Okay, but try TRY VERY HARD to put yourself in the mindset of a Midwestern grain farmer who doesn't watch Fox News or MSNBC because he's busy tilling the fields till sundown...

Some guy comes in the picture who even Hilary Clinton is slamming to pieces. He has a name that sounds eerily familiar. Only 7 years ago the World Trade Center fell down, and the situation in the Middle East ain't pretty.

What do you think this man will do, and can you blame him? He didn't go to college and sit next to a moderate Muslim student who could school him as to how the majority of Muslims live in America. Instead, he hears one or two rumors about a man named Barak Hussein Obama and how his Dad was born in Kenya, and he believes this could be true, because it's never seen before.

And it was not a red herring that I brought up the situation in North Korea. People are easily indoctrinated. The same principles that lead right-wingers to become birthers, or certain radical left groups to value extinct species over in-country human rights violations, also cause people living in a strict communist regime to believe the Jong-ils are heaven sent.

If people are afraid THEY WILL BELIEVE IT.

So... people's racism should be excused if they're morons?

Both my first and middle names are French. Oui, oui! I hate Americans!

What's the deal with the Muslim thing? Even if he were Muslim, which he's not and of course it wouldn't matter, there are American Muslims. It has nothing to do with being foreign.

Je soupconne que cela a un rapport avec la guerre. Tout comme les chretiens dans l'ensemble sont presumes etre des fanatiques disposes contre les invertis, les Musulmans sont tous ranges dans la categorie de terroristes...

It's just the way things are.

And how many Midwestern grain farmers do you know, pray tell? Most of them are in a cab with A/C and full media access.

Why do we even have middle names? You don't even need one legally, it's just a tradition, right? Where did it get started?

I don't know. I don't have one. My father doesn't have one. My brother doesn't have one. My brother's kids don't have them. My father's sister doens't have one. My one cousin gave his kids middle names because he had twins and he felt the girl's name was too short nad needed augmentation and then decided he couldn't give a middle name to one and not give one to the other.

I have a confirmation name, which I considered using as a middle name, but quite frnakly, I'm not into reminding myself that I ever practiced Catholicism. I'm very happy to just have two names.

Racism, no. Xenophobia is largely what fueled and held together the earliest tribes of humans. It's a consolidating force and I know it plays heavily in many cultures.

So I guess it depends on your cultural values. If your goal is preserve and maintain, you have to prevent new faces and ideas from entering in...which is largely how North Korea and Taliban function.

America does not function this way. Just as Obama is commonly referred as a "socialist", I'm not so convinced his person is what they fear, but more what he might stand for. After all, for quite a while his approval rating has been markedly higher than his performance. A lot of people find him likable.

Yeah, that's pretty much what's been said about every social problem. But the ones who say it are NOT the ones who bring about change.

I've always liked my middle name because it's Anne, and I liked having an "Ann-with-an-e" like Anne of Green Gables - one of my favorite books when I was young. :D

I am really amazed at how many people do not seem to grasp this concept. They will shout, "It has nothing to do with racism" (in regard to reflexive hatred for Obama), and then to proceed to hold forth on how he is different, exotic, "not one of us", "we don't know where he came from" and all sorts of silly crap. But no, they're not one bit racist or xenophobic and these sorts of remarks are not codewords for anything.

Thank you, Austin. This was part of my original comments, some pages and many clean carpets ago.

Just because some of the major institutions of racism (like anti-miscegenation laws, slavery, etc.) have been taken down does not mean that effects from those institutions does not continue to ripple down to generations today, and leave certain groups SYSTEMICALLY at a disadvantage compared to other groups. And people continue to be systemically treated differently, whether or not that different treatment is formally encoded in laws.

God, this may the most disingenuous, bad faith conversation I've ever had about racism on the internet. And that's saying something.

Are we perhaps talking to some kind of evo-psych enthusiast? I know there has to be some insane theory tying all this stupidity together, somewhere in the background.

Oh, fer chrissakes, do you live in the 1950's? My uncles and cousins ARE midwestern grain farmers and they're all over facebook, reposting news articles, playing farmville, etc. Maybe you're thinking of the Amish?

Both sides need to focus on the most pressing issues of the country- the economy and the job market. Gay marriage is not an issue compared to the millions of Americans without jobs and the new graduates coming out of school with no prospects and a degree they can't pay off their student loans for. As a college student, this is what I and my peers are most concerned about.

Maybe it isn't an issue for you...but my wife just lost her job because she took time off to help take care of me while I am ill. If our marriage was recognized, she would have been protected by fmla. For us, gay marriage is a huge issue...
