I never really got them as a couple beyond them both liking to tell people they're going to hell, so I'm not sure if they're all that different to me. I always try (and often fail) to remember that we can't really assume we know much about these relationships based on these scripted moments. The one big thing I'm taking away from this show now is that every single one of them is hyper-aware that they have a particular image they're trying to project and they're terrified of failure. I'm getting a kick imagining them poring over online comments after episodes air, determining if they were successful and what they should do and say next time.

Jinger saying she'd rather not answer that question is shades of Jessa's "we're not ready to make any announcements." That's girl is courting.

I think after tonight's episode - that is what they like about each other - that everyone is going to hell except them because they are the elite.

so You think that Ben realizes he was being perceived as a tool - only to become even more a of a tool and not talk at all - even though he is the one to want it the most - I am beginning to not to believe that so much

and clearly Jessa's image was being shallow - so what does she do - show herself as more shallow and just not that aware but of anyone but herself.

In junior high, one semester was Home Ec. and the other semester was "industrial arts" (aka wood shop). In high school, I took a class every year, that fell into the Home ec. realm (it was an easy A). Like my sophomore year, I took a class called "Independent Living", and it was actually quite useful. It was all about budgeting, balancing your checkbook, paying bills, and other assorted stuff. I took Child Development too, because I wanted a flour bag baby.

I hated Home Ec in sixth grade. Our teacher was horrible, one example was when we made tacos from scratch she wouldnt let the vegetarians in the class make a beefless version and then threatened to dock grades for those who didn't eat it.

If you follow that indicator:  all of them!

ETA:  none of the other girls have that mannerism

I actually think Bin and Bless have a good amount in common. They both like to tell other people they're going to hell, they both think they're more important than they are, they both dislike doing real people work. But in all seriousness, I do think they probably have interests in common, because they courted for almost a year and they must've had something to talk about. It doesn't change the fact that they've lost allllllll their chemistry. They weren't this awkward at the courting phase or as newlyweds.

I think it's the show

:D

Whoa, I totally missed Anna telling Jessa to check Ben's social media (I never could stand to hear her speak so I don't pay much attention). That is the wrong way to redeem this family, TLC.

"Jinger is good at talking" says Jeremiah, then proceeding to do all of the talking the entire time they are trying to sell the car, with Jinger barely in frame.

But yeah, SHE is totally selling HER car. She's so independent...

Besides holding the paddle at the auction and picking the car, what exactly did Jinger do to flip this car? Joy and Justin worked on it and now the twins are selling it for her

if you fast forward through Jessa's THs, she looks up a lot:  talking about Bin, about Jill in Central America; about life and adoption.

Jinger as entrepreneur. She has roped Joy into cleaning the car for her. Car is a bit disgusting.  Joy is cleaning, Jinger is bitching. Jinger just refused to answer a question about her love life.

Justin and some guy are looking at the junker’s engine. Jinger is rattling on about how they all learn “life skills”, not just cooking & cleaning.  She’s really irritating.

Now Jana and some J’s are at the lumber yard…J.D wants to build something “grand” . Now we have large trucks and the building of a “cabin on Stilts” with a wrap around porch and a ramp. JD thinks he and Jana work together pretty well….Jana insists that JD is the brains of the operations.  JD and Jana do seem close. Jessa says they are a team.

Jana was just asked if she trusted JD to find her a husband. She says yes.  Apparently there is someone on the horizon for them.

They are now setting posts with multiple children underfoot. Good plan.

Jinger is now attempting to sell the care…her brothers think she’s “to o nice” and would give the car away.  They admitted it was an auction car, originally said it was “my sister’s car”.  The Bro’s just said she’d make a pretty good car salesman because she’s good at buying clothes.

Now they are dickering with some guy on the side of the road…Jinger says its hard to talk to a “complete stranger” ….Although she never spoke at all, little brother negotiated a deal. That feel through, but the car sells a few weeks later for $500 profit.

Teaser for next week…Tree fort construction and a baby shower.

My reading of Ben and Jessa as a couple is:

Ben wanted to be famous without really having to do anything. Jessa wanted to get married and start a family. They both wanted to have sex. Their goals coincided, so as prescribed by their religious subculture, they got married.

That's not to say they don't genuinely love each other or aren't genuinely compatible. I'm sure they do, and on some level they are. I'm just not sure that if they had a more mainstream lifestyle, their degree of connection would necessarily have resulted in a marriage.

But of course that's just speculation.

I don't get the impression that Jessa wanted to start a family per say. I think she wanted out of the TTH and live somewhere else.  I do think she fell hard for Ben who I am sure was charming.

I do think she was in love with Ben who woooed her because she was famous. I do think Ben wanted to be famous and he saw his ticket to a ministry.

But clearly it's not working.  Something has happened and it's showing.  That or they were just adjusting which I will think

Maybe they do love each other and are happy behind the scenes.  But the scenes that are showing - they are both coming across as something else.  I don't enjoy them as I used to to snark on them.  And  Jessa around others doesn't translate well.

Not watching this hot mess, but did I really just read that in a segment supposed to highlight how enlightened and non-sexist the Duggars are, the only skills that Jinger's brothers managed to praise her for were being good at "talking" and "buying clothes?" TLC is totally mocking them with this, right?

Regarding looking up while talking means you are lying.  In my case, if I am looking up and left I am in my memory, scanning in order to reply.

I have never heard John-David speak as much as I have in this episode. It's great that it seems as though he finally came our of his shell.

I think part of it may be that Gothardites think once you got the girl, her job is to serve you, not the other way around. In a courtship the guys pursue the girl and put all that effort into her, but then in marriage the effort is largely from the women.  Ben put a lot of effort into courting Jessa and now that they are married (and once the novelty of being newlyweds wore off), he may have settled into more of who he is (dull, unobservant, kind of annoying) and may not be putting off that same "we are courting love me you're famous and attractive have a million flowers romance" vibe. Maybe Jessa is picking up on that. If I were being negative I would say she is icing him out for not being romantic enough, but it could be as simple as picking up on that shift in their dynamic and not really knowing how to respond to it. I mean she thought she was marrying courtship Ben, who is probably a lot different than everyday, make me dinner, clean the house, be my helpmeet Ben.

Spoiler

Oh my oh my oh my oh my.  :confused2:

I swore to myself that, after last week, I would not comment on this week's episode.  I lied.

First -- WHY oh why do DerJill insist on calling Israel by "Choo Choo"?  Still makes no sense at all.
Also not making sense:  Letting Choo Choo gnaw away on a standing electrical fan!  HELLO?????  Danger much?
I don't care that Izzy has two new teeth and the "vibrator" feels good on his mouth.  (Barf.)
32 ways to a bad accident in that one shot alone!
... and Jill chooses to chastise Izzy for pulling diapers off a shelf?   *angry head bang*

Next - Bin actually scored points for watching his own kid.  Until placing him on the couch to nap.  *continue head bang*
Seriously - that kid is big enough for his age that rolling over is imminent.
Agreed that all chemistry is gone for Bin.  (possibly related to watching his wife birth a toddler and then hemorrhage??)

Now on to the auction car.  Props to Joy for taking a class on detailing cars.  Actually a smart idea.
Fast forward to cleaning up other people's filth ...
WHY are they not wearing rubber gloves for cleaning up trash and rotten food??? (Personally, I would've donned a haz-mat suit!)

Carry on.
...
Much happier to be watching The Willis Clan.
At least that bunch is talented, hard-working, actually does school, they cook & clean, and have personalities.

P.S.  We already know that Dances with Flamingoes is on next week's episode.  Gah.

I wonder how the Duggars feel that their show is such a...dud (for lack of a better word) compared to the Bates. It seems the Bates were still in the frumper stage and not as "normal" as the Duggars, and now they have far surpassed them at their own game of seeming likable and relatable. That said, it almost makes the Bates worse. People would never want to be a Duggar based on their public image now, but the Bates can lure you in until you find what they actually believe. I feel like Jessa is the only one who really realizes this.

Don't know for sure why this picture won't go away for me, but I thought that babies were not supposed to sleep or be unattended on those pillows.....and I can't remember what they are called. (my kids are grown and never used them)

Even my Canine Headship is bored to death with tonight's episode.  Not even the sound of the cookie package can wake her now.

Oh Duggar-Dullards - what have you done???

It took three people a couple of weeks to make that $500? Good thing they don't actually have to support themselves!

It's nice to hear Jinger has a hobby, but I'm not really seeing this as Jinger with a career as the family had previously implied. She still has no ability to be independent or support herself if she so chose, and the initiative doesn't even seem to be primarily her own.
