, and also to deal with the public scrutiny. I don't really know how he'll get through the current turmoil without collapsing in on himself.

We don't know Josh, and we don't really know what Michelle and Jim Bob have hidden in their closets. There's no real way to know what kind of childhood Josh had, or what kind of parents JB & M were. We can guess based on rumors and old blog posts and episodes, but that's about all. Not saying Josh isn't the asshole he portrays himself as, just that it's impossible to know whether or not mental or emotional issues are a contributing factor to his behavior.

To be fair, I think we can also guess based on the police reports. The police interviews did not cover or acknowledge Josh receiving any counseling, they only said he'd been sent away for awhile (to what we know was basically labor therapy run by Gothard). Even if we trust the family's claim that he got his own counseling, and paid for it, we can also look at the fact that he was 15 or 16 at the time. What could he have afforded, and how long could he have afforded it for? His continued compulsive behavior indicates that there is still a problem that needs to be addressed.

Anyone who molests children, or molests their siblings, has definite emotional issues that contribute to their behavior. It's a serious problem that doesn't just crop up from nowhere. I'm absolutely NOT saying his parents caused it, but there was definitely something emotional going on with him that would cause predatory sexual behavior like that, and a counselor could have at least helped him understand his own motivations and perhaps given him tools to combat further aggressive behavior. Unpaid construction work doesn't do that.

ehhh Amarula. I do drink Amarula. Not a big spirtis of any kind drinker though. I like mead now (hot mead is fantastic) and chilled cider(the English, alcoholic kind) in summer.

I think there are plenty of things wrong with Josh, but sex addiction isn't one of those things. On that front, he's just a philandering asshole. But I would buy it if it came out that he had depression, issues with his relationship with food, and very screwed-up ideas about sexuality and relationships stemming from his screwed-up upbringing. I don't think he's addicted to sex; I think he's an asshole who never learned how to not be an asshole, and on top of that, he's compensating for some deep-seated issues regarding possession and autonomy (imagine going from living in a house where everything down to how much you were allowed to eat was strictly controlled and you had nothing that was truly just yours, and now all of a sudden you're a married adult with the freedom to do and buy and have whatever you want...but the last vestige of control is your wife you don't really love, but married her because mommy and daddy and TLC wanted you to).

You have summarized exactly how I feel about Josh.   The molestations are the biggest issue for me, that was definitely abnormal, the porn and cheating is not.   Awful to be sure but not abnormal.    I do see a link between the molestations and his behavior with Danica, if what she is say is true about their encounters.

He does need true therapy not this fake "rehab" that he supposedly going through.   He hasn't gotten it and won't get it which is why he will end up messing up again.

To be clear, I didn't mean to imply that the molestation isn't a problem and that Josh didn't/doesn't need therapy over it. I just don't necessarily think that the molestation committed when he was a teen and his actions as an adult with grown women are related, so when it comes to his infidelity, no amount of therapy in the world is going to make a difference.

Oh, all his misbehavior is strictly caused by repressed rebellion any normal teen goes thru. It's like he just went thru his adolescence in the last 5 years & now maybe he'll be normal minus Gothard.

With great reluctance, I have finally come out of longtime lurkdom to share this somewhat interesting comment someone left on a Yahoo article about Josh. Take it as you will.

"I photographed a Rick Santorum appearance with Jim, his son and two of the girls several years ago in The Villages, Florida (the infamous glitter bomb appearance). Josh creeped out most of the women by being WAY too touchy feely. His father refused to acknowledge the female journalists present. The girls would not stand near their brother and seemed VERY uncomfortable around him."

Hey - I am trying to google this quote for some context and can't find it.  Do you by any chance have a link to where on Yahoo this was posted?  Or is this some kind of comment on an article that is not searchable?  Or do I have no Google foo?  Thanks.

Really?  "all" of Joshes actions, including molesting four of his sisters (one not yet school aged) and another child are "misbehavior" caused by "rebellion any normal teen goes through"?  Do you really believe that or am I totally misreading this?

I need to stay out of this thread...

Sorry, it's the kind where you wouldn't be able to find it. :/ It was just a general Yahoo article about the Duggars - I think it was about Danica Dillon's lawsuit - and I scrolled through the comments until I happened to see that one. I copied and pasted it on a whim.

Now here's some stuff that you would actually be able to track. Go to the second picture on famyfriday (the meme that says "travels internationally to spread Christian love") and read all the comments. One of the commenters is called bassxcandy and is supposedly a bit of an insider. Some examples:

FYI - from the FJ guidelines: "Do NOT post speculation concerning the sexual orientation of any minor children or adult children still living in their parental homes. These kids have no say in their lives being put out for public consumption and their lives are hard enough without their homophobic parents getting the idea from us that one of their children may be gay. Users who are unable to abide by this rule after warnings have been issued will be placed on a Journey to the Heart to consider their actions."

Thanks for telling us about this "insider information."   I found this part below interesting also.  We could speculate that JD and Joseph both agree that  the production staff should not have a beer or that one or both didn't trust the other so they couldn't discuss it and agree not to rat.

  • bassxcandyAlso one time the crew (4 people) were spotted having a wrap beer in the next town over. John and Joseph spotted them and ratted them out to Jim Bob. So even the ones you think keep to themselves really don't. Jim Bob lectured them pretty heavily about associating themselves with the children and choosing to have a drink afterwards.

Let me see if I have this straight....

Four grown adults finish work and go for a beer. They're not IN work, they're not even NEAR work and they're not planning to go back to work AFTER the beer.

And JimBob thinks he has the right to upbraid them for this. Because his godly family are so perfect that they don't even want to be distantly associated with anyone evil enough to drink beer.

Child molestation, no problem. Beer though? No way, sir.

Uhhhhh....What were JD and Joseph doing in an ungodly bar?

They might have just been in one of those bar-restaurant type places.

Well did you happen to forget that if anyone who is near of his perfect, holy, godly children even dares to commit worldly evil acts such as drinking beer or watching tv (and somehow child abuse is not part of it, in his logic) his little brood is tainted forever in god's eyes and jim jong bob's ego will not be able to handle it

I'm not buying it. Sounds like JD & Joseph went to have a beer w/them & JB questioned them & they confessed. JD & Joseph are not "children."

Whether JD and Joseph actually went and had a beer with the crew, confessing to it later or simply spotted the crew members while they were out and ratted them, either way they sound completely insufferable.  It is indeed as if they were children because this is elementary school level tattling.  Good grief.
