I didn't know he went to Ukraine; I thought that was Lawson. All these white fundy doucheboys look/act alike to me though. Travelling abroad to lecture the locals and take Selfies for Jesus, while their wives and wives-to-be gush about how amazing they are.

It was Nathan that posted about being in Ukraine. But yes, they're basically all the same.

It’s been several months since he went to Uganda and he kept pretty quiet about it until now. Wonder why he’s posting about it suddenly.

His and Tiff's upcoming  nuptials aren't getting enough attention? He had a few minutes to spare from his hectic concert schedule?

Their racism is beyond disgusting. One minute laughing about killing George Floyd and the next playing white savior in Uganda where they get to essentially experiment on Black people and call it medical care. Horrifying.

Despite being openly racist, People magazine will probably still do an article on their wedding.

If they do, it will probably be online only. I doubt it will make the regular magazine apart from maybe the Passages column.

Of course he does. If he doesn't totally upstage his bride by performing an original song during the ceremony, I will be forced to eat every hat I own.

No horse? I guess he’ll just have to let Tiffany be in the photos then.

I've been hoping for this. Don't let me down Lawson.

Here are some of my guesses:

- Lawson prefers being the white saviour to bipoc (mainly cute children), not mainly white adults

- he was asked to do some actual work to help people affected by the war and we can’t have that now, can we?!

- scarce photo opportunities cause people wouldn’t give him the light of day

- he got bored

- he felt unsafe and unwilling to compromise his safety for a couple of “interesting” social media posts

- it’s warmer in Uganda right now and Lawson was fed up with chilly Ukraine

Also, I might be wrong and read too much into it, but I disliked reading Lawsons post about his travels into “the heart of Uganda”. It sounds somehow racist to me, after all because it makes me think of Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” about colonised Congo. Also, I’ve sometimes heard people saying they traveled into “the dark heart of Africa” and all these phrases sound bad to me. Is this just my personal association/perception? Like, I just don’t think Lawson would write that he went into the “heart of Germany” or something…

I don’t expect you need to get some ketchup and a knife and fork ready . Lawson is reliable when it comes to certain things… 😂

do u think there white saviorism is conscious or sub conscious, do u actually think that there like I, a white man need to go save these black people in Uganda or there just going over there thinking there actually helping and it's just inadvertently white savories, because I think it's the second one.

I don't think they're actually helping at all. In general missionaries and secular white saviors to the global south do more harm than good. From what we've seen of Lawson, especially in his Medic Corps role, this is especially true for him and the other Bates involved. They pose in front of disaster/poverty porn and pretend they have expertise that they don't. If they actually wanted to help they would donate the cost of their plane tickets (usually $1000 or more) to local professional groups making a difference. But they act like the people of Uganda are blessed simply to be in proximity to their white faces.

I also don't think anyone is inadvertently a white savior, any more than anyone is inadvertently a sexual predator. They have to be participating in the logic of racism and dehumanization to get there, whether they're doing that consciously or not. But given the KKK glory room in the Bates house and the other open racism we've seen from them, I wouldn't be surprised if Lawson consciously thinks Ugandans are inferior and in need of guidance from "civilized" white people.

And I agree with @FluffySnowball that talking about "the heart of Uganda" gives away his racism. No one ever says that about countries full of white people. I'm at a loss to imagine what "the heart of Germany" would even mean.

ETA: For more info on why this whole thing is so harmful, I really recommend following nowhitesaviors on Instagram. It's run by Ugandans who are speaking out about how terrible it is to have a bunch of Lawsons running around their country.

I've read many times "in the heart of Europe" or "heart of France", about touristic spots.

Lawson is just parroting the typical sentemces fundie-missionaries use, amd he's awful overall but I don't see a problem in the expression "heart of".

You're right, I've also seen it in touristic material promoting a place. But I've never heard that expression used by someone who went there and I think that's the difference. I mean I would find it super weird if someone I knew posted on social media about getting to spend time in "the heart of Europe." Normally people just say the name of the place they went to.

Do you really think Lawson has read (or even hear of) Heart of Darkness? You give him a lot of credit.

The "heart of" a place means the most important or influential part of that place.

I don’t think that definition rings true in the U.S. where the Heartland is the Midwest. I think Lawson would be referring to where the “real” (more poverty, less education?) people of a country live as opposed to the modernized city folk. I will admit to knowing nothing about the demographics of Uganda. I just think that could be his interpretation.

Actually, agricultural areas are vitally important to a country. Look at the Ukraine, which is a crucial part of the global food chain. This is a big reason Russia has tried to gain control of the country. Ukraine's farmland is so important that despot is trying to steal away.  (I realize there are other reasons for the war as well)

In US politics, some people use the"Heartland"  to describe the Midwest as a place filled with hard-working rural farmers who grow food, hunt, attend church, are "true patriots" and have conservative social and political values. Trump tries to attract those "heartland voters."  It's not a term everyone uses, some people find it offensive, actually, believing that the midwest is a big place that cannot be painted with a broad brush.

I still have a hard time believing that Lawson will get married in less than a week. Who do we think will be there of the other fundie families? I can't remember with which Duggar he is close (well apart from Jinger and Jana 😏) Also I think the only sibling that has said will not go is Alyssa right? The others have all confirmed will be there. I am curious to see if we will have a lot of photos in real-time or if they will delay that until they have the "film" sort of as Katie has done

Someone found the wedding announcement and it said the wedding will have approximately 200 guests. That limitation and the fact that most large families won’t be able to afford flights may result on not so many fundies there.
