HOLY SHIT!!

I thought Bounty was generous. Condoms though?

I read Finland is the top country for education in the world this week. Go Finland!

That box is safer than some fundie cots and suitcase malarkies 8-)

Some items from the maternity package are treasured and retro fans want to have old blankets from the 70s and the 80s.

Dear fundies, this is how my awful socialist (you know, this box and public healthcare and tax-funded equal education and such = socialism) welfare state promotes motherhood. And those condoms? They are to prevent unnecessary abortions.

The condoms are a great idea. Just made me smile as it was not my first thought after childbirth

From the article.

Would you put your baby or toddler outside in the freezing cold for their lunchtime nap? Most Nordic parents wouldn't give it a second thought. For them it's part of their daily routine.

"I think it's good for them to be in the fresh air as soon as possible," says Lisa Mardon, a mother-of-three from Stockholm, who works for a food distribution company.

"Especially in the winter when there's lots of diseases going around... the kids seem healthier."

ME! ME! ME! ME! Rain hail or shine. Never understood the napping in a cot thing. Shows how all cultures are so different. (That looks like my pram which they still make ..Wow)

If you just hand babies what they need in life, how will they ever learn to not suckle at the gubmint teat? I say give them some boot straps if you need to give them a gift and let them do the rest.

For real though, I read about this in a novel recently and it's nice to see a picture of one for real. Good on Finland!

I wish America had something similar, but it made me smile to know that humans somewhere cared. ;)

This is awesome! What a fantastic idea! And the clothes are so cute-- I'd take the box over the grant in a heartbeat.

I'm sure fundies would find a way to condemn this as some kind of socialistic, godless, evil government plot to designed to undermined parental authority.

This is just lovely. It's like telling a mom that the community she lives in appreciates her and her new baby, and wants them to have the very best. It was sweet to read about the new moms comparing their babies' clothes, identifying the kids' birth years by the styles and patterns they wore.

(Unfortunately, I can picture some of the brand-conscious gals in the US turning their noses up at such a thing, although I'd have loved it. Back in the '70s, in some communities, couples registering for marriage licenses used to get gift packages of household items, and new moms got packages of baby supply samples at the hospital. My roommate, a second-time mom, emphatically told the nurse, "No, we don't want any formula--WE [she and I] are breastfeeding!" She didn't want me to chicken out!)

I love this! Maybe I am way too pessimistic, but I dont this we will ever see this in the US. :(

How exciting it must be for a first time mum to receive this box! Like getting your driving license or your Santa Claus coming.

I was just in Helsinki, and met up with an FJer who lives there. I loved Helsinki, and the FJer was a very dear person.

I was always put in the garden for a nap as a baby in an ancient pram

It is somewhat typical to buy older prams, put them permanently in the balcony and use the as a bed for naps. Newer ones are bought for walkings.

Oh my goodness, that system is just awesome. :)

The Greek in me about stroked out when I saw the picture of the baby in the carriage in the snow.

What a truly "Pro Life" gesture.

Exactly ! How wonderful to show each new baby that they matter. And I especially love that it is something every single baby can receive - not related to income levels or town or family background - what a great unifying and welcoming idea.

I would love to live in a Scandinavian country. I think the way I feel about having children and a family would be completely different had I grown up there. Oh, ancestors ... why did you ever leave?
