This is why I said that perhaps I haven't met the right cat yet. This sounds just like the kind of cat I would enjoy. As @VelociRapture I prefer dogs because I don't have to work for their affection. A snuggly cat that wants to be around me sounds perfect.

You need to get yourself a male orange tabby. In my experience, they're the most affectionate, friendly, and 'dog like' of cats. My grandparents have an orange tabby and he is truly the best cat who has ever existed. :) I think getting a cat when it's still a kitten helps it to bond with you, too.

It truly does depend on the cat. I have an orange male tabby and he's a darling but hardly affectionate. I'm the food machine and used for body heat when it gets too cold for his preference. My white cat will greet me with meows and rub against my legs.

My downstairs neighbours were quick to tell me that she cries for me after I leave the house for a bit. Mine were both feral or semi-feral, so that comes into it as well.

I second the orange tabby.  We have a female orange and white tabby (Beta) that we adopted as a kitten. She is very friendly, however much less like a dog than our all gray female cat (Bytes).  Bytes is very needy - she'll plop down on anyone's lap to get attention.

I vote for a solid black male. They're the most awesome cats. Ours fetches, comes when he's called, and even (sometimes) deigns to walk on a leash. He's a lap boy, and he sleeps under the covers on our bed.

I love dogs but I don't have the time and energy to devote to one. The other problem is my severely autistic daughter is terrified of dogs. Big ones, little ones, even the service dogs they bring to her school.

We went camping and unfortunately ended up next to the rudest dog owners ever. They refused to keep their dog on a leash so the dog kept running up to my daughter. She would just completely melt down in hysterics.  Not to mention the lovely piles of dog shit everywhere. After repeated attempts at kindly asking them to follow the rules of the park, I had had enough. We sat and watched them get pretty drunk around the campfire till around 3 am. I got up at 7 am on the dot the next day (quiet hours are from 11p-7a) and proceeded to make the loudest, cast iron skillet banging breakfast I could. They were not happy.

I appreciate that people love their dogs, but no one loves them as much as you. If you can't control them, leave them at home.

I, also, have had 3 male orange Toms. Best. Cats. Ever.

I suggest a blue Burmese.  Closest cat to a dog in behaviour we ever had.

Males are very territorial so I would go with a female if you don’t want to spend a fortune on vet bills.  Ours always seemed to fight the feral cats and get abscesses.  We tried to keep him inside at night but he would break through the fly screens.

I am definitely a cat person. My orange tabby is super sweet, although he does have his limits. My brown tabby is incredibly shy, but extremely affectionate once he gets to know someone.

We lost our beloved Yorkie, Laguna, last year and we seriously discussed not having a dog again because the loss was very painful for both my husband and myself. She was so smart and intuitive, just an amazing being. We recently got a hound mutt puppy because we have an only child (preschool age) and he was missing her and asking for another dog constantly. The new pup is fine, but we really see her as for our son and I doubt we will ever get another dog for ourselves. It’s been tough sometimes, but our son is over the moon in love and seeing the puppy and kid run around after each other is about the sweetest thing I’ve ever personally witnessed :my_heart:

Pic is a Laguna selfie. She was the best dog I’ve ever known :pb_cry:

I've never had my own cat, but have lived in a home where there were 8 cats. It's interesting watching their social dynamics. My favorite cats were the big ones (often in the 20lb+ range) who like to be spooned.

I had a beautiful orange Maine coon cat at one point in my life. It's been over 12 years since she passed away, and I still miss her.

Awww, they're adorable!! Bunnies are such chill, sweet pets- people don't realize how fun and calming they are to be around.

Here's my little Bun going to town on some cilantro:

Re: male ginger tabbies: this is my baby.received_10157043494242575.thumb.jpeg.83704144a27a237fd324e3e9f18f3cd3.jpeg

I love him more 'n my luggage, but he has cost me and my husband approximately $12K just to keep alive over his nearly 11 years, and I'm not counting food and litter.

I got him when he was exactly a year old. I believe he had been mistreated, though I don't know all the details. He is fear-aggressive and basically hates everyone but me and husband, and it took him a while to warm up to husband. We can't leave him for longer than an overnight, or he will get sick, and no one else is willing to feed him, and no one else could possibly give him his meds. He has terrible separation anxiety, you see, and stress has given him urinary blockages in the past. After his 9th blockage, he had a perineal urethrostomy, and he wasn't supposed to get blocked again.

However, he is special, and just this past September, he got blocked for the 10th time. It wiped out our savings to save him. We don't have kids, so our cats are our babies, and I was not ready to lose him. Anyway, he requires high-quality canned food, nightly cosequin, D-mannose and cranberry caplets, and a fountain. Because he isn't safe around other animals and humans, he lives in our bedroom. When vet visits are necessary, he has to be sedated.

He's high-maintenance, is what I'm saying. And I love him, I love him so much, but I'll never have a male cat again. They're prone to blockages after being neutered, and y'all, I can't do this again. We have a black male cat who also had a couple of blockages and a perineal urethrostomy. It suuuuucks.

I always love hearing about people's pets...dogs, cats, birds, bunnies... whatever. I love them all. If it were up to me we would have a few other pets in addition to our dogs but my husband is anti cat, bunny, bird, rodent, etc... So we are pretty limited to just dogs. We did have some fish and a few hermit crabs at one point but we couldn't take them when we moved so we had to give them to a neighbor (they are all stll doing great!). Our older dog is 6 and sleeps in my oldest daughter's room. Our puppy is about 9ish weeks and sleeps kenneled downstairs for now but will be moving up to my son's room when he gets a little older (right now he gets up at 5am to pee and I don't think DS would get up with him).  So I figure will probably end up with a third dog at some point. my youngest daughter is 8 and I can see her wanting a pet of her own. Honestly, I would prefer something other than a third dog but I think the dog will be what we end up with.

I love most animals, but when it comes to owning a pet I am definitely a cat person. I do like dogs, but they are sooooo much work and since I live in a city apartment a dog would be out of the question anyways. I think dogs can have supersweet characters, but what also bothers me, is that they smell bad from the mouth and then try to lick you and get their smelly, wet dogsaliva all over you. I don't have a ton of experience with dogs, so I don't know if all dogs do that, but the three dogs I have spent more time with have all farted sometimes and that smelled appaling. My two cats are very sweet and the only thing about them that smells, is the litterbox ;)

That's exactly like my BooBoo.  Solid black male rescue baby.  I got him & his sister, Princess Ahny, from our local shelter when they were about 8 weeks old.  She's a Princess to her core.  All prissy & regal.   He's my cuddle baby & we joke he needs to be sent for dog training.  No matter what I do all day, he's there to escort/supervise.  He goes to bed with me,  sleeps wrapped around my arm, wakes me up like clockwork each day for his canned food.  He has this annoying foot game he plays in the kitchen.  does a figure 8 between your legs as you walk.  Demands that you lift one foot up for him to rub against as you're standing there cooking or doing the dishes.  He'll bite your toes if you don't lift your foot.

My hubby goes to bed long before I do.  He stands at the foot of the stairs and snaps his fingers & goes "let's go Hammerhead" and Boo goes upstairs & hangs out until my hubby falls asleep.  Then he comes back downstairs to hang out with me.

My parents have a corgi, and he's a sweetheart, but also a total spoiled brat. My theory is that my parents needed a baby after my sister and I left home, and now the corgi is their baby and they spoil him rotten. I am very excited about moving out of my apartment next week to stay with my parents for the last two weeks before I move overseas, because it means tons of puppy cuddles.

And then when I move overseas, my boyfriend there has two cats, whom I've only met as meowing sounds in the background on our skype calls, but he assures me that they are cuddly little demons, so I'm very excited to meet them because I love cats as much as I love dogs.

I am 100% a cat person (and I'm happy for this thread drift just so I can talk about my cats for a minute, lol). I like other people's dogs and am animal lover in general, but I just don't want to own a dog myself due to the hassle of having to let them out, go for walks, etc. Cats are much more independent and easy to leave at home for a long weekend without having to worry.

I have 2 cats of my own. My 13yo cat is all black, and she is the queen of the house. She's an odd combination of chill and controlling. She is affectionate on her terms (but don't pick her up or try to force cuddles). She's also confusing with other people: she'll run up to people and rub against them and act friendly, but if they reach out to pet her she'll swipe at them or hiss. Everything is on her terms only. Overall though, she doesn't get into trouble and is very low-maintenance.

My other cat is 4 years old, and she's the mischievous one. She's this weird combination of being a stubborn troublemaker and being the biggest scaredy cat ever. She gets into everything (especially trashcans) but she's terrified of new people. She is very needy and will walk all over me meowing and pawing at me (usually my face) to be pet as soon as I sit down. However, she runs away if I approach her to pet her and freaks out if I pick her up. She's such a ball of furry contradiction.

Mage is our old man tabby at 13. He's pretty lazy, likes to sleep curled up in our legs, but has a bad habit of stretching himself to his full body length (he's a BIG boy!) and sinking his claws into our butts if he needs to be fed.

Smokey is our purebred Russian Blue we took in as a stray. He's brain damaged (ataxia) so if he falls he can't right himself to land on his feet and if you flip him on his back he he lays full out. His bad habit is eating electrical cords. I've lost the charge cord to my laptop and at least 50 phone chargers.

Tiger (pictured below) is one of our bottle babies from last summer. We raised her from about 18 hours old so she is a total cuddle bug. But she is CRAZY. She might be tiny but she's got a 3+ foot vertical leap and can bowl Smokey over even though he is nearly 4x her weight.

I have a solid black male cat Rico, he's a big chicken and he is not a lap cat but he is a cuddler he loves to be petted and held, he's a hugger too which we love, but he isn't one to sit in your lap very often. Now our all black kitty Mia, or Moo, because she's moody and bitchy, I got her for our daughter for Christmas 3 years ago, and it is so funny because she has the same personality as our daughter, our cat is a 17 year old girl. She's also deaf and had been declawed when we got her when she was 2. She is the meanest cat we've owned and the only declawed cat we've owned I'm wondering if that had something to do with it. She's mean but she's a lap cat, she will his and swat at you as she crawling into your lap, it is hilarious, she does all that then plops down, and don't you dare try to move her she'll come right back because she's sitting in that lap weather you want her there or not.  Lastly we have Mable she's a stripped tabby, dumb as a box of rocks and a total spaz she is also a lap cat, but she's nice about.  Her and Moo do NOT get along, Moo doesn't really get along with either cat, but she tolerates Rico, but he was there 1st so she didn't have a choice. Rico and Mable play together, they run like their tails are on fire all over the house pounce each other, and in general have a good time.

The one on the pink white and black is Mia the ball of kitty is Rico, I can't get Mable's pic to work. ;(

We have a space heater that stands up that she lays super close to. But mostly, she's one hell of a damn (and demanding) princess. Love her with all my heart, but DAMN some days!

@obiwanfreak my youngest looks just like Byes! We also have a gray tabby.

However, my uncle's Abyssinian is easily the most dog-like cat I know. He runs and greets you at the door and jumps on you and is truly man's best friend. I love that cat so much!

My dad is allergic to all pet dander, so didn't have more than a guinea pig growing up (and even that was pretty short lived). We have the two cats now, but will one day likely get a pup.
