I like the 'moral of the story, don't date' tweet. Joshie's marriage is the best endorsement of dating I can think of.

Btw, what was the story that warranted the telling of this moral?

Turn your tax return into cash? Are those signs a part of the car lot? If so, that's another financial scam Josh runs. You get a loan that's equivalent to your projected tax return, minus some interest Josh makes, instead of getting the full amount back from the IRS. This is money for the desperate/uneducated. Only slightly less shifty than a payday loan. JB really taught him all the angles, didn't he?

But, but, but it's ok. They dress modestly and remain virgins until marriage.

ETA: It could say 'turn your tax return into a car'. Same scam, though.

Well, that's particularly abhorrent.

What would Jesus say about all of this? Somehow I think he might have ranked Joshie with the tax collectors...

They're legalists. Religion isn't about love, doing the right thing, or a personal relationship with God and Jesus. Oh no, it's just a list of rules that must be precisely and unquestionably followed, so that you get to go to heaven and be an emotional robot forever! Doesn't that sound really fulfilling? :?

Yeah. The bible story Josh seems to be acting out is the money changers in the temple.

I was just thinking about the 50% down thing.

Say he buys a car at auction for $2,000. He marks it up 100% so now it's $4,000 (yes, this happens). He sells it to someone who put 50% down ($2,000), and that person finances the rest.

He has just made the money back that he put into it, and then the rest of the $2,000 comes to him in drips and drabs, PLUS interest, if the person continues to pay (many don't keep paying at the tote-the-note lots).

If the person stops paying, he goes and gets the car. He sells it again for $3,900 this time because it has more miles or whatever. Yet, it's all profit at this point because he already got his money back on the 50% down payment.

What a racket.

I'm beginning to understand where the term "sleazy used car salesman" came from.

It definitely appears to be some sort of tax return (less a crazy fee) scam to me. Wow, nothing like "integrity" showing its true colors!

What the hell is up with that? Don't they have normal shoes? It's pretty dangerous to be moving things without proper foot coverings.

Seriously. The total disregard to safety when it comes to the girls' footwear is appalling. I'm still disturbed when I think of them traipsing through whatever the hell country it was to give out their solar bibles in their flip flops. We moved last August in 100F+ heat indices with god-awful humidity and I even made the 6 year-old put on socks and shoes to keep her feet somewhat safer if she got in the way of something.

Re: flip flops, I know barefoot and pregnant is just an expression, but maybe there's something it the Bible that says women should bare their feet? So in order to come close to bare feet but still not step on dangerous things, the Duggar ladies wear flip flops.

Doubt it. I think it's more like, flip-flops were huge in the South ten years ago, which is right in line with fundie sensibilities, and most teen girls will probably wear inappropriate footwear if given the chance (I know I did) thanks to the general teen feeling of imperviousness. But unlike most teens, their parents focus on the "big issues" of "having their hearts" instead of actually parenting and paying attention to their safety.

I think wearing flip-flops is just their thing. I wore flip-flops all the time as a teen, too. Gothard is quite anti-flip-flop, from what I hear.

Remember Handmaid's Tale? The part about not needing hands and feet to do what god requires of them?
