I have seen a lot of people talk about that, actually. But it's not just the idea of working on a holiday, it's about how workers tend to be treated particularly badly on Black Friday. Others cite the idea of opposing over-consumption, hence Buy Nothing Day.

Again, I don't think it's terrible if you shop on Black Friday, but there are reasons why others don't. And I don't think it's fair to say "But what about all these other issues?" (Not that you did this, just that I know people do.) It really irritates me when people act like you can't care about more than one thing at a time.

Really, though, what is actually killing Black Friday is online shopping.

Regarding Derick, I think all he was doing was making what he thought was a joke about sales that aren't actually saving you much money. He's just not that deep.

I went to the mall at 7:30pm after I got out of work and it was still a madhouse. I was hoping it would have calmed down by then but it didn’t. I only went to see if the store that sells the bras I like had them on sale. I only bought a needed bra at 30% off and the new kindle fire. I was able to get it for $30 so it was too good of a deal pass up. My mom told me she would give me money for the kindle and told me Merry Christmas. I did need a new one as mine was starting to go and I use it everyday.

I do hate that stores are opening on Thanksgiving now and would never shop that evening. Personally I don't have an issue with Black Friday though, and worked a few of them in retail. Maybe I got lucky that people didn't lose their shit in the store I was at. I actually liked holiday time even though BF, Christmas eve and Dec. 26 were all mandatory days. I loved being busy, beat being a stuck as a greeter in the baby section of the store on a slow day. (baby section was the worst as most clothes were hung up, couldn't even occupy myself refolding)  The worst job I ever had was working the concession stand at a movie theater. I was yelled at almost daily by customers when 95% of the issues were not something I had anything to do with. 

That job made me a believer that everyone, at least in the US, should have to work in a customer service job for a couple of months at some point in their life. Wouldn't stop all the entitled, irate asses, but it would probably cut the number down a lot.

Anyways, I just did a little online shopping. Not a necessary purchase but at the top of the want list - a nice dress coat. Having been on a super lean budget the last five years I do get excited about being able to buy some good investment pieces when there's a deal to be had. Next up a new convection oven since I live out of mine and my and current ones door doesn't close all the way. Cyber Monday deals come through for me please!

Normally, I'm totally with you and Derrick on hating Black Friday. Unfortunately, I moved provinces to get away from my ex, and I didn't take a lot of furniture with me. Literally every throw pillow was a fight. This year, Black Friday & Boxing Week are going to be fantastic for deals on furnishing my home - from the comfort of my home (I'll look in store before the deals then buy online for the sale price).

Seriously, though. I understand neither the BF hype, nor the hate. It's a day off. Of course many people are going to use it to shop for things they either need or want. I never get up at 3 am and stand in line, but we did make a very necessary and expensive home purchase because we had time to sit around for the installation. 

It’s been a tradition in my family to go Black Friday shopping for decades. Usually just the women. It used to be so much more fun, each store would have little freebies if you were one of the 1st 50 or 100 in store. So we’d map out a plan to get them all and rush around like maniacs hitting 5 am, 6 am openings. Like a scavenger hunt. It was a blast. 

But only 1 store in my area does that now, and most stores are open on Thanksgiving. It’s not the same.

It’s still a fun ritual/ tradition for our family though, the younger girls look forward to when they are old enough, my sons girlfriend came the last two years, we get breakfast. But actually shopping? Not much happened. I’m going to start trying to do more on Small Business Saturday, and shop local.

Black Friday? Not on your life. I hate crowds, I get twitchy in long check-out lines. And, since everything is going to be shipped, I'll wait a couple of weeks and order everything to have it delivered where it needs to go. Our big holiday weekend shopping experience was heading to the grocery store last night for lunch meat, cheese and TP. 

As much as I want to refurnish my house, I am waiting to see what happens with the settlement and stuff. 

Buying vehicles...yes, I bought one with all the bells and whistles a couple of months ago. Why? Because my Mustang was literally causing me pain and I couldn't take it anymore. My only requirement for a new car was the color. I found one a couple of years old with all sorts of bells and whistles and in the color I wanted. I even splurged on personalized license plates. So...it's in the garage. The other one is 20 years old and still going. Best 6 grand we ever spent. 

Now, I'm going to sit on my ass, enjoy my last day off before going back to work. Word has it that we're going to be right busy in the run up to Christmas. My son and his wife will be here after Christmas and I've arranged vacation during that time. A little R&R then because January-June is supposed to be insane at work and if all goes the way we want it to (Please Rufus), we'll also be having a house built during that time. Then I can lose my shit shopping!

I agree with people who said Americans buy too many things. I personally am not a “stuff”’person and neither is anyone in our family. Pretty much now all we buy each other for Christmas is experiences. I’m taking my mom out to a nice restaurant, my dad to a cocktail class, and got my grandma a gift certificate to the casino she likes to go to. IMO, gifts are much better when they’re an excuse to spend quality time with someone you love.

I did no actual Black Friday shopping, but did notice that Everything Kitchens was having a sale late Thanksgiving evening.  What I wanted was not one of their big items, but I did buy two Kitchen-Aid mixer paddles (blades) for my daughter.  I got her name in our Secret Santa and had decided even before she listed what she wanted that I'd get her a new blade for her 4.5 quart mixer.  The primary one is a FlexEdge blade and the other one is just a regular blade.  I may get her something else as well.

Jill is also socially inept. She and Josh seem to be the 2 adult Duggars who have not responded well to life outside the TTH. Me and Mr. Music had the intention to go Black Friday shopping at Walmart for a TV. We moved in together 5 months ago and when we moved, neither of us had much furniture. We opted to not buy everything in the first few months simply because new furniture is expensive and we are young and not rich. So slowly we bought a kitchen table (used! Cheap and in good shape), we also got a nice furniture from Ikea to eventually put the TV on, and my sister will give us two of her coffee tables for the living room. So TV time it was! Well it turned out the deals at Walmart were awful. Nothing worth buying really. We had checked the TV prices more than a month before going shopping and the difference was insignificant.

Being at Walmart, I scooted towards the Christmas section and we checked the price for a fake Christmas tree, ornaments and other Christmas decorations. It is our first Christmas in our little appartment but we want to decorate a bit. We checked the prices, which decorations we liked, what kind of light we were thinking about, etc. We decided to not buy anything that night but when coming back home on the subway, we were both talking about how fun our not-buying-anything-black-friday was.

I got a 2017 Explorer Limited. It's denim blue (blue with sparkles) with a tan leather interior. My Mustang was killing my back so unfortunately, it was time to trade it in. I LOVE the Explorer...it even has a/c for the seats so I won't cook my ass off in the summer. It has a sunroof, power everything, hooks up to my iphone. Got a good deal on it too.

I agree with the Black Friday hate, for a lot of the same reasons that everyone already said. I'm against the way the employees are treated, and that a lot of them don't have a choice about working on a holiday. I saw commercials where sales started at 5 o'clock on Thanksgiving. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that people are not able to celebrate a holiday about spending time with loved ones and feeling thankful for one's blessings (something that money cannot buy) so Americans can worship materialism. I'm not knocking anyone who takes part--I get the desire to save money, especailly since holiday gift buying can get expensive--but I personally won't support it.  

Fundies always talk about a war on Christmas, but if anything it's a war on Thanksgiving. Between Black Friday, and the Christmas season seeming to start earlier and earlier each year, poor Thanksgiving gets forgotten. Sometimes I feel like the only one who still really loves Thanksgiving for its own sake.

I've read some studies that show that buying material things doesn't bring long term happiness. Spending money on material goods doesn't really make us feel fullfilled or happy, but Americans seem to think that it does. What actually brings those feelings is spending money on experiences, like your family does.

What the heck is going on?  Jill posted a pie recipe and the photo does NOT look like a pile of shit!  In fact, it looks like a pecan pie normally looks... even actually appetizing?  None of the words are incorrectly spelled... even the somewhat challenging "coarsely."

I'll admit that buying my Explorer made me happy...because I wouldn't be in pain driving it. But, honestly, that's why I don't shop. I have specific things I'm looking for, a specific store to go to so I can get the things I'm looking for, pay for them and go home. I honestly have everything I need, most everything I want and nothing makes me happier than sitting on my fat ass here at home with my hubs and felines. As long as the pantry and fridge are stocked, we have a few bucks in the bank and the bills are paid, there's really nothing better. 

Yes, I want a new house...because I want something that's mine after renting for all these years. Yes it's probably going to be a pretty big house ~3000 sq ft, and hopefully a pool. Do I give a shit if someone has something to say about it? Nope. 

The rest...as long as I have my hub, felines, kids/grandkids...it's all good.

That pecan pie makes me twitch. I can't tolerate the "upside down" pecan halves. When I make a pecan pie, I painstakingly place the pecans "right" side up.

I don't like pecan pie but hers does look good! I did a pecan topping on the sweet potato casserole I made for Thanksgiving and I probably had some "upside down" halves on it... I actually can't really figure out which way of the pecan is supposed to be right side up? Also what's wrong with her braid? It looks cute.

I'm more bothered by the fact that they still haven't figured out how to strap their children into their car seats properly...

Macy’s does it every year. I had a blast doing it this year. Getting the freebies was like a scavenger hunt. The best was the free freshwater pearl earrings, Ralph Lauren Logo pillows, Gold Toe slippers, Longchamp crystal glass set, and the Martha Stewart 12 pc wine set! All were completely free after rebate. We beat the crowds by waiting until 2:30 AM to go but missed out on the free fashion watches and tote bags.

I hope this doesn’t sound like BEC because Jill has always been my favorite Duggar. Jill has to start wearing sunblock everyday, even in the winter, and try to not raise her eyebrows all the time because she’s starting to get static lines on her forehead and she is too young. I don’t think she’s even 27 yet. I am around Jill’s age and have the similar problem because I have pasty white fair skin that’s prone to freckling and I also am very expressive. It’s about health too because my family members have had melanoma and I don’t think Jill wore sunblock in Central America.  I make really stressed out faces frequently when focusing and didn’t pay attention to it until now. I have had to watch myself more. I hold a lot of tension in my face and am also a constant teeth grinder but I’ve had to get help to stop now.
