Hope that pizza was thick crust. Not a lot for the number of people in the work party. (But then we Junebugs are big eaters. Steve & Teri have their loved ones' conditioned to smoothies & beans. All good.)

Seriously? My first thought was "why do they need 6 pizzas?" There are like 8 people.

Ha! My thought was, "Why would they order from Pizza Hut?!?!" It's the worst of the big pizza chains IMO! :D

Mulch party thoughts...

Tina looks like she's wearing a pair of boys' underpants on her head.

Why are those little girls so dressed up? Yeah, I know they are long-skirts-only, but who puts lacy, pastel-colored skirts on little girls who are working in the dirt? Seems more like an occasion for old denim frumpers.

Where's Joshua? He's been MIA a lot lately. I hope the kid isn't sick or injured.

You can see him in one of the wider shots of them all working. He's with his sisters looking at something by a tree.

Coupons, I'd venture to guess.

The Garlands of Grace chicks were mentioned recently on the Boyer thread.  Their head bands (or coverings) are badly over-priced.

But I have to give PSarah props for recognizing the spirit of the Alamo

Really? And what is that?  I don't think it is "freedom isn't free."

It might be "forced colonization of another country isn't easy."

It might be "Texian immigrants rebel against official Mexican government at their peril."

I think it is certainly "history is always written by the winners"  I imagine Mexicans have a very different perspective on the Alamo.  It isn't really a glorious occasion in US history, although American mythology wants to make it so.

Someone in the comments explained to Poor Sarah the purpose of mulch.  Mulch serves a bigger purpose than the Maxwells.

Aaand ... Sarah seems to have edited out her ignorant comment about disappearing mulch!

The Maxwells have to keep up the pretense that they are better than the rest of us sinners!

@Palimpsest, my friend,

To me, the spirit of a place like the Alamo is the tragedy of lives lost. Because no matter how right or important the cause, it's *always* way more of the little guys - the pawns - dying for somebody's idea; forced colonization or rebellion or what-have-you.

It's the ugly, stinking, universal and everlasting truth that "wars are rich men's games, played by poor men's sons."

I appreciated that PSarah did not include a group photo of the toothsome bunch smiling happily in front of the site, just as I pray no one  has a self-aggrandizing, "look at us, aren't we just adorbs?!" photo at Pearl Harbor, or Auschwitz, or any given Civil War battlefield site, Wounded Knee, or NYC Ground Zero, etc.  (I'm ignorant of Southeast Asian history other than Vietnam and the killing fields but I'll include sites there; I'll include sites on any continent.  I just don't know their names to include them.)

My extreme displeasure is for people like Doug Phillips and others who pose merrily just about anywhere, no matter how many lives were lost there, how many lives back home were broken because of the loss.

It's the insane insensitivity and irreversible sense of celebrity among people like Doug Phillips, who see any landmark as just another backdrop for their widely grinning groups, that angers me.

PSarah avoided that by not including any photos she might have taken at the Alamo and that's what I applaud.

History matters, respect for the victims matters most.  That's IMO, all others are more than welcome to their own.  Peace.

Add Anne Frank house and Normandy to that list.

Like the Rodrigues kids casually posing all over a memorial at Gettysburg (I think?) EVEN THOUGH THERE WERE SIGNS FORBIDDING PEOPLE TO CLIMB ON IT.

Fucks. Sake.

Not that we've ever seen them at a memorial site, but something tells me that the Maxwells would not be that kind of family. They'd keep the kids well away.

I am glad that others also thought "Lifetime Movie" in response to the Terri Maxwell story.

The Maxwells will be inflicting themselves on the good people of eastern Iowa come labor day weekend. I'm surprised that they hang with the Bontragers--they are way more fun that the Maxwells, go to a real church, & the girls occasionally wear pants when they hike:

Hmmm, the Bontragers have some nice looking young adult sons in that picture.

When is Steve going to get on the stick with getting Anna and Mary married off?

You know, a Labor Day picnic on a farm sounds kind of nice until you realize you have to listen to Steve Maxwell speaking (twice!), listen to singing, and can't even play volleyball without fellowshipping.

Exactly!
Slaves living in the Republic of Texas would have a different perspective on the Alamo too.

And Iwo Jima.  I still say DPIAT should stop stealing sand.

@MamaJunebug, eloquently put.  Thank you.  I agree, these are places of meditation and contemplation about Man's inhumanity to Man, not happy tourist spots.

I'm sorry for sounding so terse but that was caused by Sarah's incredibly facile "Freedom isn't Free" comment. My Irritation was not aimed at you.

My son was stationed in Okinawa and his unit was able to fly to Iwo Jima and hike to the top of Mount Suribachi. He said that privilege alone was worth enlisting; it was so moving for him and his fellow Marines. I still get chills when I remember his note "Marines dropped to their knees in front of that monument."

We have been privileged to visit Normandy and Pearl Harbor. They are breathtakingly somber, hallowed grounds. I consider those moments some of the most poignant I have shared with my husband and kids.  After each of those visits we all just sat silently for an hour or so as we absorbed it all and collected our thoughts and emotions. We were emotionally drained.

*sigh* Now I have a lump in my throat.

Desperate-to-marry Chelsy Bontrager (I think she is 25 or 26) might be interested in getting to know Hot John-- but I wouldn't wish Maxhell on anybody. Although maybe he could bring his irrigation business to Eastern Iowa.

I looked up  how far it is from * Maxwill-ville to *Bontrager-land, and it seems to be around six hours drive. That is a long way to go for 2x one hour sessions.

* I just asked google for the distance from Kansas to Iowa so not actual locations.

They're up in the way north eastern corner, and the google from Kansas to Iowa drops you in some weird place in the middle of Kansas that doesn't appear to actually be a city. I'd subtract one, maybe two hours off that total. Not sure where the Bontragers are, though. ETA: Found their city. 4 hours, 59 minutes each way. Still a long drive.

Kalona, Iowa. And the flyer above says that a free will offering will be taken (in addition to the $5 charge for dinner)--so maybe the Maxwells will get a cut of that?

This is going to sound harsh, but the Bontragers appear to socialise far more than the Maxwells do (due to their touring, which itself is due to actually being decent musicians).

For that reason, the boys will know  enough young women to have many better options than a Maxwell girl. And by "better", I mean "better looking", because in their world being a decent SAHD doesn't really count for anything above the usual, and that's all the Maxwell girls can really offer.

Not that Anna and Mary are unattractive, but there are surely prettier opinions that don't involve negotiating with Stehovah.

John on the other had has a job, useful skills, will no doubt be able to buy his own home debt free and is also pretty hot. I'm sure he's considered a catch, even as a Maxwell, and I'm also sure he's next.

Also, one of the potential Bontrager husbands is named Joshua Maxwell, and that would just be far too confusing.

Sorry, that honor has to go to Little Caesars. I've never had a pleasant toilet experience after eating their pizza, and last time I got straight up food poisoning. It's the only pizza I won't touch.
