David and Priscilla updates

If those first generation Quiverfull parents had the collective self awareness that God normally bestows on a patch of radishes, they would realize that they have effectively set up their descendents as this country's permanent underclass. Priscilla and her children will pay for the collective sin, and it really is a sin in every sense of the word, of a culture that rejects education, medicine, and critical thought. Tragic on just the individual level of Priscilla and her kids. When you multiply that by all the Priscilla Wallers, Anna Duggars, and their children involved in this movement, the consequences can be unbearable to contemplate.

It's brought up as a teaching point in their video where they announce their upcoming blessing. We're taught that all life is precious, and that Priscilla's start in life was difficult as a xx week old preemie (sorry, I just can't watch it again!!) but that God brought her and her family through her early days just as he will protect her now in bearing her first child. Unlikely that she had early intervention, since that's typically done through the medical and school system, so here we are, nodding and repeating after the headship.

I work with teens in the public system, after 13 years' or so of interventions, and some of them still talk like Pris does. Sometimes, that's what happens. Pris does have the parrot talk, and were she one of my students, we'd be working on using a teenager voice, not a baby voice and 'cute' talk - in consultation with an excellent SLP. I hope Pris is happy - my programming is all about improving and maintaining a high quality of life and happiness.

My heart still breaks for her - David is obviously bored with her from the VDay vid, and has realized that she has delays. I hope that Pris gets the support she needs to parent her blessings (let's face it, in the secular system, there are supports for people with intellectual disabilities who become parents, although they're probably not adequate... another thread...), but I fear for her, not even really being part of a church community - one downside of the home/independent church movement is that the traditional spiritual community is eroded.

Agreed. I have to wonder if Priscilla is so sheltered/innocent/simple-minded that she considers the way he speaks to her as being nice to her. She doesn't seem to mind (or be aware that she should), whereas most women wouldn't put up with that kind of treatment.

I kind of see her as living her dream right now. She's married to a cute guy with a future, who claims to love God and who (right now, anyway) treats her like a precious object. She's wrapped in cotton-wool, all fuzzy and happy.

There are some rude awakenings ahead for her. It makes me sad.

I totally agree!

To me it looks like David was having a good time a year ago, you know - courtship, excitement, living on his own, all the upcoming sex, blablabla .. and I guess he believed the shit about "any God honoring girl will do just fine" (omg I remember his tacky courtship) and that such things as personality or peculiarity are not for real. But now he sees the real deal and seems bored with their daily routine.

Priscilla seems unable to live on her own! And I really really wonder if she has some delays or is just soooo indoctrinated and brainwashed...I'm begging that she is just doing that stupid talking for the camera!

The whole "cleaning your wife by reading to her" is sooo creepy...and wow... "my human love doesn't last very long" - I'm so sorry for her!

That part of the video really sent shivers down my spine. When fundie men 'confess' to that kind of stuff, it never bodes well. It reminded me of the way Steve Maxwell wrote about his anger issues, in the earlier parts of the Titus2 blog. Confessing to it in a normal, happy tone of voice as if to normalise their behaviour.... not good at all. :?

That was painful.

They remind me of Thunderbirds.

Nah. The International Rescue Team may have been puppets but they smoked and drank and said mild curse words. And then there was that Polynesian sex slave, Tin Tin. It's no wonder Matt and Trey are so enchanted by them.

While musing about the first time they'll meet their new baby boy, David actually said the words, "I can't wait to see what his flesh looks like!"

Way to dial up the creepy a little more, David.

Her voice reminds me of Mira Sorvino's as the prostitute/porn star in Mighty Aphrodite...her weird high-pitched quality.

Nobody tell Pris and David that, they'd explode.

Made my flesh crawl, too.

He's completely clueless about what this parenting thing is going to be like. Of course, in their world that would be normally be okay, but poor little Pecan Waller is starting off life with two completely clueless parents who actually believe he's soaking up Bible verses in utero.

I think it's saying sooo much that he never commented the crib controversy but took the page down...

He did? I must have missed that. He must read here, right? Hi Davey!

Can you explain what causes someone to continue with the baby voice? I'm confused about the term developmental delays. If someone has a delay, can they "catch up" or will they always be "behind"? Is having a developmental delay the same as an intellectual disability and is an intellectual disability a low IQ or something more/different?

Also, does anyone think its possible David didn't know Pris had these issues until AFTER they got married, since they aren't exactly allowed to have private conversations about anything/be alone. Or maybe he did know, liked the idea because she would be more pliable but now realizes the situation is really more like parenting than marriage.

It was also a very brief courtship and it sounds like David was getting pressure from his parents, and maybe even Gothard himself, to find a bride. Marrying her may have seemed like a good solution to his problem at the time, but after a year of living together, I suspect David now understands the extent of her limitations and that he's not pleased. Hence all the phony "fun, fun, fun" shit and the slip-up admission that his love is "tired and worn out". He's a creep; I can't see him having any patience with her.

Just a guess, but the baby voice could be a combination of her training to "keep sweet" and her genuine immaturity.

It was bugging me for a while now just what Priscilla's situation reminded me of. Then I remembered a movie I had watched with my mother years and years ago http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056183/ called "Light in the Piazza". (this was a tough find, but gotta love IMDB which searched it with my crappy memory for the key words)

The basic story was that this young woman had been brain damaged by an accident and had the emotional/mental age of about 10 years old. This didn't stop her from falling in love with a rich Italian who only needed a loving and beautiful wife. Brains were not required.

This makes me think of the ideal Fundy wife. Pretty, soft spoken, not too bright. Especially in this case as Pris will never think to question David's sexuality.

I just simply_cannot_understand how these two ever got pregnant...I just can't imagine them doing the deed.

I'm so watching that movie.

People with learning disabilities (if that's the case for her) usually still have healthy sex drives. If anything she may possibly be a little less inhibited than your average fundie, if she hasn't understood the nuance around the shame that is heaped onto women for feeling sexual thoughts. I feel sad for her though if, as it seems, she is all loved up waiting for David to come home from work, and he arrives home 'worn out and tired' most nights. :(

Priscilla takes the cake when it comes to weird husbands. Sorry, Anna. You used to have it, but she's definitely got you beat. David is such a weirdo! He's not shy about supressing his gay tendancies. It's so obvious that he's a homosexual. Does Pris not know what that is?

What does David do for work? Does he actually work, or does he pretend to, like his brother-in-law Smugger? These two are not ready to be parents. I can't wait to see the post baby blogs, and how crazy they're going to be.
