And this is good. Considering the over-involvedness of the family, I think it was a good sign that she decided to wait until whenever she got there. I mean, this is a family where the parents are advising the soon to be married chidren and their intendeds, weeks before their wedding about sex which I personally find squicky, intrusive and serious boundary crossing. I know that it might not appear as that intrusive to them in their world, but in light of that it just seems interesting that Alyssa waited to share this information.

Alyssa seems to really be enjoying her life as it is now. I know she loves her family but I can't help but wonder if she really chafed under their rules / lifestyle and was more than ready to get the hell out. When I first heard she was engaged to get married at 19, my first thought was "oh no" but now I think she knew exactly what she was doing, rather than blindly following the fundie rules for how fundie young women should live their lives. She took the rules and made it work for her. I suspect she followed her parents' rules because there was no other choice of course, but used it as her ticket out, meaning courtship (or dating with a purpose or whatever the hell Kelly calls it) leading to marriage leading to getting out of there. I wonder if Kelly and Gill feel a bit duped seeing her rock short, sleeveless dresses and jeans. Let's face it, they were controlling fundie parents who actually instructed their adult children about to get married all about sex, which I find super intrusive as well as squicky. So I don't doubt for a moment they are feeling a bit shocked over their daughter's seeming exit out of fundieland.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think that she used John as a ticket out. I can see she really cares for him and he cares for her. They seem a happy couple fully enjoying life. But she saw her chance and took it, that girl, she's smart.
