Doug Phillips (is a tool) resigning!

Been camping all weekend. But no I am not surprised. Michael stipe was a collegiate debater and it has been speculated for years (as in 20 since I was in high school and a debater) that the song is actually referencing a cross ex policed debate round. Given the involvement of the Jeubs in debate I am sure they would have heard it at a minimum there. But they are more worldy than others.

And I hate to say it, but it feels weird when I agree with Chris.

Wow, really? As someone who dabbled in debate (and was shitty at it) I need to know more about the basis for this! I would never have guessed that song to be about debate and it's awesome if it is.

"When you read all of Jen's story as told in the book Quiverfull, she states several times quite clearly that she still believes in biblical patriarchy. She sought out the BCA church because it was so much more patriarchal than even the Southern Baptist Church she grew up in. She wanted the rules, the order, the accountability of that type of "church". Her quibble is not with patriarchy or wifely submission, her fight with the Phillip's revolved around her belief that they were actually too legalistic in enforcement. For instance, she believes in women dressing modestly and only in skirts and dresses, but does not believe there should be any rules spelling out specifics in the church. It should be voluntary on the part of the woman.

In addition to her speaking about her theological concerns to the Tool publically, which is totally unacceptable for a woman at BCA, things escalated when her marriage started breaking down and she went to the Phillipses for help. She thought she and her husband were getting confidential counseling. Dougie and Beall had a letter drafted and read to the congregation accusing her of gossiping against her husband, not being joyfully submissive, being a "Jezebel", etc. She was essentially told to stop talking about her lousy marriage, shut up and pray about it, or face excommunication. She and her husband eventually were both excommunicated.

Huh! I guess when you relinquish adult autonomy, you run the risk of having decisions made for you that are not to your liking. There's a part of me that wants to understand why anyone would volunteer for this, and there is a part of me that is just exhausted by it all.

I have a proposal:

From henceforth until the end of time, the 30th of October shall be known as "the day of the tool." Celebrants shall carry their favorite tool, smile subtly at a member of the same sex, and consume atleast one screwdriver.

Doug Phillips is a tool.

First time poster - this is major news and I wanted to join in! This isn't the same woman. I don't want the woman's name listed here because of search engines, but I promise you it's the same woman who wrote this book that JUST came out with VF:

The product listing is here:

I happen to be acquainted with this woman (I grew up in SA and know several of the families involved, including one of the elders that helped expel Jen Epstein. Anyway, this woman is the same one being present by Phillips Is a Tool in that picture. She's unmarried, but had a short engagement with one of its young men. I don't know why, but it ended pretty quickly. No details were given on her facebook page at the time. She also runs this twitter account: https://twitter.com/prolifeprayer

Yea, Jen buys all the kool-aid, just not when it applies to her and her family. No sympathy here.

Also no sympathy for Be-All. The little wifey hurt by Doug Phillips the tool. She is a horrible person who has ruined other lives with her toxic beliefs. Now it's her turn. Boo hoo.

COLLEGE?! Why, that shameless hussy! Oh, wait, Beall went to college, too. Golly, for a guy who thinks women shouldn't go to college...

Edited because I only had her first name there, but still...

Very interesting!! I actually saw that post about the woman who wrote the book, on Doug's blog, and thought she looked awfully similar to the woman Phillips is presenting in the conference photo, but I am not very good with faces so I let it go. Kudos to danniesgirl! for clarifying, and hopefully helping us ensure we don't drag anyone's name through the mud. I imagine it could be really devastating for a VF girl's name to get associated with Phillips' affair, even if the actual object of the affair turns out to be someone else.

But would Doug have posted about this woman and her book on both his blog and VF's Facebook post as recently as October 25th if indeed she was the problem? Doubtful.

Obviously, I don't think his refusal to name the woman is surprising, but in his resignation letter he doesn't even apologize to her or ask his followers to pray for her. He wants it known that he was "romantically" involved with a woman, but then acts as if... she doesn't even exist.

Now, yes, that could be because "he's a lawyer." Or because Beall's in some kind of rage. Or because women aren't fully human to him. But it could also be because she doesn't even exist.

Interesting. She liked the following Facebook post from March:

Nowadays, Christian teachers routinely address the problem of sexual sin in regards to men looking at porn and lusting after women, but they rarely address the problem of women inviting men to lust. Let me say this loud and clear to all you women: Suggestive dress and suggestive body language is sin. There's no getting around it. The woman who sends the invitation to look is just as guilty as the man who accepts it. - Mary Kassian

I personally don't want to start "oh, could it be HER" games about a bunch of strangers, tarring them wtih the toolish brush of Doug's bad acts. Given their tendecy to publically humiliate women in their circle, I'd say there either isn't a woman, but they knew that whatever he really did would be considered far worse.

And I hope in the long run, it is....

Thanks for the clarification, danniesgirl - and so much for my facial recognition skills! I'm happy to be proven wrong.

What makes me angry is that Doug can be redeemed in all of this, but the woman likely can't. I hope she isn't married because infidelity is just a terrible thing for people to suffer through but if she isn't married and in the patrio-centric movement she is likely "ruined". I expect her father will marry her off to get this shut up and that will hang over her life forever.

Doug however gets to publicly apologize, barely step down and will likely be forgiven.

Fucker.

I don't necessarily think it's her (though, in that world, anything is possible). I do think it points out just how beautiful and perfect is this world that Doug has created. She, like the nanny, has a brother is incredibly beautiful. Not that all of VFers are beautiful, but those are the ones that are chosen to represent the rest. It all looks so perfectly appealing.

Yes, she has a degree, though I would be 99% sure it was mostly done through CLEP and the like. That being said, I hope she's a little too smart for being stuck in something like this.

____

On a side note, can I add my favorite Doug story that makes me laugh like a maniac every time I think about it? I worked at a conservative organization several years ago. Thank God that ended, but I was fresh out of college and needed pay the bills. Anyway, I went to a major homeschool conference to man a table for work. Doug and VF were there and of course, I knew who he was. I was incredibly struck by how people were drawn to him - they followed him around in droves. He was never alone.

Anyway, on the last day, I was closing up shop and I moved a very large floral display for a friend. After I had done so, I went back to my table to look for something, when I found Doug sitting there (it looked empty, no big deal). I asked him if he had seen this item, and he looked at me startled. He quickly recovered and very politely said no. I didn't know why he had that reaction until I saw my friend a few minutes later. Apparently, I had rubbed a LOT of flower pollen all over my face when I carried the display - my face was glowing. I think I scared him!

The more I think about this, the more "mechanical" the whole letter seems. You dont just wake up (with another person) one morning, scream "oh shit," and start drafting your resignation letter. This has been a long time coming. From the lack of greece pics, the delay in the film festival, to the failure to print/mail a catalog, the organization has been circling the wagons. The letter was likely part of a well scripted and negotiated turnover, cleared by lawyers and consultants. Dougie didnt just fail to side-hug, he didnt just kiss on the lips, there has to be more to go to this extent of trouble, expense, and risk to the organization.

Doug cannot stand before the sheeple and proclaim the strength that is biblical manhood. He cannot hold himself as an example before the community. He has to step aside to end the questions - if there was one "woman," were there others? In the same sense that a courting couple cannot be left alone together lest they start fucking like rabbits, Dougie cannot be trusted to travel unsupervised for speaking engagements. He will be locked away with his family, forced to blog and write books about repentance, rebuilding your marriage after infidelity, sin, and temptation. Since he now has this expertise, he has not been removed from the money making arm, as his books and eventual speaking tour will be useful. The defunct "law school" may even make a resurgence.

Doug Phillips is a tool is not going anywhere. We'll still have plenty of his blathering to snark on. Hazardous journeys will continue and Dougie may even go along, but he will no longer be the head... for now...

Perhaps an urban myth, but a politician in a very, very safe seat was supposed to have said, "As long as I'm not caught with a dead girl or a live boy, I'm safe."

Just sayin.....

The History of America MegaConference, where the hand-holding-onstage pic was taken, was held July 2-6 of this year. Voddie Baucham, on the Voddie Baucham Ministries Facebook page, says that Doug resigned as elder of his church in February of this year. So again... If she was the problem, would this happen five months after he resigned from the church?

I would be shocked if we have ever heard of this woman before. My guess is that there was a power dynamic in play and anyone who would engage in such a horrible and sinful non-sexual relationship is someone that wasnt raised in the kingdom of brainwashing, or is new to the kingdom and was attempting to self elevate. I do not believe that a woman who already had power (through her family) and believed all the tripe he spews would engage in a "long term" anything.

He didn't resign from the church, he resigned his office. I really don't think he would have resigned because he felt guilty-he's been quite happy to push the same old sexual purity/submission crap right up to this weekend. Given his behaviour, I doubt he'd resign because of his affair, only if he was caught and was forced to.

However, the fact that he resigned is interesting.

I have no idea how the leadership is supposed to run in that particular church but in the (Fundy, reformed) church I grew up in retirement was possible but it was uncommon and illness or some sort of very serious family or job stuff were pretty much the only reasons.
