Regarding the baby shower games, I was amused by the one Erma Bombeck wrote about in one of her books. As the expectant mother opened the presents, someone wrote down everything she said. After all of the presents were opened, the comments were read back as when the mother said on the night of conception. Yes, I know this is :brainbleach: for some, but I do have a warped sense of humor.

I've heard of this being done at bridal showers as things the bride will say on the wedding night.

This happened at my cousin's bridal shower which I attended when I was seven. Her friends began to read the things she said ("Ooooh ah!" "Wow, it's so much bigger than the pictures!" "I've never seen one like this!") and everyone began to turn red and laugh, and then look nervously at me. Being seven and having all of this go right over my head, I remember thinking, "I didn't say any of those silly things. Why the hell are they looking at me?" :pb_lol:

I see a lot of second baby showers  (hell, I had one, but he was a boy (had a girl first) and we had to WORK to get him here), but also, instead of baby oriented gifts, it's about pampering mom more.... plus it celebrates the new child coming.

NOw...when you are on upwards of 4-5 , it gets a bit much, I think, but 1 or 2 isn't bad.

I can't imagine what you'd even register for if you are having a second boy like 14 months after the first?? Pretty much everything is the same and you already have it all.

Though honestly, I don't care if you have a baby shower for every baby you have (within reason of course), each baby and pregnancy deserves to be celebrated. People aren't required to come or give gifts. I say this as someone who had no baby showers at all!

I do that , too! I had no idea it came from Erma though...it works for wedding showers, too...comments are what the bride is going to say on the wedding night  :giggle: "Ohooh, I love it!" "I wanted this so much!" Yeah, my humor is warped, too LOL

edited to add...I see @nausicaa beat me to it!

Lilly and Ellie just posted about the baby shower. It's got lots of pictures: http://www.duggarfamilyblog.com/2017/01/jessa-seewalds-baby-shower.html

Although it looks like many of them may have effectively come from the TLC site: http://www.tlc.com/tv-shows/jill-jessa-counting-on/jessa-seewalds-baby-shower-for-her-second-child/

And US Weekly: http://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/jessa-duggar-celebrates-baby-shower-with-130-guests-pics-w460728

With, of course, the requisite dual-pregancy pic with both Jessa and Jill.

Because it's the Duggars and it's hardly news and will be nonstop for them it isn't a big deal, but how awesome would it be to be expecting at the same time as your sister or best friend? My best friend was 20 weeks ahead of me, and I had my boys 11 weeks early so our 3 boys are very close in age. It was awesome to have someone to ask what was coming up next, even if she was only having one and I was having two and hers was the first time she tried and mine took IVF lol.

Now Anna being pregnant with Mac and Michelle with Josie, NO THANKS. I don't need to have pregnancy sympathy with my mothers in law!!! Just bizarre.

This is stupid, but he really LOOKS like an Elliot to me. Maybe it's just because I think it's a beautiful name and he's a beautiful kid. Who the fuck knows what a Spurgeon looks like. It's probably NSFW.

There are gifts, but they're very small- usually just a new outfit- even if the second baby is the same gender as the first. It's a way to let mum know that we're all excited for her. And it's nice for baby to have a few new things.

Plus, if baby #1 had reflux, lol, chances are all of their clothes are in perfect condition physically, but stained beyond belief! :):) I was just really glad Once Upon a Child always had 10 onesies for $10 when my refluxy twins were infants!

@clara oswin. Wolf 2 was the spit up king. We both needed changes several times a day. My favorite was when the pediatrician lifted him up without a diaper and he peed down the front of his shirt. I thought as a pediatrician, he should have known better.

When my husband was changing on of the early diapers on one of my boys, the baby was still in the isolet so my husband was doing it through the two arm holes, the baby peed OUT THE ARM HOLE and onto my husband's clothes! Talented, evil baby!

Some people thought I meant "a little spit up." Um...no. Like you said, we both needed many outfit changes.

Numerous times my refluxy babies would barf and I'd sit there triaging... 1) clean the barf off the poor twin who got it in the face 2) clean the barf off the baby who just spewed all over his brother and me 3) clean the floor and the sofa 4) change my own clothes, including my underpants!

We never had a single diaper blow out, all poop contained for all 4 (!!) years they wore diapers. I consider that my reward for being covered in vomit for 9 months.

babies grow crazy fast

Best (?) part of preemies, my boys wore most of their clothing for two seasons! They are 5 years old now and this is the first time they are really outgrowing clothes while they are still in season! We used to get two years out of winter coats. They wore size 12 month shorts from 18 months until 3 years old. Those clothes lasted forever!!!

My best friend and I were both pregnant at the same time, just 3 weeks apart. It was fun having someone to bitch about glucose tests and stuff to. I think we only have one picture of the two of us together during our pregnancies though, but it was more of a coincidence and not a "stand the two preggos side by side for comparison" thing.

To your other point, I have a cousin who was pregnant at the same time as her father's second wife and it was ALL KINDS of awkward!

My best friend lived in another state from me when we were both pregnant and I think the only time we saw each other was when she was 20 weeks and I'd JUST gotten a + test, hadn't even seen the doctor yet. So if we have a pic it's me being super skinny from infertility stress, not super huge from twin preggo belly.

Just thinking about having a baby at the same time you are having a baby sibling is so odd. Thankfully my mom was in her late 50s when I had my boys! lol

I've only been to one baby shower, and it was just maybe 12-15 people at most. Seemed pretty standard to me, as the organizers only invited those of us who are in the same grad program with the expectant mom. But the comments about not having multiple showers for future kids but only having "sprinkles" made me wonder if normal baby showers are usually much larger?

Just gonna leave this here... 100% real names. Some of them I actually like, others... not so much. Thanks, Utah!

Good grief!  And I bet many of them are Mormons so they can't say they were drunk when they were spelling the names.

Eleanor was my grandmother's name.  She passed away at 94 last year.  I'd love to use that name in the future!  Her mother's name was Isabel :)

My Eleanor Jean was born 8/13/16.   (Honoring my great-aunt Eleanor and my MIL's middle name.)

Incidentally, this is my very first post!

i love names, and i found this video on youtube. these fundie-looking ladies discuss predictions for both jill and jessa's babies. they're first on the video so you don't need to watch the whole thing (unless of course you wish to!) i found their reasoning interesting and plausible.

It is just so crazy to me the midwives they're seeing haven't risked them out of home birth after their first experiences, that's not only incredibly unethical, but super illegal in CA.

What is it with fundies and midwives anyway? My mom had a midwife instead of a doctor at all of her births after the first (at least she went to a damn hospital). Why is this midwife thing a trend, why would you want someone LESS advanced taking care of you?

Has anyone seen this video on Jessa's second baby shower? I noticed that Jana and Joy's voices and the way they talk are EXACTLY THE SAME! I couldn't tell the difference.

Because Jesus. I think. That's their reasoning for everything else though, so I'm gonna go with it.

Technically, I was pregnant at the same time as my sister. She gave birth two days before I got a positive test in February. That was with my miscarriage - our kids would have been about eight months apart. Instead, thanks to my peanut arriving six weeks early, our kids are a little less than ten months apart.

You can't really go by months. Weeks are how pregnancy is really tracked because development tends to happen on a daily basis - so going by months isn't helpful in letting medical professionals know what's going on. I'd say, Jill could be anywhere from around 12 weeks to around 15 at this point. So likely in the second trimester now.

You also can't judge her bump size too much. She had a big baby first time around and her muscles are more relaxed earlier on this time because it's not her first pregnancy. That, plus the size of this baby, placenta placement, position of the baby, etc. can all impact bump size. How big or small a woman carries isn't that important as long as she and the baby are healthy.

I wouldn't necessarily say midwives are less advanced than OBs.....

Most midwives* go through lots of training, probably just as long if not longer than OBs. A lot of midwives were nurses as well.

The biggest difference between a midwife and a ob is their attitude. Midwives tend to believe that childbirth is a natural process that shouldn't be intervened with unless necessary. Obs tend to view it as a more medical procedure.

*This does not include the "midwives" we've seen with Jill and Jessa.

I've always assumed a lot of fundies (not all because some do go to doctors) do the midwife thing because 1) they are almost always women and some fundies are weird about male doctors 2) it's probably cheaper than a hospital birth. And if you plan on having 10 kids, giving birth as cheaply as possible is probably all they care about.

Ugh, painful. I'm sorry. Not the same thing, but I found out my best friend was pregnant the day we found out we had lost our state grant for IVF. For a long time I said that was the hardest day of my life. I was just devastated. Thankfully we paid out of pocket for the IVF cycle instead and the grant program was reinstated eventually and when my boys were 10 months old I finally got our grant money (covered only part of it but when it costs over $12,000 to get pregnant, every little bit helps!!).

And agreed on how you carry meaning nothing about baby size or health. I have a friend who I swear at 9 months pregnant looked like she'd swallowed an itty bitty basketball. From behind you couldn't even tell she was pregnant and even with the belly she looked at most 6 months pregnant. But her baby was normal size, 7ish pounds, and born after his due date by a few days. I was carrying two babies who were only 2lb each (so 4 lb of baby when they were born at 29 weeks) and was pretty much measuring full term! From like 20 weeks or so I was at least 5 weeks ahead. My favorite stories are the twin mamas who go full term and are measuring 50+ weeks at the end. I can't even imagine.

Not true in all cases. When I was in a slowly progressing labor 30 years ago, my OB did nothing as long as the baby was not in distress, despite my wanting to get her out by any means necessary after 36 hours. And when I was finally put on pictocin, there was no rush then. I eventually delivered vaginally.

I think what you stated is a popular misconception.

I although think that the education and training that medical doctors, particularly specialists, undergo should be recognized as the gold standard. However, other highly trained medical professionals are perfectly capable of handling many routine health matters, including normal childbirth.

It just depends on how comfortable you are with risk which level of provider you choose. Geographic availability is also a factor. No one I knew had delivered other than in a hospital with an OB, including my mom. So, it wasn't on my radar screen to consider anything else. Plus, my doctor was wonderful, and had been my long time gyne. He personally called several times during the first trimester to check on me

TLC needs more stuff to film, so why not pay for a baby shower for Jessa?

They've already filmed a baby shower for Jessa. Remember the guys shopping for/making baby food? The scene at the store was actually the first Jeremy sighting.

Interesting... with the girl name prediction for J'Ben, I really don't see them using Elisabeth Priscilla - and if they did, I think the names would be switched so that it's Priscilla Elisabeth, given that Elisabeth is the more conventionally popular name (and I see them reserving those names for middle names). Elisabeth is just too common a name for them to pick from my perspective, though I imagine if they read this post they'll jump on that to prove my heathen self wrong. lol

Also, Anna already has a sister named Priscilla, and I don't see her and Jessa being so close as for Jessa to just be like, "Hey I'm gonna use your name for my baby!" when they've known each other for years.

As for the Dillard predictions... I can very much see them using those names, for better or worse.

Back on the baby shower, I always do a treasure chest. Get a wood chest from Michael's, fill with diapers, wipes, Bordeaux ButtPaste or Anti-Monkey-Butt, burp cloths, hand mitts, and binkies or bottles IF they are on the registry. Later the chest can be used as a memory box or small toybox. Pretty much stuff every baby needs, whether its the 1st or the 10th.
