I think they won’t be able to help themselves

I would guess that Josh's very expensive lawyers have told JimBlob, Michelle and Anna that until the appeals process is complete, they should cut out the conspiracy theory crap. And that means keeping Michelle and Anna out of public view completely. I think that JimBlob is just as vile, but I think he has a better grasp of what will play with the non-lunatic fringe. For example, I don't think he would have said, as Michelle did, that lots of families in their cult have problems with sibling sexual assault. I believe Michelle and Anna are so far out in la-la land that they would sound completely unhinged.

In my opinion, a dignified silence is best for now. They put out a brief, non-committal statement after the verdict in December, and they should stick with it.

I don't recall anything in the book about Elizabeth climbing trees as a child, or a preference for simple clothing. Her clothes are probably simpler than her wealthy friends (as Mr. Collins observes) but I assumed that was a matter of cost. Does the book discuss her choice of clothing?

As for Caroline Bingley, she was just looking for a chance to diss her.

You are right.  Elizabeth does not climb trees nor does she prefer plain clothes. We get very little description of her clothing.   The business about her skirts getting muddy is because she feels Jane needs her but Mrs. Bennet won’t let her have the carriage.  (And it’s just eagle-eyed Miss Bingley who sees the mud on her petticoats and probably exaggerates it.)

That pisses you off? Why?

Josh did make choices, terribly ones. No one forced him to download those videos. It was his choice to commit disgusting vile acts.

Because it completely downplays what has occurred. Which makes me think, do they fully grasp the crimes that he has committed? What have they been told in the TTH about what has been going on.

I think it’s a good sign that Jason is using Josh’s words since it is the template provided for him but coming to his own conclusion. It shows promise.

"Your dad likes to watch babies being b***ed and r**ped !" The "naughty pornography" explanation won't help them deal with that.

"Telling them slowly" would be ideal, if the kids lived in a box. They don't.

Honestly, I can't think of anything that would confuse a kid more than the phrase "Naughty pornography." A five year old wont' know what pornography is. A ten year old won't know what's "naughty" and what's not. That's not simple, truthful or honest. Unfortunately, they'll get the truth from the kids around them, or the tabloid they find in a friends bathroom.

I wasn’t proposing the exact wording, “naughty pornography,” so much as trying to put it a way that it might be described in Duggar circles.  The exact words don’t matter.  It was just an example.

Since these kids are pretty sheltered, it is unlikely they will have peers telling them what Josh was really watching.  It’s not the same as when kids go to school.

Nevertheless, I agree that the kids should be told the truth.  I just don’t think they need to know everything right away.  First they need to process that dad did something bad and is now in prison.  Next they may want more details.  As they show more interest, clear, accurate answers show them they can trust the adult they are asking.

I agree with this. They're also the consummate aggrieved martyrs. The rest of their lives will be how unjust they were treated, and their poor golden boy.

The golden boy who they raised.  Can't blame schoolteachers because they taught him at home and can't blame older siblings who helped raise him, because there were none.

So much for raising up a child in the way he should go and having him not stray.

Well yes but it's not THEIR fault, or HIS fault, it is just because of SATAN /s

Personally, I think a huge non-verbal message to kids is Santa & Easter Bunny pictures. <snip>

It has always broken my heart to see those pictures and hear those stories of how "cute" it was/is.

Yeah, I have never understood that in the least.

I don't think it necessarily does. In the context of their world, I really like the use of the world "choice." It acknowledges that Josh chose to do these things. He didn't have irresistible impulses, he wasn't overtaken by Satan, he himself made the choice.

Which made what Henry VIII did with Anne of Cleeves almost chivalrous. Instead of banishment or beheading, she was told if she stepped aside she’d be adopted as the King’s sister and given titles, land, homes, a place at court. She took the deal.

This is completely off topic, but I just had to comment. Henry VIII really shot himself in the foot by divorcing Anne of Cleves. She would have made a perfect Queen of England. Anne was incredibly obedient. She would adopt the social attitudes of the men around her, including religion. Growing up in a German duchy during the Reformation, she would have been exposed to a ton of different ideas. Her true religious beliefs were unknown, though I'd imagine they were quite nuanced. But she just went along with whatever her guardian did. This interesting background would make religious zealots on every side be weary of her. But she got on famously with her step-children, including "Bloody" Mary. Given the latter's insane religious purges she carried out as Queen, this is really saying something about Anne.

Anne's family was also insanely fertile. Her grandfather, John II of Cleves, was literally called "the Babymaker" because he fathered around 63 illegitimate children by age 30. Anne was generally healthy and grew up on the continent, meaning she likely had much better nutrition growing up than English women. This is obviously important for pregnancy. She was also only 25 at the time of her marriage, which gave her at least ten years of fertility. If Henry had just stuck it out, he most likely would have had another son by her.

So why did Henry dump her? Simple- his ego. Before their first official meeting, he decided to surprise her. There was this old obscure legend of a man who disguised himself in a shoddy clothes and approached his lover. The woman allegedly saw right through the disguise and immediately embraced her lover. Henry wanted to act this out with Anne. The only problem was, this was an old English tale and Anne was German. So when a strange man entered her chamber and started kissing her, she rebuffed him. The humiliated the king retreated and returned in his proper clothes. There Anne greeted him warmly, but Henry never got over this slight. Historians generally believe this incident to be the true demise of their marriage. As for her being ugly, not a chance. She was regularly invited to court after her annulment. A kingdom's court was an exhibition of the land's best people. The most talented, skilled, and beautiful. No way would an ugly woman be allowed in. Reading the Past has a great video on her for those who are interested.

The more I think about it, Anna truly is a modern day Anne of Cleves. She was sold off to a much more powerful man by her guardian. The purpose of this marriage was to procure important social and financial ties for her family as well as produce heirs for her husband.  This marriage fell apart and she was blamed for it when she did absolutely nothing wrong. Now her current lifestyle is dependent on the generosity of her spouse and his family. Huh, I guess this wasn't really that off topic after all.

^ This makes a lot of sense.

I just keep thinking about how JB built and lived in his own kingdom for so long, surrounding himself with an obedient available wife and kids he raised to have the beliefs he told them to have; then acquiring a certain amount of fame and financial windfall with the tv show and how all that increased his delusions of grandeur. He manipulated those around him who were weaker than he was and dependent on him and it gave him a false sense of power. He must have thought that power could translate into taking on the legal system. Do you think he ever goes into their tiny prayer closet at home and actually asks God for guidance? Would he ever be mad at or question God for how things have evolved? Would he ever lie prostrate before God and humble himself? They’re rhetorical questions.

Here in England the orders for sex offenders (Sexual Harm Prevention Orders to give their full title) can include registering devices with the police and having monitoring software installed. Possession of unregistered devices or trying to subvert he monitoring is a breach of the order and a separate criminal offence. I’m sure by the time Josh is released the monitoring will be even more sophisticated.

The David Waller situation intrigues me. He was there throughout the trial, standing by Anna and conferring with the defence team. At the sentence - no sign. Maybe Anna didn’t want him there. Maybe Priscilla wanted him home. Other possibilities- he voiced doubts about Josh’s innocence. Or perhaps being the smug self righteous idiot he is, he realised supporting a Josh was not a good look for him personally and might cast a shadow over the golden image he is trying to promote.

Waller was there at the sentencing.  He walked out with JB, but scrambled ahead of him as the reporters converged on Boob.

Thanks, I didn’t see that. I can see why he wouldn’t want to be caught on camera with JB.

I thought it was JB who said that in the tv interview?? Anyone here watch it recently? Either way, it was a disgusting statement.

I’m honestly hoping she just stayed home in Texas. I think Michelle should be the one dealing with babysitting. She made this mess a long time ago with JB.

Re whoever said that sibling sexual assault was common in their community: Remember when Ken Alexander said the same and claimed it wasn’t that big a deal and that people should just get over it and move on?

I think where they were trying to go with that was to portray it kind of like kids playing Dr. - without reasoning through that 1- He was young, but not THAT young, by a good many years 2- They can’t try to make it sound like that AND also try to minimize and play up that the girls were sleeping and didn’t even know it happened. 3- I think they were also trying to get people to focus on just the two older daughters, and completely ignore the 10 year! gap between him and the youngest victim.

Do you think this is their way of supporting Anna or did David get swept up by the Duggar misinformation campaign and trauma bonding?
