Single Parents Are Child Abusers

Dr. Drew had this jerk on his show last night, along with experts on family. I only heard the first few minutes of it, as I had to do something else, but yeah. . . bad dude.

Whoa.... I have no coherant words for this one... as a single mom, one who has NEVER been on welfare (my son is on medicaide but only because he's disabled and un-insurable), this is beyond fucked up. Yes I was unmarried when I got knocked up, but I did not ask my son's father to run as fast as he could when he couldn't handle my son's disabilities. I am not dependent upon anyone except myself (baby daddy owes me over $19,000 in child support and ran away to another state). This dude needs to get a clue. My sister is also a single parent after being divorced, and runs her own marketing consultant firm and makes lots o' money. She isn't dependent upon the state either. I can tell you that none of our 3 kids collectively has ever been abused.

There are lots of things that contribute to poverty, single parenthood can definately be one factor. But that has absolutely nothing to do with child abuse. Most of the families that we follow that use Michael Pearls methods to ABUSE their kids are 2 parent, christian families. This guy really needs to talk to some real people and do some real research.

Republicans seem to be having an internal contest to see who can be the biggest asshole. And they seem to be randomly selecting targets. What are they going to campaign against next? Kilts? Cashmere? Indian food? Opera?

I wish republicans would just give up the war on women and address some real issues for a change. This shit is getting boring. Its like they're having a contest to see who can be the biggest idiot while ignoring the economy, another war looming, hungry kids, education, full employment and equal rights.

You're exactly right, experiencedd. I saw the article and went all ape shit and "I'm a single mom and I do good!!!", and that's what they want. They want to stir the pot. I gotta learn to ignore the twatwaffles when they spew. As you said, what is he (and countless others) doing for jobs in his district? When was the last time he proposed an energy bill? A jobs bill?

I am beyond angry with politicians and others who like to denigrate single moms. Santorum recently whined that single moms were destroying the fabric of society. As a single mom, I am doing a damn fine job raising my son. His father is part of his life, but I have always been the primary care giver and financial support. Guess what conservatives? I'm doing a damn good job, and better than yourselves because I don't feel the need to resort to hitting my child in order to make him "behave." In other words, eff you and your stupid fears about intelligent women with education and/or skills to such a degree that they are self-supporting.

No wonder Republicans are losing women voters (and Latino voters, etc.).

It's things like this that make me glad I left the Republican party. I'm now a proud Independent! :)

Me too, except I am now a proud socialist.

Noting that 41 percent of children born in the U.S. last year were born to single parents, Grothman said: "It's a very politically difficult thing to deal with because over time you're having more and more families that are not old-fashioned families. There are even people who make fun of old-fashioned families."

Where? I'm watch a lot of tv and listen to a lot of radio, and have never heard anyone mocking nuclear (which is what I assume he means by old-fashioned) families as a concept.

I find it interesting that even though he talks about children being born out of wedlock, he does nothing to distinguish the variety of reasons for single parenting - in his mind the widow, the divorcee, the lesbian couple and the unmarried woman are all equally guilty of child abuse. The whole idea is just...

This really discounts the fact that there are GLBT individuals who are single parents because they aren't legally allowed to marry.

That was mentioned in the article:

The way the law refers to "nonmarital parenthood" also makes this applicable to non-married couples, including same-sex couples. S.B. 507 reads:

Section 1. 48.982 (2) (g) 2. of the statutes is amended to read: 48.982 (2) (g) 2. Promote statewide educational and public awareness campaigns and materials for the purpose of developing public awareness of the problems of child abuse and neglect. In promoting those campaigns and materials, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

Section 2. 48.982 (2) (g) 4. of the statutes is amended to read: 48.982 (2) (g) 4. Disseminate information about the problems of and methods of preventing child abuse and neglect to the public and to organizations concerned with those problems. In disseminating that information, the board shall emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect.

That's why I included the lesbian couple, because by law (in Wisconsin, anyway) they aren't a family, it is two single women (even if they've been living together and committed to one another for years).

Grothman is a Republican, so he's probably opposed to letting gay people get married and/or have children. He's got to be sure this law won't hurt his base of supporters, since everyone knows single parents and homosexuals are all Democrats. ;)

Where is a nuclear family mocked? Um, check your address bar. We do it here, fundamentalist families tend to be nuclear. Not that I see a problem with FJ.

Well that's true, but they are being mocked for their fundi-ism, not because it's a two parent household. This politician was claiming mocking of "old fashioned families", and I haven't seen any evidence of families being mocked solely because the parents are married.

Take Josh Duggar; he's mocked because he's bloated, he thinks himself smarter than all the evidence points to, he thinks Santorum has a chance of winning a national election... no one has mocked him solely for marrying Anna before she got pregnant with his kids. Anna's gotten some snark too, but mostly because she chose to marry Josh and turn into Michelle, not because she got married and then had kids.

I wouldn't agree with that - here at FJ, we snark on specific people for specific actions, no one is or has mocked the nuclear family for simply being 2 parents and 2.5 (or15) kids. This guy in Wisconsin is drawing a conclusion that simply because kids are brought up in a single parent household, they are automatically more apt to be abused.

I just sucked one of my eyeballs through a straw to relieve the pressure build up in my head after reading this. I was raised by a single dad who worked is ass off in less than stellar conditions all the while never once raising his hand to us. Not to mention we were housed, fed, reasonably clean and educated. WTF is this?! They are so going to get kicked to the curb in the November elections. Fuck them, fuck them, fuck them... I HATE THEM. How's about fixing all the 2 parent families that belt their kids, feed them crap and keep them ignorant before working out the problems of single parents. Oh, and try actually meeting a few.

Nuclear families aren't even old-fashioned. They are a father modern creation.
