We have consistently said no to my in-laws who frequently want us to visit with our 3 kids. The law here limits leaving one’s house, with a list of acceptable reasons like getting food or travelling to jobs where you’re unable to work from home. No more than one visitor to your home at any time (designed so people can still let in essential services like plumbers). Visiting holiday houses are specifically mentioned as not acceptable. There’s a 6 month jail term and/or $11000 fine attached to breaking these laws. MIL still thinks she can drive up the coast from Sydney (where they live) to their holiday place 15mins from us, so we can get together at Easter. She’s been sending messages trying to guilt us, asked my husband “are you sure you’re not using this as an excuse not to see us” and when he raged at her she turned to me and tried similar, “please don’t cut us off” and “you don’t understand how upsetting this is for us”. I responded telling her she’s welcome to FaceTime any time but it’s AGAINST THE LAW and for good reason, and that I’m really unimpressed by the implication that it isn’t upsetting for us too or she’s the only one missing out, when my sister is due to have a baby soon who I won’t get to meet for ages.

Yesterday letters arrived in the mail for my kids. They opened and read them, all excited to have mail. Then I read them. The bitch has told my SIX YEAR OLD that she has “lots of yummy things and presents for you” and “we hope to see you at Easter”.

I applaud the Australian government for fining those not taking the CV restrictions seriously.  I wish the U. S. government (or at least individual states) would do the same.

It actually amazes me how many people really just do not get it, and assume it doesn't apply to them/is part of a [insert conspiracy] take over, etc. My parents and in laws seems to have finally have been convinced, although I still haven't managed to FaceTime with my MIL and son. You try getting the damn iPad off him if it's in view.

I've been speaking regularly with a few elderly relatives and friends and keep having to fucking repeat the precautions they need to be taking.  I don't want any of them to die of this.  Some of the problems are likely memory-related, some are "I can't deal with all this" whining, and I'm pretty sure some of it is them thinking I've always been a worrier so perhaps I'm worrying too much.  Unfortunately, it's prime time to worry and to keep worrying until it's safe not to.  These people are all essentially intelligent but some have others coming in to help (who I'd like to think are following precautions), I believe none of them are sanitizing food packaging though I keep reminding, they're not being careful with mail, and they seem to be semi-careful about wearing a mask in hallways and elevators and trying to not directly touch things (e.g., elevator buttons, door handles) that others regularly touch.  A few are in the NY area so you'd think they'd already be terrified enough to maintain distances, but apparently not.

My main accomplishment today has been to hand wash a pair of jeans.  It wasn't as bad as I thought but they're going to take forever to dry.  Nice to be wearing a(nother) clean pair of jeans though.

My in-laws are upset that we won’t come for Easter.  They’re both high risk and Mr 05 is an essential worker.  We refuse to be responsible for exposing them.  Of course, they’re running all over the place like nothing is wrong anyway.
Meanwhile in Appalachia, half the family is taking it pretty seriously. But one set of cousins is using the shut down of their state to have more parties and gatherings.  Basically every night for the ones laid off their jobs.
I’m personally struggling with the fact that with a massive sub shortage in both of my school districts, they have made the choice to pretend we don’t exist while our livelihood is shut down. It’s just discouraging when you put your heart and energy into doing the job and doing it well

What is wrong with her?  Has she always been like this, or has she lost her mind with this shutdown?

She’s always been a manipulative narcissist but I did think things had gotten better over the past 3 or 4 years. I don't know how our relationship will survive this.

This! Same thing happening here.  I tried contacting the Union President, the Local rep, and the School Board. Not one has replied.  I get that they are busy and very stressed about getting Distance learning up and rolling, but at least they have a paycheck coming in. Fuckers always throw Subs under the bus.

Yesterday neighbor across the street had people over.  This morning the house two down from him had someone over.  People this isn't what we're supposed to be doing!!

I have neighbors who had people over last Saturday....they had a bonfire out in their yard with (who I am assuming are) extended family members- I walked my dog by a few times. There were some older people there along with some young kids and all ages in between. AND there's a group of 4-5 houses down the street who have been letting their kids play together every day and the moms go on group walks every day- they're not staying 6 feet apart from each other. My dog and I stay well away from everyone when we go out. :shakehead:

I was coming home from a dr. appointment yesterday and down the street from my house, there were about 15 kids on bikes, congregated in the park.

There were younger ones - maybe 10 or 11 - but mostly teenagers.

What the hell are their parents thinking?

Some of the parents could be at work and have not idea what their kids are up to.

I just heard of this incident where a locomotive engineer deliberately tried to ram into the USNS Mercy , a hospital ship .

From the Timeline YouTube channel.  Historian Dan Snow speaks to a public health historian about pandemics.  Sounds like this will be a regular feature for a while.

Reminds me of the comedienne who said her aunties would poke her belly and cackle and say "You're next! You're next!" at every wedding. She said they stopped when she started doing it to them at funerals.

Well that old joke sure got a bit darker in this year.

My cousin's wife, who is due this month with their 2nd child, and works at a hospital as an x-ray technician, posted an article on March 10th about how we're panicking too much about COVID-19 and there's no reason to close anything.

I feel that article has aged poorly.

Has she X-ray'd the lungs of her first CV 19 patient?  That said, not every place has CV 19...YET and for those folks, it might seem very far away.  However, as early as the  second week in March, I started seeing reports of rural counties in Texas -- with a county seat of maybe 2,000 to 5,000 people, reporting their first CV 19 cases and the situation can't have gotten better.

Also, there is close to zero information on what is happening to the fetuses of pregnant women who have CV 19.  I just recall what was going on with Zika virus and it wasn't good.   From NIH in October 2017:

Quote

It is known that prenatal infection by Zika virus is associated to disrupted nervous system development, leading to typical neurological disabilities and deformities. Some children present progressive ventriculomegaly and hydrocephalus associated to aggravation of seizures and neurological impairment.

If it is shown that CV 19 infection leads to miscarriage and birth defects, it will get everyone's attention fast.

She hasn't mentioned anything more about it, except a post yesterday about how she's grateful for their little house as they shelter in place. I don't know when MI got its first case, but according to the MI COVID-19 map my home county [which is pretty rural] has 56 cases so far, with 1 death.

The people dismissing this as hysteria don't seem to realise we're not through the worst of it yet. I also don't think they understand that 'shelter in place' isn't to keep people from getting it, but to keep the healthcare system from being overwhelmed and leading to unnecessary deaths.

Looks like California caught its backlog up.  They added over 75k negatives and “only” 1300 positive

Michigan announced the first two confirmed cases on March 10th. I live in the Detroit metro area and hospitals are close to the breaking point right now.

Ahhh that explains it. I live in WA so we began closing things down March 4th. It is amazing though, how short-sighted people can be!

A vent: I have a cousin who tends to be a know it all in good times and when any sort of crisis—personal, family, local, whatever—hits, that tendency goes into overdrive. Needless to say a global pandemic has her preaching to everyone like she’s the potus, pope and chief of WHO rolled into one.

Today’s installments via social media and email are to tell us that those members of the family who have essential jobs are just pretending their jobs are essential. This includes her sister-in-law and nephew who are working in grocery stores and her brother and Mr 05 who work in industries that support agriculture.  If you all want food now, groceries have to be running. And if you want it in the future, Mr 05 and her brother are going to have to work.
She also went after family members who are “whining about unemployment”. Apparently, we’re supposed to happily be not paying our bills for the sake of staying home to save others and if we don’t like it, it’s our own fault for not having jobs we can work at home. Because society will function so well if the only jobs are those you can work at home. FTR, I’m one of those offenders. But if anyone here has filed for unemployment right now, you likely know that the overrun system is frustrating.
But my biggest problem with her is that she is sitting in her house four states away from all of us pontificating about all of this while the rest of the family is here working essential jobs and caring for elderly relatives. Including her parents. Currently her 61 year old brother is running all their errands making it impossible for him to stay home.  She’s 12 years younger. It would be a lot safer for her pontificating ass to be here taking care of them.
