Political discussion on Bates blog..

These people are single issue voters and without contact with the real world they will define politics and political platforms to fit within their narrow world view. They have no grasp about what working folks have to deal with on a daily basis. Nor will they ever concede that all politics are local.

Plus they don't understand what their choices would reap. they just what they want and don't care what will happen if they get it. Really just overgrown children. I think this happens when you depend on god to make your choices since you don't have to be responsible

Were Ron Paul supporters really breaking in and glitter bombing???

Even if they were, if we are supposed to judge a person by their crazy supporters, then we should be judging Santorum on Joshie mocking special needs students and the entire SC school system.

Not to mention Catholics!

Word.

I was just wondering if she saw those people and thought, "Oh, that must be Ron Paul's supporters."

Oh i missed saying anything about that! Isn't that delicious? It's like the most liberal she can imagine being is a Ron Paul person.

Also, how do you "illegally break in" to a rally? Are they private?

It's a good thing she missed the 'Rocking like a HurriCain' rally in Charleston last Friday. Her brain might have exploded.

She said they were Ron Paul supporters because Gil told her to. She only knows about the glitter bombs because Gil told her. Gil was told these same lies by some other fundy guy that just made this crap up. None of these people are reading or listening to the news.

This nearly single issue politicking is baffling to me. They seem to react so crazily to the 2 issues that are least likely to affect their lives. Surely health care, the economy, poverty (!) should concern them more. And yet they don't even seem to want to hear about them and, in fact, seem to be dead set against any politician who might do something that would be in their own best interests. Odd head space.

Welcome to America. I grew up in Appalachia and when ever they interview some of my toothless, healthcareless, jobless, homeless brethren they all rant about how ebil Obama is, emphasizing that he's a Muslim (because NOTHING good comes from THAT (and Catholicism too)) and talking about the influences of big government when my state takes in nearly 2 dollars in aid for every 1 dollar of tax we send in.

How do you argue with these people? Everything Obama wants to do would help the area in so many ways. Yet the state voted against him by 80%. I think its a combination of ignorance and letting TV ads be their political information source.

My guess is no. Paul doesn't take a strong enough stance against same sex marriage for the Bates. In their eyes that means his supporters are responsible for the glitter bomb incident.

Reporting something as fact when you are uncertain if it is true is called lying. The Bates should add that they are only making a guess about who the protestor supports.

edited to make all my verb tenses correct.

The Bates should add they don't read newspapers. If they did they would see that Occupy claimed responsibility for the glitter bombs. The vid clips online had the glitter bombers shouting 'we are occupy'.

Actually, Kelly, if he is proposing the federal government deal with those issues, he is the exact opposite of a true conservative -- no governmental interference, remember? Wait, that's just on other issues, like religionizing the school environment. Or how many kids you're allowed to pack in an 800 square foot house. The important stuff.

Ugh, this drives me crazy about American politics right now, and I've got 9 more months of it. My poor high schooler, who is studying World History, talked with us for two hours trying to understand the definitions of "liberal" and "conservative" in the US vs the world. Even Wikipedia has to put "American" qualifiers on everything.

I feel for him. This confuses me too.

I don't know "liberal" as a compliment. I would use it as an insult. People where I am from do not say "I am a liberal". By a process of trial and error I worked out Americans use it to mean "I hold some left wing political opinions" and that they don't like to say "left wing" or "socialist".

"Conservative" generally means "I am a fucking mentalist who will defend the most bizarre positions known to humanity" but that is the same here ;) Though I think when libertarians argue their POV they put it much better than the God and guns types. I do not agree with them, but they aren't telling me crazy shit like "Jesus would support limited nuclear strikes on the Middle East" (actual quote).

And by the way, Kelly, you need spelling lessons. It's "disagree" not "dissagree".

Kelly is dim.

Edited to add: If she were permitted to read newspapers she would know Occupy admitted to all of Frothys glitter bombings. Hell they were shouting it on the videos.

riffle

There is a faction of the Occupy movement that supports Ron Paul, so perhaps these folks were responsible for the glitter bombs?

Well, well, well... I checked their blog and they deleted my comments about the death penalty, Rick Santorum and Separation of Church and State. Typical I guess. I guess my questions were a bit too "controversial" for our simple minded Bates. I'm also pretty sure they blocked me from commenting on their blog.

Conservative states receive proportionately more tax dollars than liberal ones. Because their policies work so well. :?

Just walk through a red state and say, 'God laid it on my heart to run for President because the United States is on the pathway to hell. If elected I will single handedly stamp out baby murdering abortion and sinful gay marriage which is an affront to all God fearing Christians.' The Duggars will loan you a bus and speak on your behalf...well, right there is reason enough not to do that, in fact, it is reason enough not to visit a red state. Why take a chance?

Yeah, I find it's incredibly odd that people in the U.S. support the candidates who would do them the most damage. My sister is a staunch conservative. She supports the candidates that are for smaller government even though she's on food stamps. Sometimes I wonder if she realizes that if they had their way, her kids would most likely starve. Huh. Maybe she's just not smart enough to realize it.

It does seem like those who scream about smaller government are always the ones on welfare/food stamps/medicare/medicaid/social security/WIC/etc. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

To paraphrase The West Wing, they want our government to be just small enough to fit in our bedrooms (and our doctor's offices, for that matter).

My dad does the same thing. He signed up for social security the split second that he turned 62 and he freakin' loves it. He didn't really need it because he's a certified general contractor and he runs his own shoestring home-repair business, but he likes the bonus money so that he can go on fishing trips and weekend getaways. Now he's developing cataracts, but he's going to wait until he can get on medicare to get them treated  It never seems to occur to him that if the conservatives he loves so much had their way, none of those things would have existed in the first place. Or he's convinced himself that if the government hadn't "taken" so much of his money over the years, he would have been able to save it for his own retirement and medical expenses, nvm the fact that he's terrible with money. I think his brain has been pickled by rush limbaugh.
