Close Encounters of the Fundie Kind

I recall when I was a few years younger, there was this super fundie family I knew. They were at my church and were at first nice. Yet as I got to know them, they were very radical and super conservative. The mother was sweet but the father was somewhat off. I noticed it too in their kids. Well to make a long story short, they were wolves in sheep clothing. The father tried one Sunday to confront the pastor and was belligerent. The man wanted to take over and control everyone.Thank goodness the cops were called on them. I mean these days you have to be careful of those even in the church..

Funny story from my husband:

He figured out a weird diagnosis for a patient. The guy was so happy about getting a diagnosis (even though the condition itself is very serious) that he said he was grateful for my husband coming in on the Sabbath and mentioned that he also goes to synagogue - a Messianic one. He added, "you know, it's really very similar to an Orthodox synagogue", and then proceeded to say that Jesus had obviously sent my husband to heal him. Hubby wears a yarmalke so this guy knew that he was a religious Jew.

Fortunately, my husband is tactful enough to avoid rolling his eyes or getting into a discussion about how Messianic Judaism is NOT like Orthodox Judaism. He just smiled, said something about all worshipping the same God but not really wanting to get into a big religious discussion in the hospital. I'll just tease hubby all weekend about being Jesus-sent. [He likes the patient and is happy to get some appreciation, even if he doesn't believe in the whole faux-Jew Jesus-sent-you thing.]

On September 11, 2012, these five men holding signs about gays, feminism, atheists, non-christians, etc are evil came to my university.

I yelled at them, "Do you have to do this today?" I figured that statistically and geographically speaking, there are bound to be people at my school that lost family on 9/11, and I doubt they would want to see a such a blatant display of hate that day.

(Also my school has pretty sizable LGBT and Jewish populations, so they were bound to offend a ton of people.)

I came back a few minutes later and a huge crowd was there, debating/yelling at them and holding signs of their own.

I stayed for a while, asked/yelled why if Jesus is God, why does he have to sacrifice himself to change a rule he wrote himself. I'm Jewish so I never really got this part of Christianity. This really sweet guy in the crowd tried explaining it to me (something about Jesus being the human part of God) but it mostly when over my head.

Anyway, the men had a camera set up behind them. I heard a rumor that it was because if someone punched one of the guys in the face or something, they would have proof and be able to sue the school. I go to a state school, so I don't know if that would mean they could sue the state too.

I eventually had to leave and go to class. I took a bunch of pictures that day, including this one of their card. Has anyone heard of these people? I've been wondering for months. Something similar happened the year before, but I'm pretty sure it was a different group.

I've never seen Jed, but when I was going to Portland State University in Oregon, one of his disciples, Preacher Dan, would come and preach on campus. This was in 2004-ish. Preach Dan became a Messianic Christian and completely lost it. Tried to hire someone to kill his wife, whom left him for abuse with their six or seven children. Then, after fleeing to Alaska and getting transferred back to Oregon, he threatened the life a judge. Don't know if he still preaches at PSU, but he still runs a website and youtube:

Yes! Smock and his broad Cindy were here last week during the sex cells event which teaches about sexuality and not to have to conform to gender stereotypes. I missed this crazy show and just now found out about it reading my campus newspaper.

I never meet or see fundies. I live in Sweden and even though I'm sure they must exist here they are very, very, very rare.

But a few weeks ago there was a erasmus short program were lots of people from all over Europe came to learn about Teacher Identity in Europe at my uni.

Among the students was a middle-age British woman who originally came from Nigeria. She was really nice and everything and we talked a lot but then she found out that I'm gay. She asked me "are you serious?" a couple of times and then she asked me if we can have a chat later. We have been discussing and discussing about everything so I said, sure, because we were all the time talking.

But then, when we sat down she told me that I must have been corrupted. I am so sweet and innocent  and my girlfriend is clearly taking advantage of me. I look really young so maybe that is why. I said "yes, I am sweet and innocent... and gay." One doesn't exclude the other. She said I need a man to take care of me. Then she said that "god made the rod and the hole for a reason", (the rod, the rod!? why would she call it a rod!? Why would I want anything called a rod anywhere near me?!) I don't remember everything she said to me anymore. But I know that at one point she asked, "what can two women actually do in bed?" I thought it was rhetorical and didn't answer but then she was quiet as if expecting me to answer. I mumbled something about us having hands and mouth. Ugh, and somewhere in the conversation she exclaimed "aha! so you do admit that you need egg and sperm to make a baby." I think I must have rolled my eyes at her then. I mean, gosh!

She said that she is very nice because her husband would not even be able to be in the same room as me he would find me so horrid. She asked lots of invasive questions about me and my girlfriend. She liked that my girlfriend is practically black because then her parents would set her right.

She didn't get to me in the least, but I still felt uncomfortable afterwards and one might say that she kind of ruined the evening for me. Then the next day she gave me leaflets about her church (the charismatic church) things is, I'm christian but Lutheran (and my girlfriend is Catholic!).

That is the first time that has ever happened so I guess I'm lucky.

And she wasn't really fundie, just very conservative. She wore trousers and showed cleavage. (while I funnily enough was wearing "modest" long sleeves and long skirts  )

Oh but the funny thing - she teaches as well (it was a program for teachers or teaching students afterall) and her favourite subject is inclusion and she works with teenagers. Inclusion my ass.

Christian fundies are rare, but we have a fair share of muslim fundies. I just listened to an imam from the mosque in Malmö who talked about "men having the right to have sex with their wives... and with the girls that have been taken in wars against the infidels..."

I am hoping to find a snarking board like this about islam.

When I was in Cameroon (very close to Nigeria) I had a hard time with the fact that any "acts of homosexuality" are ILLEGAL there. People just can't even wrap their minds around anyone being gay. The previous American intern that my organization hosted before me was a lesbian. She had been gone for over a year and they STILL talked about it. This was at a liberal women's rights organization, so I was doubly surprised by their attitude. It's possible that this woman was raised in a similar culture; however you said that she is also British so she must have been exposed to SOME homosexuality.

Not really a close encounter, but I was over at my mom's house and she had left her FB page up on the computer and one of her friends had lots of pictures with the Duggars at the latest ATI conference. Jim Bob and Michelle matched. The Jslaves were in the background looking bored.

Parents have just call me to ask me to teach music to their ... 15 children (baby 16 on the way ...). They are homeschooled and are Christians (so non-Catholic - there are ten prostestants maximum in my city, and they are gone -). I'm going tonight to see their level in music (I have to teach them to read music, trumpet and trombone.) I'm really scared to find Duggars bis (more, she told me five names: Alexandre , Annaëlle, Alice, Arianne, Aurora ... 15 children-A ?). This is really strange as situations. I would tell you tonight :)

Well, I just got back from my Duggar family bis. 15 children, whose name starts every time with the letter A the first are very classic names (Alexandre, Adam, Alice, etc…), but others are very old and very "bourgeois" (okay, google translate don’t translate bourgeois, so I hope it is also an english words). They live in a BIG house. Really. I come from a very poor district, where everyone is tenant of a flat, and I was just « ……… Wow. What is this… house ? Palace ?». Their house have 10 bedrooms, etc…

I spoke with the mother. She does the homeschool to her children BUT the last state control was negativ, so they have obligation to scholling their children. YEEEEEEEEEEES !

She wants « private lessons » because she « know that the conservatories are for poor, professional musicians, and socialist. » I was…

« Herm, my dear, I’m poor, I’m communist, and I’m professional musicians. Can you stop to insult me please ? »

The level of children’s music sucks. On the 5-futur-trumpet-student, 3 wanted to play another instrument. They are badly behaved, wicked with their brothers ans sisters.

But I love it. I hope that I can teach the buty of trumpet to this children, and I hope that I can help one of them to escape :highfive: !

What intrigues me is what religion they have ? I mean, here you're an atheist, Muslims, Catholics and, in my city because there is a large community, Jewish. Protestants are in the east, near Switzerland. The evangelical / Baptist and all the religious diversity that you have in America, are for the African very poor around Paris. But ... Here ? You can't be a Protestant, Evangelical and Baptist in Toulouse ! It's a mystery.

So, the children were dressed normally, and she told me "You coul let them play what do you want." Good thing, trumpet is made for jazz !

I think I have just had the fundie sighting jackpot!!

I just got back from a historical reenactment and guess who was seated next to me? Beall Phillips and children! No sign of Doug, though. We were actually in line together at one point and chatted a little. She seemed very nice, a little soft-spoken. I got the distinct impression that she's not quite so extroverted as her husband. She had kids going in every direction so she seemed a little flustered but very pleasant. Seeing her up close for as long as I did, I really don't think she's had work done as some have speculated. I'm guessing she's mid/late 40s and up close, she does look about that age, and I'm guessing that she knows how to apply makeup very skillfully.

One thing did stand out to me - the boys were all wearing t-shirts and jeans (or shorts in one case), but the girls were all dressed up. Nothing very costumey - just knit dresses and skirts kind of like the ones I buy at Target or Old Navy to live in all summer - but I did notice that they had their hair done more formally, wore a little makeup, etc... They all seemed to be having fun, though. And I have to say one more thing - I saw JT trying on Civil War gear at one of the vendors. He is handsome, but he also seems very aware of it. He was preening in the jackets and you could see him trying to attract the attention of girls walking by. My friend (who is NOT a fundie watcher and had no clue who he was) even noticed it and thought it was hilarious.

Well, mine is no where near as big as yours, but it was hilarious to me anyway.

We have a rack of medical pamplets at the door to our clinic. It has power of attorney forms, educational tracks for medications we give, information on medic alert bracelets, etc.

Friday, my co-worker stepped out to put a lunch tray in the collecting cart in the hallway and came back in looking like she was about to erupt like Mt. St. Helen's or something.

Someone stuck a Chick track in our rack.

It got thrown away immediately but my co-worker fumed the rest of the day she was SO upset that if one of our patients saw and got offended by that garbage sitting there she didn't know how she could ever apologize enough.

Is Amish fundameltalist too? I saw them a big group in Jerusalem on a tourist visit. Not exciting as to see the Duggar family or Maxwell family, though I think, because the Amish people dont preach to convert every one like fundy does, so maybe Amish are not fundy, too??

Not very exciting, but I had my first "real" fundy sighting. I see big families at my grocery store fairly often, and have had suspicions (long denim skirts, flip-flops, polo shirts...) but the other day at another store, I saw a teenage girl walking around with her mom. The mom was in a t-shirt and long denim skirt. The girl was in... a long-sleeved 1850s-ish dress. MADE OF DENIM. I had to go to another aisle to avoid (them seeing me) laughing, because it was just so fundy. The dress would have been attractive too (as an 1850s dress) if it had been a different material - the top was fitted (!!!) and had a row of buttons down the front like a blouse except it was all one dress. Whoever made it was a very skilled seamstress.

GenerationCedarchip, thanks for sharing about Beall!

No problem. It was actually kind of interesting to see the family up close because I have to say they look a lot more mainstream/normal in person than on the various websites. If I wasn't already so familiar with Vision Forum, I wouldn't have batted an eye at anything I saw when I was around them. After the battle was over, Beall Phillips was even letting the older kids go off to the encampment (which was like a small town) on their own to go shopping.

I did see a few other families who looked much more obviously fundie than the Phillipses did - denim frumpers with tennis shoes, women with head coverings, etc...

Oh yea, may be they were not Amish. They ladys wore white small caps and farm dress style , the men white shirts with suspender straps, beard but not mostashe. I dont remember exactly, it was a couple of years ago.

Ok here is the edit:

The Amish are famous for shunning modern technology, yet they waived this restriction by boarding cars and an airplane in order to arrive in Israel for their apology. Both in the U.S. and Europe, the Amish have had a history of anti-Semitism, believing that Jews have been “replaced†by Christians and even that Hitler was G-d’s agent in punishing the Jews for their rejection of Jesus.

So yes to the one who was a smartass or maybe dumbass to say they got to Israel by sailboat, they came by jet airplane.
